Chapter 90: Great Fortune

Nick was silent for a bit as he thought about the possibility of attaining the ability to wield magic. He was excited.

Unfortunately, it seemed like it was very unlikely.

"So...About that promise?" Squawks rubbed his hands together as he interrupted Nick’s daydreams.

’Drat.’ He had tried to distract Squawks and Lily to give himself some more time to think about how to give them what they wanted. Unfortunately, he didn’t have an answer. He looked at Squawks.

"Do you two mind if I talk to Mijko for a minute?" He asked.

Squawks nodded.

"Privately," Nick added when Squawks and Lily didn’t move.

"Oh," He answered, but he and Lily stood up and stepped aside at least.

Mijko walked over closer to Nick and leaned in so that Nick could whisper in her ear.

"I don’t have what they want?" Nick didn’t know what to do. He hoped Malak, who made the promise for him, would have a plan.

"Hmm. Malak did say that could happen. Are you sure you don’t have anything?"

"Not anything that counts as great fortune." Nick shook his head. His cutlery and tools should be well-made for this world, and he might have some silverware in his storage. Those were the only things that would fetch some money, by the sound of it. But it wouldn’t be enough to count as great fortune.

Mijko frowned until her gaze caught a pile of arrows on the porch behind Nick. She scanned their surroundings and saw a felled tree on the ground. She also saw that several of the branches along it had been chopped off. The thickness of the stumps of those branches matched the arrows. Even if it was a little off, there was a pile of wood chips and flakes on the ground.

Her eyes lit up.

Those were arrows made from wood from the center of Tiabe. The ones closest to her looked shabby as shit. But the neat, orderly pile right beside them...Those were jewels.

"Those." She nodded toward the arrows.

Nick looked back in confusion. He was a little doubtful when he saw the arrows. But then he remembered what Mijko had just explained about the center of the forest being filled with power and maybe had a bunch of power crystals in the ground.

Trees grew by extracting nutrients deep in the ground with their long roots. If there were power crystals in the ground, the trees would have the best access to them.

The tree hadn’t looked very magical, but maybe that was just compared to trees outside the center. Nick didn’t know. He hadn’t seen any other trees, after all.

He nodded.

"I’ll have to ask Nuir first. He was the one who made them."

"Of course."

Nick got up and headed inside to where Nuir was hiding.

Fortunately, the tentacle had pulled him inside before the humans arrived. Nick wasn’t sure if Nuir would try anything, but it would be traumatic nonetheless.

The problem would be to get Nuir to agree to give those arrows to those humans. Nick almost didn’t want to.

But this was important.

Squawks and Lily could help Malak and the others connect the Lowat tribe to humans who had essentially attacked a member of the forest.

That wasn’t all.

It would also confirm Nick’s suspicions.

Nick found Nuir sitting by the window, looking at the two humans. His fingernails dug into the windowsill, and he gnashed his teeth so hard that Nick was starting to consider making soup for dinner. But the emotions swirling in his eyes were complex.

Those two weren’t the humans who had killed his mother. They were friendly with each other and most likely had family or friends back home.

Nuir temporarily set aside the fact that he might not be able to kill them and focused on what would happen if he did.

He wasn’t sure. But he might put another kid in a position like him. He didn’t want that.

Nick had taught him. Not all humans were bad. Until he confirmed which ones were bad and deserved to be killed, he shouldn’t act recklessly.

Nick would have wanted to disagree with it if he knew that’s what Nuir thought.

But it helped Nuir stay calm and focus on the present. He was so focused that he didn’t notice Nick until he crouched down by the window.

"I wouldn’t say those two are harmless, but I don’t think they’ll harm us. In fact, they’re here to help."

"Help?" Nuir asked with a frown. He didn’t think humans knew the meaning of the word.

"Not for free, though."

That sounded more like humans.

"I’ll..." Nick hesitated. He glanced at the tentacle. The tentacle’s tip bobbed up and down. It wanted him to tell Nuir. Nick sighed.

"I’ll tell you the details tonight. But right now, are you alright with handing over the arrows you made to them? We can always make more tomorrow."

Nuir was silent as he looked at Squawks and Lily talk with Vafrid and Mijko, who had given them a big smile and a hopeful thumbs-up when Nick entered the house.

He gave a single, slow nod.

"Thanks."

’I guess we’re pulling out the ice cream tonight.’

Nuir had worked hard and done a good job on those arrows. Nick knew he had been excited to use them once he made or retrieved his bow. He probably didn’t like the idea of giving them away, much less to a couple of humans.

But Nick had done a lot for him over the past couple of days. And he had said he would explain. Nuir decided that he was giving Nick a chance.

If the details weren’t enough to warrant Nick giving away his arrows, Nuir would simply never trust him again. He would find another way to live.

Nick headed out and grabbed the pile of arrows.

Squawks and Lily were skeptical until Lily pointed at the tree they came from and mentioned that they were made by an expert craftsman. Their eyes slowly widened.

Not only were the arrows made by an expert from Tiabe, but they were also made from wood from the center of the forest. It was next to impossible to even find a single branch from the center of Tiabe, much less an entire stack of arrows.

This was something that they could sell for whatever price they wanted.

Definitely great fortune.
