My Wife and I Became Sages in Another World -
Chapter 275: Forgery
Chapter 275: Forgery
After talking with Ling inside her carriage, we reached her destination, which was an inn that only nobles could reserve.
Commoners had been stripped of all their rights, and since nobody was visiting from other countries due to their closed borders, the inns had to cater only to nobles.
If an innkeeper was found to be feeding or helping commoners, they could get executed.
However, slaves could enter with their masters, and surprisingly, Ling asked us if we wanted to go inside with her.
’We were threatening this girl like thirty minutes ago. Why does she trust us so much?’ I pondered.
Before answering, I pulled out my bracelet relic and stared at the arrow. However, it moved away from Ling and pointed at the opposite side of her.
I glanced at my fiancee, and we both nodded, knowing that Ling wasn’t a devil in disguise, and took on her offer.
When we got out of the carriage, the driver was surprised, thinking that Ling was alone the entire time.
"Who are you-!?" the man exclaimed, but his words were cut off after Ling shushed him.
Inside the inn, the servants bowed as Mei Ling made her way to the counter, with Melina and I following closely behind.
"Lady Mei. It’s good to have you here!" said the receptionist with a fake smile.
"Hah, well, you know I love this city. I can’t get enough of it!" Ling replied, returning the fake sentiment.
The servants around us were staring at us with contempt as if they were vigilant of the conversation between the two women.
"I will be taking my slaves into my room..." Ling continued.
"Of course, that is no problem. Here are the keys to your chambers..."
After the exchange with the receptionist was over, we made our way upstairs to the third floor and entered Ling’s room.
It was definitely a room for a noble, as it was just as fancy as any other room we had seen inside the castles of other countries.
The only difference was that their whole aesthetic had ancient Chinese roots.
Golden dragons engraved on redwood and silk drapes hanging on different walls gave it an air of royalty and serenity.
As soon as the door closed behind us, Ling let out a long and tired sigh.
"I hate this so much..." she said, looking down and walking towards the window.
Melina inquired about her discomfort, and she explained that she hated acting like everything was fine all the time.
From what she told us, the reason why the servants were staring at her when she was speaking to the receptionist was so they could report her if she said something wrong.
Basically, there was a law that stated that enslaved commoners could file a complaint if they heard any noble speaking ill of their country or emperor.
If their reports were true, then the noble would be sentenced to death, and the slave would be given their freedom.
However, some people were being reported for simply looking sad or angry, as the emperor wanted to make it seem like everyone was happy all the time.
’This must be why she is such a good actress. She has been doing it for a long time...’ I thought.
"What a dirty play..." said Melina.
"I agree. This devil is pretty smart..." I replied.
When comparing what the devil in Guanghua was doing to what someone like Zagor did, it was easy to tell that this demon was way smarter.
Zagor enslaved the entirety of Kalusia and hunted down the royal family, so of course, literally everyone hated him and turned on him the second they had the chance.
Not only that, but he was so dumb and full of himself that he never realized that the beastkins he thought were dying were actually being cured and fighting against him.
However, this devil called Vyrazul seemed to take a completely different approach, which was a problem for us.
"Now, Blue, Red. Will you tell me who you are?" Ling asked without looking at us.
"Sorry, we can’t do that yet," Melina replied.
"I understand. I’m technically a slave trader anyways..."
We did feel bad for her, but telling her who we were could put her in danger. In fact, she was already in trouble by simply being with us there.
"Ling. Is there a part of this city that deals with... Ummm... fake documentation?" I asked.
I had a plan in mind, but I wasn’t sure if it would work.
"I don’t think so. Anyone caught doing something like that would get executed on the spot..." Ling said.
"I see. Then let me take a look at your tablet," I continued.
Ling looked a bit confused but cooperated with me and gave me her identification slab.
It was a simple piece of wood that had the name "Mei" and the emperor’s signature, so it wasn’t anything crazy.
Apparently, the guards would check if the wood was the real deal, as the slabs were made with redwood.
Now, here is the thing. Redwood was the same type of tree where I built my tree house in End Forest. However, even though it was the largest tree I had ever seen, it was also the only redwood in the forest.
In the Guanghua Kingdom, redwood trees were abundant, but none of them were even close to reaching the height of the one in End Forest.
Feeling extremely lucky, I opened my void pocket and pulled out a few pieces of redwood that I had been keeping for literal years, ever since I built the tree house, and used those to recreate their identification cards.
’This must be the easiest forgery someone could do...’ I thought.
Once they were done, we wrote the name "Shen" for our family name, and then I just copied the emperor’s signature, which was super easy.
Melina would now be "Shen Wei," and I would be "Shen Li."
Ling looked a bit worried and asked us what we were planning on doing with the fake identification cards.
"We are going to the auction tomorrow night, of course," I replied confidently.
"Wh-whaaaaaaat!?"
