My Wife and I Became Sages in Another World -
Chapter 273: The Noble, Mei Ling
Chapter 273: The Noble, Mei Ling
After Melina and I teleported all of the enslaved villagers inside the cart without anyone else seeing us, we set our eyes on the noble carriage behind us.
Only one woman was sitting inside the carriage that was being driven by a servant wearing fancy clothes.
Since we drank the entire invisibility potion, we knew that it would last for at least thirty minutes before the effect ran out.
We thought about sitting at the top of the noble lady’s carriage until we were inside the city, but the guards at the gates were taking their sweet time in letting people in, so the effects of the potion would run out before we got inside.
"What if we get inside the carriage?" Melina asked.
"Huh? How will that help us?" I asked.
Even if we were inside the carriage and our invisibility ran out, they would still ask for some sort of identification at the gates.
Melina smiled as she seemingly had a plan and started whispering it to me. We were invisible, but the people around us could still hear us if we spoke loudly.
Her plan was to "kidnap" the noble lady, which sounded crazy at first, but when she elaborated, I realized it could work.
Still invisible, we carefully opened the door to the carriage, making the woman confused as she thought her door must have been broken.
By the time she stood up to close it, Melina and I were already inside the carriage, sitting in front of her.
The woman looked pretty young. I would have guessed she was 20-21 years old.
She wore an elegant red dress and a golden headpiece that accentuated her dark hair that had been tied in a bun.
Before we could continue, the lady started muttering to herself with a sad tone.
*sigh* "I hate this so much... Just let me stay home..." she muttered under her breath.
Melina and I looked at each other with a bit of confusion, not knowing what she meant, but we couldn’t get distracted, so we continued with our plan.
Still invisible, I used magic to mute all of the sounds inside the carriage, making it so people outside couldn’t hear a thing, then nodded at Melina, letting her know that it was safe to speak.
"Listen up, lady..." Melina said, instantly startling the woman.
"Wh-who said that!?" she exclaimed loudly, but no sound could come out of the carriage.
"Silence, listen up!" Melina replied even louder.
The woman was so scared that tears started to appear under her eyes, and while we both felt terrible about it, we couldn’t falter.
"In a few minutes, a man and a woman will appear inside this carriage. You are going to tell the guards that they are your slaves and let them inside the city. Understand?" Melina explained, her voice leaving no room for negotiations.
"Wh-what?" the noble lady asked, utterly clueless about what was happening.
"You don’t need to know any more than that. Do it, and you will be spared..." Melina continued.
Her speech made it sound like we would kill the woman with no hesitation if she didn’t follow our instructions. Of course, we would never do that, but then again, sometimes threatening someone was the only way to get things done.
A few minutes later, once the woman calmed down, Melina spoke up again.
"You will be fine. Just follow the instructions..." she said with a sweet tone of voice that made the woman less tense.
"What’s your name?" Melina asked, keeping her tone.
"M-Mei Ling..."
"And why did you come to Xiulan?"
"M-my father sent me to take care of some business here..."
"What does your father do?" Melina kept asking.
"H-he was a trader of goods. One of the best in Guanghua... But now..." said Mei, stopping herself before finishing the sentence.
With a melancholic tone, Mei Ling explained that after the emperor declared the "commoners enslavement law," her father had been chosen by the man himself to be one of the leading slave traders.
It wasn’t something that she or her father approved of, but they didn’t have any other choice as they were being threatened into becoming slaves themselves.
The reason was that the Mei family used to be commoners dozens of years ago, and they got the noble title thanks to one of their ancestors who became rich after opening his trading business.
’So, she sympathizes with the enslaved commoners since her family used to be the same, but now they are the ones trading them...’
Once I removed the sound barrier around the carriage, it took two minutes for our invisibility potion to wear off, making our bodies slowly appear inside the carriage in front of the woman.
The noble lady widened her eyes with shock at seeing our appearance, as we were clearly not from her country. Nonetheless, we were wearing the same type of clothing that nobles wore.
Luckily, I had saved some of the chains they used on the enslaved commoners we freed, so we placed them around our wrists to make it seem like we were cuffed.
"I know we aren’t dressed like slaves, so try to make it believable, Miss Mei..." I said.
"I-I will... But..." she stammered.
"C-call me Ling. Miss Mei was my mother..."
’Oh, right. I guess they use their family name first in this country...’ I thought.
"Sorry if this is a difficult question, but what happened to your mother?" Melina asked, leaning closer to the woman.
"S-she opposed the emperor’s deal since she didn’t want to trade people’s lives for money..." said Ling.
When she told us the full story, Melina and I were fuming with anger.
The emperor called the Mei family, who used to be commoners, to become one of the main slave traders in the country.
During the meeting, Ling’s mother said she found the deal to be awful and stated that it would destroy the country of Guanghua.
For her audacity, she was sentenced to death. However, after Ling’s father pleaded for her life, she was sent to an underground prison under the palace.
Then, the emperor made him promise that he would take care of his slave trading business, and in return, he wouldn’t kill his wife.
