Chapter 288 - Chapter 288 288 Experiment

Chapter 288: 288 Experiment Chapter 288: 288 Experiment Chen Xu was lost in thought when he heard a click, looked up, and saw Luo Xiyun pushing the door open and walking out, her expression much softer than before. She said, “Let’s go.”

It was probably about two in the afternoon; naturally, it was time to study.

Chen Xu stood up and asked, “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine,” Luo Xiyun said, heading outside.

Her mood changed quickly, both coming and going. Chen Xu figured he might never fully understand what they were thinking in this lifetime.

The two walked through the corridor to the study room, where Chen Xu, as usual, went over to the experiment table and tinkered with his various devices.

Luo Xiyun sat in a chair, and just before putting on her glasses, she asked, “Nothing serious happened, right?”

Chen Xu was caught off guard for a moment before realizing she was referring to the earlier incident when he had left in the middle of the meal. Laughing, he said, “It was just a minor issue; it’s been taken care of.”

“Oh.”

Chen Xu could tell by her reaction that it wasn’t the answer she wanted and couldn’t help but wonder, what exactly did she want to ask?

Reflecting on her sudden outburst earlier, he faintly guessed what it might be.

Luo Xiyun didn’t ask further and put on her glasses.

Chen Xu glanced at her, smiled faintly, and quickly turned his attention back to the experiment table, continuing the work on the small gadget he hadn’t finished that morning.

An hour later, Chen Xu finally completed his task, tested it a few times, and, satisfied, placed it into the designated cabinet for finished products.

He glanced at Luo Xiyun, who was still seated studying. Not wanting to disturb her, he left the study room and headed to the bioengineering laboratory.

There was a very important experiment scheduled for the afternoon.

Inside the lab, Feng Song was making the final preparations. Seeing Chen Xu come in, he said, “It’ll be ready soon.”

Chen Xu didn’t rush him, walked further inside, and, upon seeing the dissected clone’s body, asked, “How are bodies like this handled?”

An assistant nearby replied, “They’re usually recycled.”

Chen Xu stared at the clone’s intact face for a while and said, “Bury him in the cemetery.”

“Yes, sir.” Though the assistant was puzzled, he obeyed the order.

Chen Xu had set aside an area as a cemetery when planning the facility, knowing that Level 1 Bionic People didn’t have long lifespans and the cemetery would be needed within a few years.

He felt some sense of ceremony was necessary. After all, bionic people and robots are different.

Turns out, the first one to be buried in the cemetery would be a clone of a person from this planet, something he had never anticipated.

“It’s ready.”

Feng Song’s voice interrupted his thoughts.

Chen Xu gave the clone lying there one last look and turned to walk away.

“Mr. Chen, please take a seat here.” Feng Song gestured to a chair nearby. “The experiment can begin now. Do you have any other instructions?”

Chen Xu said, “Start it.”

With his command, several screens lit up in front of him, targeting a huge cage made of transparent material from various angles. Inside the cage, there was a transparent cylindrical container housing a black substance wriggling inside the parasite.

The cage was set against an outdoor backdrop, surrounded by about ten or so robots.

Today’s experiment might pose some danger, and Chen Xu made ample preparations in advance. He not only located the experiment outside the base but also arranged for robots to stand guard nearby.

While watching movies, Chen Xu saw how some critical bases were destroyed due to negligence, allowing monsters being experimented on to escape. It was simply too brilliant a blunder.

When arranging for this experiment, he thought of this possibility. To be safe, he made such preparations so that even if something unexpected happened, they would be able to cope with it.

Feng Song had studied the parasite for more than a month and had grasped all its various characteristics. Now, they were going to test the abilities it would have after parasitizing an animal.

A robot held a black box and placed it into a cage. The box opened, and out scurried a white mouse, which suddenly stood up and darted out, smacking into the edge of the cage.

At that moment, one end of the cylindrical container placed in the center automatically opened, and a dark, viscous substance emerged, resembling a black octopus at first glance.

It quickly pounced onto the white mouse, and in a swift envelopment, it permeated the mouse’s body.

Chen Xu stared intently at the screen, noticing the mouse’s body swelling at a visible rate, its eyes turning a bloody red. When the parasite had fully entered its body, the mouse’s height reached one meter.

“Truly miraculous.”

Chen Xu watched the mouse’s body inflate like a balloon, truly an eye-opening experience. He couldn’t fathom how the parasite managed it.

On another screen, originally displaying the mouse’s various data readings, the numbers had soared rapidly but then suddenly lost connection. This meant that all the sensory components implanted in the mouse were destroyed, leaving them without real-time data.

The engorged mouse appeared agitated, its eyes targeting the robots outside the cage, its hind claws scratching the ground with a shrill friction sound.

Through the video feed, Chen Xu observed the mouse’s eyes and felt as if they held a human-like glint. His mind stirred–had it developed intelligence?

Then, he considered the thought ludicrous. A parasite was like a cluster of viruses; it couldn’t possibly have an organ like a brain, nor anything akin to intelligence.

At that moment, the enlarged mouse’s body began to tremble violently. Moments later, countless black liquids were squeezed out from its body, leaving behind a grotesque carcass.

“It lasted less than a minute.”

Chen Xu wasn’t surprised by this scene. The parasite caused the mouse’s size to increase tenfold, certainly bringing fatal consequences.

Feng Song said, “Next, let’s try a different animal.”

Quickly, the robots brought another animal. It was a monkey with black fur, not very large and quite thin.

After the monkey entered the cage, the parasite immediately pounced, moving too fast for the monkey to evade. It was struck in the chest.

The parasite rapidly merged into its body.

This time, there was no significant change to the monkey’s physique, only its eyes turned somewhat crimson.

Chen Xu paid special attention to its eyes, still noting an unusual glint within them.

The monkey stood still for a few seconds before suddenly moving, punching the cage with a clear ‘bang’. The screen displayed the force of that punch, over one ton.

Such strength was impossible for a monkey to possess. The parasite had enhanced its strength to an inconceivable degree. No matter how one looked at it, its slender body shouldn’t possess such power.

“This is unbelievable.”

Feng Song stared wide-eyed, murmuring to himself. Normally composed, he was now somewhat disconcerted.

Chen Xu looked at the various readings displayed on the screen, knowing the experiment’s yield was immense.

Then, the monkey transformed, with black scales emerging from within, covering its entire body. More and more scales appeared, bulging out its slim figure. In a blink, it had become a giant monkey over two meters tall.

It smashed the transparent cage with its fists, creating banging sounds.

After a dozen punches, the monkey’s body also collapsed, and the parasite was squeezed out again, leaving behind a horrific corpse.

Feng Song, somewhat excitedly, said, “Next, let’s try another animal.”

The day’s experiments would continue. After the monkey came the gorilla, and then, the clones.
