Chapter 127: The Corrupt Doctor

Chapter 127: The Corrupt Doctor

After I shot a glance at Harun that portrayed danger, he nodded at me as if giving me permission, so I grabbed Gina’s arm and teleported to Vespera’s spot on the rooftop.

Yoru had weaved through the shadows and went inside the mansion to see what was happening, and when I asked him what he was seeing, he used his familiar connection to show me his point of view.

Caleb’s mansion was huge. Since large buildings like that couldn’t have more than one floor due to the terrain they were built on, its immensity was all on ground level.

There were no underground tunnels or secret dungeons, and there were no upstairs halls and rooms. Instead, it was as if ten or fifteen small houses were placed inside a gated community that all belonged to Caleb.

In a way, that made our job easier since Yoru only had to run through the shadows of the gardens and different rooms until he reached the one where we felt the group of people were gathered.

From Yoru’s eyes, I could see a large group of people with chains around their wrists and ankles that were all connected, making them walk in a straight line behind each other.

Men with white robes were leading them outside the room, and Yoru kept following them from the shadows.

At one point, a man wearing a doctor’s robe made of silk appeared next to the prisoners and began asking them to open their mouths and say "ahh" as the man inspected their mouths.

’Is he making sure they are healthy just so he can sell them?’ I pondered, and my suspicions were confirmed right after he was done.

"They are looking good. Make sure you don’t get noticed and use the north port..." said the doctor who I supposed was Caleb.

I was still watching everything unfold from Yoru’s perspective, but we had the proof that we needed.

Now that we knew for a fact that the people in there were kidnapped prisoners, there was nothing else to do other than raid the entire mansion.

[Yoru. When you hear the explosion at the gate, you can take the bandits out on your side...] I said to my companion telepathically.

[Understood.] he replied.

After I gazed at Vespera and Gina, I gave them a nod, and we jumped down from the roof, landing right in front of the mansion’s gate.

Two guards were standing outside, although they weren’t wearing any white robes, which was probably a good idea, or it would have been extremely obvious that this was their hideout. Not that it mattered since we had discovered it already.

Vespera and Gina took out both guards with a swift attack that left them unconscious, and I used fire magic to blow up the gate and create a massive diversion for the bandits inside.

As we passed through the broken gates, dozens of hooded figures started attacking us, but a simple wind spell was able to blow them away into the walls and structures, leaving them unconscious.

"Keep your eyes peeled for anyone using a black pearl..." I warned Gina and Vespera as we kept making our way through the mansion’s gardens.

After taking down over thirty bandits and securing them with Vespera’s spiderwebs, we reached the area where the prisoners were being kept.

When we arrived, we found Yoru wagging his tail, proudly sitting on top of a mountain of fainted bandits, and Caleb beaten down against a wall while the prisoners just looked at the wolf in awe.

"Amazing job as always, Yoru," I said as I gave my wolf a few pats as a reward.

Yoru told me that the doctor had brought out a black pearl, but he was able to take him down before the man could eat it.

The pearl had been thrown to the opposite side of the room, so I picked it up and decided to keep it to study it.

If we could find out how the black pearls worked, we could potentially find a cure for the lesser demons that used to be people.

"Who the hell are you people...?" said Caleb as he struggled with the pain he felt from Yoru’s kick.

"There is no need for you to know that. But we have questions for you..." I said to the man as I approached him.

"Who gave you this black pearl?" I continued, showing the little black sphere in my hand.

Caleb bit his lips and turned to the side, avoiding the question, so I used gravity magic to put some pressure on him.

One thing I realized during my travels was that people were very scared of gravity magic since they didn’t understand the full nature of it.

For a person from this world, it felt as if they were feeling a sudden weight that was so heavy that it felt like their bodies would burst, so of course, it made for an excellent tool to make criminals talk.

If I were to punch the answers out of them, I was sure it would have been much more painful than the weight I put on them with gravity magic, considering I never overdid it to the point where their bones would break.

Nonetheless, that sudden feeling of heaviness around their bodies always startled them enough to talk.

"A man with red hair... golden eyes..." said Caleb as he struggled with gravity.

’The phoenix guy again...’ I thought.

It was evident that Zagor wanted to cause chaos and commotion within the nations that he was currently at war with, but I still needed to confirm it just in case there was someone else trying to pull strings.

I asked him more questions to see how much of their plans matched with the Crimson Scorpions from the Droman Empire, and he confirmed that they were sending the victims to the Northern Empire.

When I asked if he was also sending them to the Guanghua Kingdom, which was the other nation that was trying to buy slaves from Romanov, he denied it, saying that trading with Guanghua wasn’t feasible for the people at Aridonia, as it was too far for them to reach.

Even if they wanted to sell something to the Guanghua Kingdom, their ships would have to make a few stops along the way, and that wasn’t something that they could do since they were transporting enslaved people.

’Well, that just means that the Northern Empire could have sent slaves to Guanghua after...’ I thought.
