Chapter 126: A Faulty Detective
After the Sultan confirmed that I was the person who brewed the potion that saved his daughter, the man proved to be friendlier than I expected.
The women who were scared to death before were now bringing me tea after Harun invited me to sit and told them to treat me like a royal guest.
"I won’t say no to some tea, but we should really speak in private for a bit..." I said.
The sultan placed his hand on his chin as he delved into his thoughts and told the women to leave the room after bringing the tea.
Honestly, I expected a bit of resistance after I asked him that. He was the sultan, after all, and I had just barged into his bedroom, so leaving him alone with a stranger wasn’t something that I thought the servants would agree to so quickly.
Before I could speak, Harun must have noticed my confusion and explained that he had no reason to fear the person who saved his daughter.
I mean, my potions did save his daughter, but it’s not like I brewed them specifically for her. I was just lucky that one of his soldiers went to the Sephyr Kingdom to buy them.
Nonetheless, I wasn’t going to complain about things coincidentally working out for me, so I relished the opportunity and told the sultan about the Sand Cobras.
The man was aware of the group of bandits but said that his best detective couldn’t find anything as they were good at covering their tracks.
"Well, I managed to capture a member today, and he had this mark on his neck..." I said to the sultan, elaborating on how the curse worked and the fact that my holy panaceas could cure them.
Harun was surprised, but not so much at the efficiency of the potion, but the fact that I had captured one of them when not even his best detective was able to find a clue.
To be fair to the detective, I was only able to find the bandits after I used my "search" spell when the shop’s owner was talking about them.
I thought that if they wanted to keep the man quiet, they would’ve sent someone to keep an eye on his shop. Once again, it was pretty much a coincidence since I wasn’t really expecting one of the bandits to be right next to us, albeit separated by a wall.
Still, my companions had talked about how they had seen people wearing white robes walking in the city, so it’s not like it was hard to locate them.
I got curious about the supposed detective and asked about him, to which the sultan said that the best detective in his kingdom was a man named Farin.
He was the son of one of the best doctors in the nation, with whom the sultan had a good relationship.
’Hmm, it couldn’t be... right?’ I thought.
"Harun, what’s the doctor’s name?" I asked, expecting the worst.
"His name is Caleb. He is a good man who took care of my father when he fell ill..." the sultan replied.
I sighed in disappointment as I was about to break the bad news to the sultan.
"You see. The bandit I captured said that their leader’s name was Caleb, a doctor..." I said with a bit of an awkward tone, as Harun had just praised the man five seconds before.
The sultan looked angry, and expectedly so. The man who had supposedly helped his father when he fell ill was now controlling a network of human trafficking in his country.
When he asked me for proof, I told him that I didn’t have anything on me that could prove his involvement. Contrary to the Crimson Scorpions, these bandits didn’t wear an iron pin that I could take with me as medals.
I told him that we were holding the bandit at the inn since we didn’t have a hiding spot along with the people from the tailoring shop, so the sultan told me to bring them to the palace immediately.
I teleported to the inn’s room, startling everyone except for my companions, and asked them to touch my hands and arms so that I could teleport them to the palace.
When I brought them back to the palace, I appeared right outside the sultan’s room since I didn’t want to get all these people inside with me while Harun was wearing his pajamas, or whatever you would call that outfit.
A few seconds later, one of the servants opened the door to the room, and the sultan was wearing his regal robes as he ordered everyone present to take a seat.
Harun directed his words at the captured bandit and, with a reasonable tone, asked the man to explain everything that had happened to him.
’Harun may be very different from Empress Lysandra, but he does seem like a good ruler... I wonder why he declined the empire’s request for alliance.’ I thought.
The bandit elaborated on the inner workings of the Sand Cobras, saying that the leader would make deals with poor families to buy their family members. However, it didn’t matter if the family agreed or not, as they would kidnap whoever they wanted anyway.
The man confirmed that the mastermind behind everything was Doctor Caleb and said that he had seen his son, Farin, walk around the area a few times and even saw him help move the prisoners.
Caleb was so rich that he had managed to hire a squadron of experienced fighters and assassins, who were the people who took on the most dangerous and secretive jobs.
The sultan asked about the curse, and the bandit told us that people who refused to sell their families were cursed and forced to work for them by committing crimes, saying that the curse would activate and kill anyone who spoke anything related to the Sand Cobras.
As the man kept elaborating, I got a telepathic message from Vespera, who had been watching over Caleb’s house to make sure that nothing strange was happening.
[Ichiro. There is movement...] Said Vespera, who was stationed outside on top of a roof.
"Harun..." I said to the man and locked eyes with him, making him understand that events were unfolding.
