Chapter 286 - Chapter 286 286 Intelligence
Chapter 286: 286 Intelligence Chapter 286: 286 Intelligence Chen Xu arrived at the control center and asked, “What happened?”
The duty officer Zheng Ma stood up and said, “The cloned body has returned.”
Chen Xu was somewhat surprised. He had sent the cloned body to that cave over a month ago and had heard nothing since. He thought the plan had failed. Unexpectedly, it had actually returned.
“Where is he?”
Zheng Ma replied, “When we found him, he had suffered serious injuries and could not be saved, he’s already dead. However, the bio-intelligence brain was successfully recovered.”
He’s dead?
Chen Xu frowned slightly. It seemed likely, he’d been discovered, but he’d need to see the recording to know the specifics.
He asked, “Has the data from the bio-brain been extracted?”
“It’s been extracted.”
“Send it to my computer,” Chen Xu said. The data on the intelligent life forms of this planet was important, but there was no rush. He could wait until the evening to review it.
He asked, “Has the cloned body been taken to the biological laboratory?”
“Yes.”
Chen Xu then left the control center and headed to the biological laboratory. Just as he rounded the corner, he saw a female bioengineered human walking out of the laboratory, causing him to pause in slight surprise.
He recognized this female bioengineered human, named Qian Rou. If he remembered correctly, according to the lottery results, she formed a family unit with Feng Song.
Why was she here?
Qian Rou’s work station was on the robot production line, which was quite far from here.
In the moment Chen Xu was lost in thought, she had already left in another direction. Given her hurried pace, she was likely rushing back to work.
With lingering curiosity, he entered the biological laboratory and saw Feng Song sitting in front of the experimental table, eating.
Immediately, he understood.
Qian Rou had come to bring food.
“Mr. Chen.” Feng Song saw him enter, quickly put down his spoon, and stood up, saying, “You’ve come to see the body of the cloned body, haven’t you? He…”
“No rush.” Chen Xu waved his hand, interrupting him, “You keep eating, I’ll just take a look and leave.”
Feng Song hesitated a bit, “But…”
Chen Xu patted his shoulder, encouraging him to sit back down, and asked, “This food, did Qian Rou bring it for you?”
Feng Song replied with some unease, “I told her there was no need, but she insisted on bringing it.”
“That’s quite nice of her. Alright, I’ll come back later.” Chen Xu said, turning to leave the biological laboratory. As he walked out the door, a faint smile crossed his face.
Today’s events were totally unexpected.
The earliest batch of bioengineered humans had been with him for nearly three years, always maintaining poker faces. He had never seen any other emotion in them besides the need to eat and sleep, no different from robots.
All this time, he had treated them as if they were robots, ensuring they got six hours of sleep, but beyond that, it was all work. Resting was not an option, let alone days off. They worked seventeen or eighteen-hour days.
So far, he had over two hundred bioengineered humans under his command. None had ever complained or expressed hardship no matter how tiring or difficult the tasks were. They always did their best to carry out his orders.
Chen Xu had originally thought that bioengineered humans were devoid of emotion.
Until that moment, his view of bioengineered humans had changed slightly; apparently, they were not completely without feelings.
He remembered that when he had planned to pair bioengineered humans into family units, he had asked everyone’s opinion. The answer was submission to the arrangements.
So he set them up based on that, using a computer to randomly pair them up. Other than the rule of avoiding marriages between those with the same surname, there were no objections. Everyone just accepted the outcome.
Now, Qian Rou had come to deliver food to Feng Song. This might seem trivial, but it was the first time Chen Xu saw a bioengineered human take the initiative to do something beyond their work duties, which was significant.
What exactly caused this change in her?
Chen Xu already had an answer in his mind.
“It seems I can’t continue to exploit the bioengineered humans so ruthlessly.” he thought to himself. “Seventeen or eighteen hours of work is a bit excessive; it needs to change. Let’s start by adjusting it to twelve hours…”
…
Chen Xu walked into the living area and pushed aside all the thoughts in his mind.
He was now able to separate work from life. Upon returning to the living area, he would not think about work unless an emergency arose. The primary reason for this, of course, was Luo Xiyun. Only when you’ve lost something do you learn to appreciate what you have. He did not want their time together to be disrupted by trivial matters.
Entering the living area involved passing through a door, behind which was a foyer-like space, and then the main hall beyond. There was a sofa and a coffee table.
He had set it up this way to create a sense of home.
If one day he returned and Luo Xiyun, Yang Jinxia, and Bai Jinxuan were sitting there chatting, that would truly be a dreamlike day.
However, he also knew that this was just a beautiful vision, one that would likely never be realized in his lifetime.
Luo Xiyun and Yang Jinxia, not to mention their inherent pride. Bai Jinxuan was the same–in her determination to find him, she would stop at nothing, but that didn’t mean she was willing to share her lover with other women.
This is human nature, to expect them to willingly accept each other’s existence is a fool’s dream. As long as they didn’t come to blows, he would be content.
Chen Xu walked into the living room and saw Luo Xiyun sitting on the couch, daydreaming. When she saw him enter, her eyes suddenly focused.
“You…” He was about to speak when Luo Xiyun suddenly snorted coldly, stood up, threw the pillow in her arms forcefully onto the couch, turned, and entered her room, closing the door with a bang.
This outburst seemed somewhat inexplicable. She had been fine just moments ago, so why the sudden change of face?
Chen Xu scratched his head; he had only been out and back for ten minutes.
Could it be her time of the month? No, that wasn’t right, it wasn’t the right time…
Since he couldn’t figure it out, he didn’t dwell on it. Women are emotional creatures; sometimes, they probably don’t even know why they’re angry. There was no point in guessing their thoughts. He would stick to his own pace.
He saw the food on the table was still there, so he sat down and continued eating. He really hadn’t had enough to eat yet.
After eating, he sat on the couch, took out his glasses terminal, and put them on, beginning to look at the data brought back by the clone.
Biological brain technology was still immature, currently useful only as a video recorder. It could record what the user saw and heard.
After opening the video file, the first thing Chen Xu saw was his own perspective–the conversation he had with the clone.
He pressed fast forward, skimming over several hours of footage, and went straight to the part where they entered the cave.
To avoid startling the quarry, he hadn’t sent any robots into the cave and had no idea what it was like inside. However, for more than a month now, no other humans had come out from it.
Now, he was finally about to unveil its mystery.
Chen Xu picked up a drink beside him, took a sip, and slowly began to watch.
After entering the cave, which was somewhat dark, the camera soon adjusted to the light, and he could see clearly inside; it was a large cave, and one could obviously see marks of human intervention.
“A cave excavated by humans?”
Chen Xu thoughtfully continued to watch.
The clone crouched down, touching the ground. There, a moss-like organism was growing. Due to the dim light, he couldn’t see the color clearly, but it was certainly not green.
He stood up and continued walking. After about ten minutes, a door appeared in front.
Chen Xu, reminded of the underground facility from his second dreamscape, became even more certain of a certain suspicion in his mind.
The clone stood in front of the door, seemingly pondering. After a while, he moved to the right where there was a blackened area on the wall distinctly different from the rest.
He reached out to touch it, and with a beep, the door opened amid a rumbling sound.
Chen Xu noticed it was a very thick door, nearly half a meter thick. Such a door would be nearly impossible to make without being in an industrial era.
“Which means the humans of this planet had a very advanced civilization.”
Chen Xu furrowed his brow and mentally increased their threat level.
With the base’s current strength, facing an industrial nation–even one at a wartime level–there was little chance of victory. The reason was simple: there were too few combat troops. If they were to face continuous bombardment, the base’s destruction would only be a matter of time.
In the video, the clone entered the gate, and immediately, amid more rumbling, the door closed again.
Behind the door was an even larger corridor. Suddenly, a warning appeared on the clone’s helmet: the radiation levels outside were now at a safe standard.
The half-meter thick door had blocked the radiation from outside.
The clone quickly took off his protective suit and left it beside the door, continuing onward. The walls in the surroundings gave off an ancient vibe, likely standing for a very long time.
Not far along, a huge void appeared to the side, square in shape, suggesting there should have been a door here.
The clone walked over, seeing a bottomless pit below.
He proceeded further, encountering another similar void with a pit below.
Until the third one, he finally saw a complete door. This time with experience, he immediately placed his hand on the blackened area.
The door opened, revealing a vast space inside.
Chen Xu realized what this was–an elevator leading underground.
The clone entered the elevator, the door automatically closed, and it began to descend.
Just from the footage, Chen Xu couldn’t tell how fast it was descending. After a full ten minutes or so, the elevator stopped, and the door opened on its own.
A blinding light forced Chen Xu to instinctively close his eyes, and then, from the video, a voice emerged–a human voice.
