Chapter 128: Missing Letters

Chapter 128: Missing Letters

A few minutes after we had freed the chained people and secured all of the Sand Cobras’ members, the royal soldiers arrived with the sultan himself.

The guards started taking the bandits into custody, but I told them to split them up with the people who had the flower tattoo on their necks, as those were coerced into committing crimes with a curse.

"So, it was true. Caleb... Why?" the sultan asked the corrupt doctor, who was sitting on the ground with Vespera’s spiderwebs holding his movements.

"To survive... Harun..." Caleb replied coldly as the guards arrived and took him away.

I explained to the sultan that it was a plan from the devil Zagor, as a very similar situation was happening in the Droman Empire, and told him everything I had found out during my time there.

"I see. The devil wants to weaken his enemies from the inside..." the sultan muttered.

Now that the empire was relevant in our conversation, I inquired why he had denied the empire’s petition for an alliance against Zagor.

However, the sultan acted confused at my statement, saying that he hadn’t received any messages from the empire in years.

"What? You didn’t get a letter from them when Kalusia started their attacks?" I asked again, but the sultan shook his head.

"I actually sent a letter to the empress a few weeks ago. I’m guessing that didn’t reach her either..." Harun said, giving me a bad feeling.

I knew that the empress was on her way to the frontlines, and she could have already been there since it had been over a week after I left the empire.

"Harun... I got a bad feeling about this..." I said before asking who was responsible in his palace for sending and receiving letters, then told him to detain them immediately.

Right at that moment, I used my voice crystal that was meant to be for the empress, but for some reason, she had left it at the capital since Jen used it to call me a few days after we left.

Hoping that a trustworthy person would hear it, I sent a message explaining the situation about the missing letters between the two nations and told them to detain the person responsible for receiving and sending them.

Not even two minutes later, I got a response, and it ended up being Princess Arabella, saying that she had ordered the guards to do it immediately as the secretary was in charge of those affairs.

Even if those people weren’t guilty, they needed to be detained to investigate before any more letters got lost.

I knew that communication was the best weapon in a large-scale battle like this, and I thought I had the upper hand with my voice crystals. However, I wasn’t expecting the devil’s army to think of a similar strategy and disrupt their enemies’ communication like this.

"This was a trap..." I said to the sultan.

I explained that the letters were either intercepted or deliberately destroyed so Kalusia could lure the empress out of the capital to the frontlines.

Their plan must have been to have her reach the battle with no support from Aridonia and no healing resources from Jen. Of course, we had taken care of the latter, but she would still need backup.

If this was a trap to lure her out, then there was no doubt that Zagor would send most of his forces to assassinate Lysandra.

The sultan widened his eyes and ordered the soldiers to summon all of their forces as they began strategizing a way to push the Kalusia army back from the desert to their territory.

It would take over a week for their backup to get to the border between the desert and the Droman Empire, which wasn’t quick enough as they would probably arrive to find the Kalusia army taking the border cities.

There was only one thing that came to my mind, and that was teleporting as many soldiers as we could to bring them closer to the location of the battle.

When I flew from Droman to Aridonia, we passed by the border with the desert, but the battles were nowhere close as they were supposedly attacking from the south, and the capital of the desert was to the north.

The closest I could bring the soldiers was to the part of the border that I had seen, which was one day away from the empress’ camp.

It would take a lot of MP, but as long as I kept drinking my potions, I could manage to bring a bunch of the soldiers with me, especially if Vespera helped me out.

I told the sultan of my plan, and without wasting any time, the soldiers began lining up in groups on the main street, as we didn’t want to waste time moving them all out of the city or to the palace’s courtyard.

Each group had around twenty soldiers, and thanks to Vespera’s spider legs, she was able to make contact with more than fifteen of them and teleport them to the border.

Meanwhile, I could only take a maximum of six or seven soldiers as there weren’t that many areas of my body to touch.

We ended up transporting five thousand Aridonian knights, who were adept at fighting and traversing the desert, even during the cold nights.

The sultan stayed in the capital as we still needed to find out who was intercepting the letters between the two nations and changing their contents, and Princess Arabella was also working on that from her side.

As the Aridonian soldiers started mobilizing through the desert in the middle of the night, I thought it would be a good idea for me and my companions to go ahead and fly there first.

I had a terrible feeling the moment we captured Caleb and found out about the missing letters, and now that I was marching toward the empress with five thousand soldiers, I still didn’t feel completely reassured.

The man who led the charge was a veteran soldier called Samir, so I told him that I was going to be flying ahead, and he said they would make it to the battle by noon the next day.
