Chapter 278: A Noble’s Dungeon

Chapter 278: A Noble’s Dungeon

As soon as Melina and I started going down the stairs, we both felt a surge of magic coming from the ceiling.

I could easily lift my hand and touch the ceiling since it wasn’t a very expansive underground hallway, and when I did, it felt strange.

"It’s like a combination of MP and demonic energy..." I muttered.

Inspecting it closer, I deduced it was an enchantment that had been placed inside the secret room, and it was hiding the presence of whatever was inside.

"Mel, let’s be careful..." I said, trying to dispel the enchantment from the underground hallway.

However, the fact that it was combined with demonic energy didn’t allow me to do so, so we had no other choice but to ignore it and keep walking.

When the room opened up, we found ourselves in a dark prison with cells on both sides of the hallway.

The first few cells were empty, but we could still see blood splatters inside, making us clench our fists a bit nervously as we scanned our surroundings.

Our "search" spell wasn’t working since the enchantment was blocking it. Luckily, the dungeon only had two hallways that crossed each other, so it wouldn’t be hard to look around the entire place.

At one point, we reached a cell where an old man was loudly coughing while sitting in the corner, and when he saw the two of us walking by, he hugged his knees and hid his face with fear.

The man wasn’t that old, but his miserable appearance added a few years to his looks. His hair seemed half-white as if it was decoloring from stress, and he had bruises and cuts all over his body.

"Sir, it’s okay. We are not here to hurt you..." said Melina with a sweet tone of voice.

The man peeked with one eye, but his body kept trembling without being able to say a word.

"Sir, would you like to leave this place?" Melina asked again.

Still, the man’s curiosity couldn’t beat his fear as he unconsciously curled up into a ball in the corner.

’This man has been broken...’ I thought, feeling pity for him.

With confidence, Melina grabbed the cell’s bars and fused earth magic into her hands, allowing her to bend them open and walk inside the cell.

The man kept recoiling in fear, especially after seeing Melina’s demonstration. Nonetheless, she walked up to the man and patted him on the head gently, making him stop his silent panic.

Without exchanging any words with him, she teleported him to Yuandu and quickly returned.

Melina told me that she didn’t have time to see his reaction, but Nisa and Tony were there to receive him, so he was going to be in good hands.

After freeing the first slave, we kept walking along the dark corridors of the dungeon until a sound could be heard at the very end.

’Is that... the crack of a whip!?’ I pondered, raising our speed and running towards the sound.

"Were you happy!? Huh!?" a woman shouted.

*whapish* the sound of the whip echoed in the hallways.

"You were relieved, weren’t you!? You were happy that I lost all those precious new slaves!" *whapish*

I clenched my teeth as we kept running, knowing that we were not going to find a pretty sight.

When we got to the crossing of the two halls, we looked to the side and saw Lady Zhao standing behind a woman kneeling on the ground.

Zhao had a whip in her hands, and the woman was crying while holding her arms apprehensively as her back was wholly uncovered and riddled with cuts.

As the woman raised her whip one more time, I appeared next to her and grabbed her wrists, stopping her motion.

"What!? Who the hell are you!?" Lady Zhao shouted in my face, so I strengthened my grip around her wrists until she dropped the whip.

Melina quickly grabbed the woman and started applying a healing potion on her back, seemingly not even paying attention to Lady Zhao, who was staring at us with rage and disdain.

"Wh-who are you...?" the hurt woman asked Melina, but she simply patted her on the head and teleported her to Yuandu.

"Huh!? Where did they go!? You can’t take my slaves!" Lady Zhao shouted as if she was throwing a tantrum.

Not even five seconds later, Melina appeared back in the dungeon and drank an MP potion to keep her high energy.

I could hear steps approaching behind me at a fast pace, but Melina raised her hand and pointed her finger, shooting a fire laser into the distance of the dark corridor.

"Ahrgh!" we heard the groans of a man not too far from us.

"Liu!" Lady Zhao shouted.

"Who’s that?" I asked with a serious tone.

"It’s my personal guard... You guys are done for anyway. You won’t escape your execution!" she replied.

Melina walked to the area where we heard the screams of the man and returned dragging the supposed personal guard., who lost an arm due to Melina’s fire laser.

The only reason he didn’t bleed out to death was because the same fire from her attack had cauterized the wound.

The fact that Melina was utterly unapologetic about it was enough to tell me how angry she truly felt.

"Alright, I’ll start interrogating them. You can start getting all the other enslaved commoners out of here..." I said.

"Got it, I’ll be back..." Melina replied, quickly running to the other cells that were filled with people.

"N-no, you can’t!" Zhao shouted, raising her free arm to slap me.

Nevertheless, I used gravity magic to slightly increase the weight of her body, making her incapable of moving a muscle.

Then, using the same type of magic, I forced Lady Zhao and the guard Liu into a cell, slamming their back against the wall.

"Alright, I got a lot of questions, and you two better answer, or else..." I said, casting earth magic to make the ground shake for a moment to scare them.

The guard was trembling, but it was primarily due to the pain he was feeling in his missing right arm.

Lady Zhao, however, didn’t look as afraid as her own guard, which was a little suspicious to me as this would’ve worked with anyone else.
