My Wife and I Became Sages in Another World -
Chapter 274: The City of Xiulan
Chapter 274: The City of Xiulan
After Mei Ling told us the story of how she found herself in this situation, Melina and I were about to blow up in anger.
However, we quickly composed ourselves when she gathered the courage to ask us who we were.
Melina and I looked at each other as if we were both wondering if we should tell her the truth or not.
Honestly, my gut feeling was telling me that Ling was a good person who had fallen victim to the whole system the emperor had created, and I was sure that Melina thought the same.
At this point in time, I had met nobles from almost every single country, and I could tell that Ling was one of the most humble ones.
"We’ll tell you later. For now, just call us Blue and Red..." said Melina, referring to her as Blue and me as Red.
’Good idea. People might recognize our names now that our engagement has been announced to the world...’ I thought.
Even if the Guanghua Kingdom wasn’t allied with any of the other countries in their current state, it wasn’t far-fetched to think that they still kept up with their political affairs.
"All you have to know is that we are taking care of the devil that destroyed this country," Melina continued.
"The devil?" Ling asked, her expression turning to terror.
However, we didn’t have time to elaborate any further as we noticed that the cart in front of us had made it to the gates.
It was supposed to be full of enslaved commoners, but after we teleported them to the settlement, it was wholly empty.
The driver presented his identification to the guards and said that he was bringing a delivery for the "Zhao" family, proudly stating that he had been on the road for two weeks and wanted to get some rest.
Unfortunately for him, when the guards opened the back of the cart to check the inside, they instantly grabbed the driver and pinned him down.
"Liar, were you trying to infiltrate the city!? Are you a spy!?" the guards exclaimed as the confused man was thrown on the ground and chained up by the wrists.
"Wh-what!? There were fourteen slaves in there, I’m telling you!" the driver yelled, but it was to no avail.
After the guards took the man away and moved the cart out of the entrance, it was our turn.
The driver gave his identification while another guard approached the carriage’s door.
"Ah, Lady Mei. You look as beautiful as always," said the guard, who clearly had a crush on the noble.
"Heh, thanks. I don’t mean to take much of your time. I got some business today..." Ling replied with a fake smile.
"Right, right. I’ll get it done quickly for you, ma’am." said the guard, shooting a glance at Melina and me.
"Those two are my slaves. Hopefully, a big family will want them if they see how elegant they look. Don’t you think?" said Ling, covering for us.
’Wow, she is a really good actress. She even came up with an excuse for our outfits.’ I thought.
"I see. Someone will certainly buy them for a large sum if they look like that..." the guard replied.
Thankfully, the guard’s crush on Ling was bigger than his suspicions about us, and without questioning her any further, they gave her identification back and let us inside the city of Xiulan.
It was supposed to be one of the biggest trading cities in the country, and while it was still bustling with merchants selling different kinds of stuff, there were also tons of slaves being auctioned in the middle of the streets.
Watching everything from inside the carriage made my stomach revolt a little with disgust. Simply seeing some of the auctioneers proudly smiling while selling a young man or woman made me boil with rage.
Melina was the same. Seriously, we had to hold ourselves back from not leaving the carriage and causing a huge commotion, and we hadn’t even been inside the city for over ten minutes.
Ling noticed our displeasure and looked down with apprehension.
"Sorry you had to see this..." she said.
"I know you are probably not from here, so it just makes me a little sad that the first outsiders I met had to see this side of our country..." Ling continued.
"Well, it’s not like it’s your fault. As we said, it was the devil who caused all of this..." Melina replied.
"Y-you said that before. But are devils even real?" Ling asked.
"Oh, they are very real..." I said, still looking out the window with displeasure.
Not probing any further into the matter, Ling stayed silent. Still, we asked her why she had come to Xiulan.
It turned out that her father sent her there to buy slaves from a big auction that would take place the following night.
However, she quickly clarified that the slaves that were sent to her family’s territory were given housing and "freedom," which was a completely different treatment than they got from other nobles.
To keep the commoner’s families safe, Ling’s father was buying as many slaves as possible and giving them a somewhat peaceful life in their territory.
They couldn’t leave the area, but at least they weren’t treated like less than humans.
Besides the Mei family, Ling told us that there were a few other noble families that disagreed with the commoner enslavement law. However, they couldn’t voice out their disapproval in public for fear of getting executed.
’This is good. If there is some resistance from some of the nobles, then our job won’t be as hard as it seemed...’ I thought.
The fact that Ling’s father was keeping enslaved commoners safe in secret in their territory was reassuring, but I was also a bit worried for them.
Ling said that it was her mother’s wish, and so they decided to risk their lives so her sacrifice wouldn’t be in vain and help as many slaves as possible.
’Ling’s mother was being kept in a dungeon under the palace... I’ll make sure to get her out safely.’ I thought.
