Chapter 217: Mysterious Pink-Haired Girl (Part 1)
After more than twenty combat matches ended, the tournament went to an intermission of a few minutes, giving me time to get to my post as it would be my turn to be the judge.
I saw that the other referee was holding a staff in his hands at all times, so I took my bo in order to copy the veteran.
The reason they had their weapons out while judging the match was so that they could stop the fight quickly in case it got out of hand, and while I didn’t really need my bo with me, I took it out for the sake of it.
The first few rounds were relatively easy, with the combatants either getting pushed out of bounds or surrendering after spending most of their MP.
Don’t get me wrong, I was glad that I didn’t have to do anything rash as the referee, but I definitely expected some fights to get more heated later on in the finals.
Yuki had her first battle while I was there, with her opponent being a graduate student from Kyotora.
When she stepped into the arena, I looked up at the royal stand, where the king and queen were watching the match, and saw their looks of disdain for their daughter.
The concubines and other step-siblings weren’t allowed in the same area as the king, so they were watching the fights from inside the castle, where they were also being transmitted, thanks to Headmaster Lang.
"Begin!" I shouted, making Yuki’s opponent instantly rush at her with his sword raised.
However, the man’s movements were suddenly halted as his own shadow popped out of the ground and ensnared his arms and legs, binding him in place.
With focus in her eyes, Yuki used wind magic to propel herself across the arena, reaching the man who couldn’t get away from the grip of his own shadow and punching him in the face with a wind-charged fist.
As Yuki’s opponent flew out of bounds, the spectators stayed silent for a few seconds before letting out a loud roar for the black-haired princess.
I looked back at the king and queen, and while their eyes were widened by Yuki’s potential, the hate they had for her in their eyes didn’t go away.
’Man, what the hell is wrong with these people...?’ I pondered.
Using sound magic to hear the spectators around me, I heard how everyone had been placing their bets on any student from Sephyr, as they had been demonstrating to be on another level during the tournament.
I smiled proudly. Seeing that people were recognizing the potential of my students made me feel quite happy, but I wasn’t going to be satisfied unless they won the whole thing.
A few matches later, Keiko’s turn came up, facing against another girl from the Vista academy.
Apart from the booth that the Kyotora King used, there was also a "VIP" section for other royal families or nobles who attended the event where Keiko’s family was sitting.
Seeing that Keiko had noticed her family made me a bit worried for her since I didn’t want her to be distracted. However, she proved me wrong when she finished her match in less than two minutes.
After being the referee for dozens of rounds, my shift ended, so I moved to the stands where Melina and my companions sat, watching the event.
Headmaster Lang had offered us seats at the "VIP" booth, but Melina declined, saying that she didn’t want to bother with other nobles and customs at that time.
However, as I was walking along the tunnels of the arena to reach the guests’ section, I felt my relic bracelet acting up again.
The obsidian arrow began floating and slightly pulling my arm to the opposite side I was walking, making me a tad bit annoyed.
*sigh* "Fine, I’ll follow..." I muttered to myself, turning around and following the direction that the small black arrow pointed at.
A minute later, the arrow pointed at one of the rooms where participants waited for their matches to start.
Among the crowd of combatants, the arrow slowly turned and pointed straight at a woman sitting at the back of the room with vibrant pink hair and purple eyes, which was a very strange sight, even in this world.
She was wearing cheap leather armor and had no weapons on her, but that wasn’t the suspicious thing about her.
When I tried to sense her MP, I could feel almost nothing, as if the woman wasn’t able to cast magic. Still, it felt somewhat familiar.
The arrow on my bracelet kept floating and pointing straight at the woman, so I slid it up my arm to hide it under my clothing and approached the woman.
She looked like she was around my age, but she could have also been a bit younger.
I didn’t recognize her from any of the other academy groups, which made me believe she was a random participant.
Before approaching her, I used my secret "inspect" spell that showed me incomplete information without anyone noticing.
<Name: Nessa
Age: 18
Skills: Martial Arts
MP: 2,000
Titles: Destroyer. >
’Hmmm, two thousand MP is really low...’ I thought as I saw her general information.
’Title of Destroyer? What could that mean?’ I kept pondering, but my "hidden inspect" didn’t allow me to see the details.
At that moment, the woman spotted me staring at her and approached me with a worried expression.
"Can I help you? Is it my turn!?" she asked, sounding preoccupied.
"Umm. No, no. You are going to hear your name get called out before that happens..." I replied, still feeling suspicious about the woman.
"Ah, I see. Then, did I do something wrong!?" she asked again.
Since I was one of the referees, the woman believed that I had some sort of business with her, so she was acting pretty shy around me.
Realistically, there was no reason for a judge to talk directly to any of the combatants, so the fact I was even inside their waiting room had all the fighters inside on edge.
*ahem* "Nervermind..." I said to the pink-haired woman before leaving the room.
’I’ll keep an eye on her...’
