My Wife and I Became Sages in Another World -
Chapter 279: Melina’s Fury
Chapter 279: Melina’s Fury
After slamming both Lady Zhao and her personal guard inside one of the prison cells, I began my interrogation.
"Who placed the enchantment on this dungeon?" I asked.
"Tch..." Zhao scoffed, making me increase the gravity around them and putting more pressure on their bodies.
"I-it was the emperor’s aid. A mage..." the guard spoke up, struggling to get his words out due to the heavy weight of his own body.
"Shut up, you idiot!" Zhao scolded her guard.
"You should listen to him. Even now, he is still trying to protect you by answering my questions..." I said to the noble lady.
"You said your name was Liu, right? Tell me, why do you work for this trash human being?" I asked the man.
Liu clenched his teeth, seemingly angry that I called his employer a "trash human," and said that his family had served the Zhao ever since they rose to nobility.
"That’s nice, man. So, do you agree with what’s happening here?" I kept asking.
"I... I was born to follow the orders of the Zhao family and the emperor. It does not matter what I think. Besides, ever since I met the Lady, I swore to myself I would protect her no matter what..." he said.
*sigh* "How sad. You were blinded and brainwashed by your own love..." I replied, making the man widen his eyes.
"Let me guess. Lady Zhao wasn’t like this until the emperor passed the new enslavement law. Correct?" I asked.
Liu didn’t respond to my question, but his look at the ground told me everything I needed to know.
It was unfortunate, but I couldn’t feel any demonic energy coming from Lady Zhao, so the theory of her being controlled or possessed by a devil was refuted.
I say it was unfortunate because it meant that the change in personality came naturally for the woman, and it wasn’t some sort of devil influencing her feelings.
"The moment you got a taste of power, you decided to abuse it. How many people have you killed?" I said to the woman, staring her down with eyes full of rage.
"Hah! Do you think I was counting them? How many ants have you killed!? Exactly, you don’t know because they are just ants to you!" Zhao replied with a wicked smirk.
"Hmm, so commoners are like ants to you?" I asked, knowing what she would answer.
"That’s right. They are just ants walking around the land of nobles. They should be happy to serve someone like me, a real noble!" she shouted.
"You? A real noble? Pffft, AHAHAH!" I laughed while mockingly pointing at her.
"Wow, you are dumb as hell. Tell me something, Lady Zhao, what have you done to earn the title of noble?" I continued, smiling at her sarcastically.
"What do you mean!? I am a noble already. Why would I need to earn it!?" she asked angrily.
"You were simply born into a noble family. A family that, mind you, were all commoners until the malevolent merchant actually earned his noble title..." I explained, keeping a sarcastic tone.
"You haven’t done anything befitting of a noble. You are simply living this life thanks to the efforts of your ancestor, which you are now running to the ground..." I continued.
"When I looked at that portrait and the story behind it, it didn’t sit well with me that he was called ’malevolent’ when he clearly did everything he could for his family.
You, on the other hand, should be the one known as the malevolent trader.
It’s the perfect title for a piece of trash like you that trades people’s lives!" I said, finishing my sentence with more sarcasm to top it off.
"Shut up! You don’t know anything! You are just a commoner, an outsider putting his nose where it doesn’t belong!" Lady Zhao yelled with frustration.
*slap* Lady Zhao’s face was turned to the side, leaving her shocked at the fact she had been struck.
It wasn’t me who hit her, though. It was Melina, who had just returned from freeing all of the slaves inside the dungeon.
"Y-you... Did you just hit my face- ow!" Zhao’s words were cut off as her head turned to the other side.
"I did hit your face, you bitch. I’m holding myself back not to slam your head against the ground..." Melina muttered her words laced with absolute rage that I had never heard before.
’What did she see in those other cells that put her on edge like this?’ I wondered.
I was honestly a bit afraid as it was my very first time seeing Melina so angry, and this was counting both our past lives.
"Those kids... Why would you do something like that!? You animal!" Melina shouted, punching Zhao in the face and knocking a tooth out.
’Oh no...’ I thought.
"You dare to-..." Lady Zhao tried acting smugly again.
*bam!* another punch to the other cheek, drawing more blood from her nose and mouth.
I couldn’t ask Melina what she had seen at that moment, as it really didn’t feel like it was the best time to do so, but she later told me what had happened.
Basically, most of the slaves were beaten for pleasure, but if one of them ever made a mistake, they would get secluded, starved, and beaten every day.
Most of them didn’t survive these ordeals, and the mistakes they made weren’t real, as most of the time, Lady Zhao would make them up to simply torment her slaves.
At some point, she started torturing the children of the enslaved parents as punishment for mistakes they didn’t even commit, so naturally, Melina was fuming.
To be fair, I would have gone absolutely mad if I had seen the same thing, so it was pretty justifiable that she was beating the living sh*t out of Lady Zhao.
After the noblewoman had most of her face disfigured by Melina’s raging fists, she began asking her to stop as a tear came down her face.
Nonetheless, Melina didn’t feel a sliver of pity for her and grabbed her by the hair while getting their faces closer.
"Did you stop when those children asked you to?" she asked, her eyes staring daggers into the noblewoman’s soul, who finally seemed to be breaking down her arrogant facade.
