My Wife and I Became Sages in Another World -
Chapter 280: The Back of the Theater
Chapter 280: The Back of the Theater
After Melina had discharged her rage on the noblewoman for the atrocities she had been committing in her dungeon, Lady Zhao was surprisingly still conscious.
Her nose was broken, she was missing a few teeth, and her face was swollen to the point where she could barely see.
"Should we take them with us?" Melina asked me.
We were thinking of taking them to Yuandu to interrogate them, but it felt somewhat risky since we didn’t know what kind of magic was placed on them.
If the dungeon had an enchantment, then it was possible that something had been cast on Lady Zhao, too.
"Hmm, we could just move them to one of the bedrooms in the mansion and keep them there for the time being..." I said.
Carrying the two, we went back up to the surface and walked to the largest bedroom upstairs.
Liu kept staring at us with anger after the beating Melina gave to Zhao Lan and kept muttering words to himself about how it was his duty to protect her.
"Hey, man. Let’s make a deal..." I said to the guard as I approached him.
"If you tell me everything we need to know, I can heal Lady Zhao and restore her face."
The guard didn’t believe me at first, so I took out my dagger and cut my palm open before pouring a healing potion over it.
He was astounded at the potency of the potion and started considering my offer, but Lady Zhao was looking at him as if signaling him to be quiet.
Nonetheless, the man’s sense of duty got the best of him, and he began answering my questions truthfully.
First, I asked for the name of the supposed mage that enchanted the dungeon, and the guard said that his name was "Sinoc," with no last name.
"A commoner?" I asked.
Liu shook his head. "Not exactly—an outsider," he replied.
My suspicions were that this could be the devil we had been hunting, but the enchantment in the dungeon had a mix of MP and demonic energy, which wasn’t something that devils could do.
Nessa was the one who taught me this, but devils were unable to control the same MP that we used.
All of their powers relied on their demonic energy, which was, to put it simply, their version of MP.
The fact that someone had used an enchantment using both was completely new to me, and I didn’t like that.
Liu said it was a mage, and to confirm it, I sent a voice message to Sage Astra at the Mage’s Tower to see if they knew anything else about him.
While we waited for the sage to answer back, I kept asking the guard more questions relating to the enslaved commoners that Zhao Lan was trying to buy that same day.
Since the Zhaos were one of the most prominent slave traders in Guanghua, all those fourteen people that we saved before entering the city were going to be auctioned. However, she wasn’t the only one contributing to the event.
There were two more families that were bringing dozens of slaves to sell the following night. My plan at first was to buy them as if I were a noble and then take them to Yuandu, but I was starting to think that it might not be the best idea.
I could easily get outbid by a wealthy noble, and I wasn’t trying to make Melina use her funds to buy people.
"Hmm, I have another plan. Let’s leave this place first..." I said.
"W-wait... Are you keeping us here?" the guard asked us.
"Yep. Don’t worry, though. You will only be here until tomorrow night, or I guess it will be the morning after..." I replied.
The beaten-up Zhao Lan spoke up, her words sounding somewhat muffled by her swollen cheeks.
"You can’t. I must attend the auction!" she exclaimed.
"Are you still on that? Don’t you understand what’s happening here or what?" I said as I approached the noblewoman.
"There won’t be an auction tomorrow, so sit here quietly..." I muttered with a severe tone.
I asked Yoru to get out of my shadow and guard our two prisoners for the time being, just so they wouldn’t try anything funny.
My companion’s appearance made them recoil in fear a bit, which was expected after seeing a large wolf come out of the shadows inside your home.
"He won’t hurt you unless you try to do something weird. So, just behave, alright?" I said.
Zhao Lan and her guard nodded in understanding, allowing Melina and I to finally leave the mansion.
Our next stop was the theater, where they would be holding the slave auction the next day.
The guard told us that most of the slaves that were being sold were already at the venue, as they were kept in a backroom inside their cells.
Xiulan was a pretty big city, so Melina and I had to fly to get there quickly, and when we arrived, we spotted a group of people wearing armor leaving from the back of the place.
They seemed to be escorting a man wearing nice regal robes who got into a carriage with a crest featuring what seemed like a snake holding a shield, which was the symbol of whatever his family was.
"Maybe they were leaving their merchandise..." I muttered, thinking out loud.
We decided to ignore them for now and get inside the theater from the back door that the last group used.
Three guards were standing right outside of it, so we quickly descended from the sky and knocked them out before they realized what was happening.
Of course, we took their unconscious bodies to Yuandu, or they would get executed the next day for failing to do their jobs.
Opening the double doors at the back was as easy as pie, as I just used gravity magic to move the locks.
Our "search" spell was picking up a lot of people inside, and two of them were moving around the place, so we concluded that there were a few more guards inside.
"Ready?" I asked my fiancee, who had her eyes focused on our target and nodded with confidence.
