Chapter 287 - Chapter 287 287 Underground World

Chapter 287: 287 Underground World Chapter 287: 287 Underground World It was a strange language, coarse and rather commanding.

After the camera adjusted to the light, Chen Xu finally saw the scene outside the door. Four people stood there, dressed in black armor, wearing helmets and holding weapons resembling broadswords. They showed great deference to the clone, half-hiding their bodies, conducting a peculiar form of etiquette.

The clone, without saying a word, walked out.

Outside was a huge square with odd patterns etched into the ground, covering the entire area.

Not far off, several massive circular columns resembled supports for an underground world.

The columns had lights on them, and the dazzling light was coming from there. Due to the brightness of these lights, it was impossible to see how tall the columns were; farther up, it was all darkness.

Because of the four people behind him, the clone did not look closely and walked straight ahead.

This square was vast, and apart from those four, no other people were visible.

He continued walking until he reached the limits of the illuminated area and soon after, he encountered a wall. In the darkness, he faintly discerned a few passages.

The clone walked toward the closest passage and after passing through, arrived at another enormous square. Unlike the previous one, this place was teeming with people. High buildings were visible at a glance.

Two people guarded the exit of the passage, and on seeing him emerge, they performed a greeting, remained silent, and did not obstruct him.

“An underground world, huh…”

Chen Xu had already guessed as much and curiously observed this subterranean human dwelling.

The square had massive circular columns at intervals, each topped with a large, circular lamp emitting a golden glow that illuminated a great distance. These were also the light sources for the square.

“It’s strange, why is it built so high? If it were divided into several floors, it could accommodate more people.” Chen Xu observed, somewhat puzzled.

Though it was called a square, the area was actually vast; at least from the video perspective, it was impossible to see its borders.

Having crossed an open area, the clone finally entered a main street. He saw some pedestrians, both men and women, wearing clothes with an exotic flair. These people automatically stepped aside when they encountered the clone.

“Does he have any distinct features?” Chen Xu wondered, curious. Whether it was the initial four people, the guards at the passage, or even the pedestrians on the street, everyone was very respectful towards the clone; there was definitely a reason.

“Could it be the clothes he’s wearing?”

That was what Chen Xu guessed, since the clone had no other quickly identifiable features.

Apart from the pedestrians, he also took note of the buildings along the street. How should he put it–they felt somewhat incongruent; they were beautiful in style, yet lacked the industrial beauty of modern architecture.

This was interesting.

It was like watching a movie as he followed the clone’s steps, exploring this subterranean world.

The clone did not linger and crossed this area through the main route, reaching the end where another passage was located. Guards were also stationed there, and seeing him, they did not obstruct him either.

After passing through the passage, another vast space unfolded…

The entire underground world seemed to be composed of such massive spaces.

The clone seemed to realize his clothes were too conspicuous; while passing through a passageway, he took them off and changed into another outfit.

Considering the clone did not speak the language, he had prepared a package for this entry, containing not only clothes but also some food and water.

After changing clothes, although his style still clashed somewhat with the locals, he no longer attracted as much attention.

Chen Xu didn’t observe too many details. Except for the beginning, he fast-forwarded the rest.

Then, half a month later, after passing through another passageway, the clone finally saw a different scene without dazzling lights or massive circular columns.

This was a much smaller space, the only light source being a central lamp emitting a white glow which grew faint with distance.

Chen Xu’s first impression was of filth and disarray. Both the people on the streets and the buildings bore a stark contrast to the earlier spaces, reminiscent of the disparity between a slum and an affluent neighborhood.

Unfortunately, the clone couldn’t communicate with them in their language, making it impossible to gather more intelligence.

The further he walked, the worse the conditions became.

Eventually, after passing through a heavily guarded passage, the clone arrived at an uninhabited space.

“Is this an abandoned dwelling or a natural underground cave?” Chen Xu wondered, surprised that such places still existed in the underground world.

The clone lit a torch, and the firelight revealed plants growing all around; he stayed there for a while before heading back through the passage.

Then, the clone began to head back as food and water were running low.

Feng Song had performed dissections on the original bodies of the clones. Their physiological structures differed significantly from humans, evident in their higher efficiency in utilizing energy from food; they were more resistant to hunger and thirst.

A single meal and a minimal amount of water sufficed for a day, making them much easier to sustain than humans.

Even so, the food and water he carried could last at most a month. He had been ordered to bring back everything he observed and was dutifully fulfilling his mission.

The clone’s return journey wasn’t as smooth, especially when trying to enter the “rich area” and being blocked from crossing.

He had no choice but to change back into his original clothes and use another passage, which this time, went smoothly.

The clothes he wore were clearly a symbol of identity. Chen Xu speculated that this garment signified possession of parasitic armor.

If his speculation was correct, it also meant that warriors capable of wearing parasitic armor were a minority of elites in the underground world.

The clone hastened his return, encountering no issues until he tried to enter the original plaza and was stopped.

The two guards were saying something, but the clone couldn’t understand them. At this point, he had no choice but to force his way through.

The clone was physically formidable, vastly surpassing even Chen Xu in strength. With a close-range surprise attack, he swiftly killed the two guards and rushed into the passageway.

Upon reaching the plaza, he encountered the same four people again.

After a fierce battle, the clone won, though he was severely injured himself. As he took the elevator up, he saw reinforcements from the underground just entering.

After reaching the surface tunnel, the clone ran towards the cave’s exit and soon heard footsteps behind him; the underground dwellers had caught up.

In the end, without even having time to wear his protective suit, he opened the large door and ran wildly, collapsing outside the cave.

When the video plunged into darkness, Chen Xu felt a complex emotion. Although it was a clone, the spirit and will to complete the mission at all costs stirred something in him.

He took off his glasses, quickly calming his emotions, and pondered the scenes he had seen in the video.

The intelligence brought back by the clone was incredibly valuable, revealing that a group of humans was surviving underground.

Though it was a brief overview, the content of the video allowed Chen Xu to roughly assess the technological level of the underground dwellers, confident that they couldn’t muster a large army to launch an obliteration attack.

No parasitic armor was seen, which suggested it was a rare type of troop.

However, he didn’t take them lightly. A civilization capable of creating such an underground world must have a decent level of technology. Even a leaky boat has three pounds of nails; it wouldn’t be surprising if the underground people had inherited some powerful weapons.

Chen Xu decided to continue strengthening his defenses. The clone’s forceful exit could potentially lead to other changes.

The specific arrangements would have to wait until after analyzing the intelligence from the video. He had watched it in fast forward, skipping over most of the content.

Such meticulous work was better left to the bioengineered beings, who had more patience.
