Chapter 240: Mask-on

["I see lots of people here. None of them look like bandits..."] said Yoru inside my head.

After traveling for a little while in the Guanghua Kingdom, we spotted a large convoy traveling with soldiers, and I sent Yoru to tell me who was inside.

It could have been a pack of criminals that got captured and were being taken to jail. However, it turned out to be the opposite.

Everyone inside the carriages was enslaved commoner families who were most likely being sent somewhere to get sold.

Yoru also mentioned that he saw a few children inside the carriages, so we just felt like we couldn’t ignore it.

’We have this much power... We might as well use it.’ I thought.

Giving the order to my companions and the rest of the group, we prepared to intercept the convoy when Melina spoke up.

Opening her void pocket, she brought out seven wooden masks, one for each person in our group—even Yoru.

"If we are going to keep a low profile, these might help us a bit..." she said, passing them around.

The masks were nothing crazy, as they were just smooth wooden surfaces with two holes for our eyes. Still, that design somehow made it scarier.

Once our masks were secured, we crashed down on the soldiers’ convoy and started knocking them out.

If we didn’t have the masks, then we would have had to come up with another strategy, as we couldn’t have people remembering our faces in the nation we sneaked into.

After taking down the twenty soldiers escorting the carriages, we opened them up and freed the people from inside.

Apparently, they were all from a small settlement like the one we spent the previous night.

They had been living there for a few years in secret, but somehow, their location was leaked to the authorities, and a group of soldiers was sent to capture everyone.

Our main problem was that we were in the middle of nowhere, so it didn’t feel right to simply tell the people to take the carriages and get refuge.

’If they get captured after we saved them, it’s not only going to be a waste of our time, but it’s also going to be much worse for them...’ I thought.

We had the option of sending a part of our team to escort the villagers to a new settlement, but I didn’t want to split up from my group while inside a nation controlled by a devil.

At that point, we sent a message to Yuki in Kyotora using a voice crystal that we had left with her in case of emergencies.

We told her about the situation with the enslaved villagers and how we didn’t have the option to move them anywhere. However, we did have the chance to teleport them to Kyotora using the magic quartz.

The teleporting crystal we had in Kyotora was connected to the one we left at Sephyr. Nevertheless, before we made our way to Guanghua, Sage Lang had given us tons of the quartz.

For safety measures, I attuned another crystal and left it at the same spot in Kyotora, but this one wasn’t connected to the one in Sephyr, but to one I had inside my void pocket.

In the message, we told Yuki to ask Sage Lang for help getting to the small hut where we placed the crystals, as it wasn’t easy to access without flying.

A few minutes later, we received a reply saying that she was on her way with Lang to the hut and that we could send the refugees at any time.

Feeling glad that Yuki had our backs, I pulled out the magic quartz from my void pocket and used it to bring the freed villagers to Kyotora.

It wasn’t the best solution, but it was better than having them wander around Guanghua alone. Still, I told them that they could always return once their country returned to normal.

After we teleported all the refugees and received confirmation from Yuki that she was with them, we tied up all of the knocked-out soldiers and left the area.

The higher-ups would certainly be informed of that event once the soldiers woke up and reached a city. Luckily, we would be long gone by then.

It took us a few more hours of flying at high speeds until we reached another settlement that looked much bigger than the previous one.

The settlement was hidden behind a small hill, which prevented it from being seen from the main road. Thus, if people were traveling along the streets, they wouldn’t be able to spot it.

The main reason why we saw it in the first place was because we were flying high up in the air. Otherwise, we would have probably missed it.

We descended close to the entrance, which had a small sign that read "Yuandu," and two villagers acting as guards stood stall with spears in their hands.

They seemed nervous as soon as they saw us, pointing their weapons toward us with shaky hands while asking us for our business in their settlement.

However, before we could reply, they were interrupted by Nisa and Tony.

"Oh, guys, no worries. This is our boss!" Nisa said to the shaky guards, who looked shocked at her words.

Nisa and Tony were the two members of DD that I first met, and they were the ones who advised us on what route to take to avoid all the big cities of Guanghua.

The other half of DD was there, and they had been helping the refugees at Yuandu with their daily lives.

That night, we spent it at the settlement and used it to catch up with Nisa and Tony’s investigation of the devil.

Although they had yet to see it in person, they implied that the empress was the devil.

I remembered that Jackson told me one devil had "slept with a king" to gain control, but it was one of those things that I had to see to believe. Still, their report matched the description that Jackson gave me.

We wanted to gather as much information on the devil at Guanghua as possible. Even though we wouldn’t be hunting them anytime soon, we thought it would give us an advantage later on.
