Chapter 91: Ice Cream

Squawks and Lily were clearly satisfied with the great fortune Nick had bestowed upon them, even if he hadn’t given them his heart. However, to Nick’s surprise, they didn’t leave at once. They already knew what Malak wanted from them, so Nick and Mijko thought that they would get one with it as soon as possible.

That wasn’t the case.

Instead, they looked at Mijko, Nick, and Vafrid with serious gazes.

"Now, don’t hold this against us. We just wanted our payment before we told you anything. We mercenaries like guarantees," Lily said.

The three forest dwellers frowned and waited for them to continue.

"We kind of already know what you’re looking for."

"Cut to the chase." Nick frowned.

Lily glanced at Squawks, who nodded.

"The forest dweller that you’re looking for, Tair, is most likely in Vorad. A day or two ago, rumors started surfacing about the Torak Syndicate getting hold of a member of one of Tiabe’s tribes."

Mijko nodded

They already had the information that Malak wanted. They just hadn’t wanted to hand it over before they were paid.

If Nick hadn’t had something to give them, they would have left without telling them about Tair’s whereabouts.

It was just business.

But if they kept that up, they could forget about ever gaining Nick’s heart the metaphorical way.

"Got it. Let’s go, then," Mijko said, turning to leave.

It was important information. She had to share it with Malak and Monkey as soon as possible. She could get Squawks and Lily to tell her everything they knew about Vorad and the Torak syndicate as they walked.

For now, they should just leave the center of the forest and hope that none of the monster kings noticed their haul.

Nick had cut down the tree and participated in turning the branches into arrows. It should be fine. But if it wasn’t, they would know for future reference.

Besides, Squawks and Lily were the ones carrying the arrows. They would be the ones targeted by the monster kings. It would have been one thing if it had happened before, but now, they had already shared the most important information.

It was a good experiment.

Nick looked in the direction they had gone for a while after he could no longer see them. He was worried about the others.

He had never met Tair before, so he didn’t have a face to put on the missing person. But after the kindness and generosity that Sosora had extended to him, Nick felt it was only right to extend similar sentiments toward Tair.

He had done what he could in the current situation. He had fulfilled Malak’s promise and gotten Squawk and Lily’s cooperation. But he felt a little...weak, knowing that was all he could do.

He was also worried about Sosora. Being blind in this world couldn’t be easy, especially not for someone of the Aer tribe. He wondered if there was anything he could do to at least be there for her, even if he couldn’t do anything to improve her condition.

A lightbulb appeared over his head as he got an idea.

He was pretty good at one thing that didn’t require eyes. Cooking. He was going to distract Sosora at least temporarily by charming her with the culinary wonders of Earth.

But he would need a little help to do that. It also wasn’t an immediate priority. Saving Tair and having the Lowat tribe face justice were far more important.

However, Sosora most likely wouldn’t take an active part in that. She could probably come and visit soon.

That meant he had to get the sourdough started yesterday.

Nick didn’t waste any time. He headed inside and started preparing what he could prepare in advance. He rummaged through his fridge to see what he had left. It wasn’t a lot. He would have to ask maybe the Ursa family to get him some food.

Nick froze.

Did the Aer tribe eat chicken?

Logically, chicken or poultry, in general, shouldn’t be a problem since they weren’t the same as the Aer tribe. It wouldn’t be cannibalism or anything.

But Nick knew that he wouldn’t be a fan of eating something that vaguely resembled humans but was different in essence. That made him wonder how the tribes of Tiabe worked, though.

He wouldn’t eat monkeys or primates since they were human ancestors, intelligent, and resembled humans.

But were the tribes of Tiabe distant descendants of animals other than monkeys? Or was their resemblance to animals coincidence? Maybe it was caused by something else?

The power crystals could have had an effect. They might not be radioactive like uranium, but if long-term exposure could make a person suddenly gain the ability to chuck a tree or see into the future, the power crystals were probably like fantasy-radiation.

Instead of giving people cancer, they gave them a small chance of developing superpowers.

Over generations, that might make some people develop animalistic traits. Or it might have made animals develop intelligence and human traits.

Nick thought about a lot of things as he prepared and made dinner for the night. It wasn’t quite soup, but he had made stew with the sausages and vegetables he had left.

Both Nick and Nuir had a lot going on in their heads, and the tentacle didn’t have a mouth, so the dinner was silent. But it ended eventually.

Nick cleaned away the dishes and took out a tub of ice cream and spoons and bowls to eat it with. He considered making a simple caramel sauce for it, but he could tell Nuir was waiting.

He glanced at the tub with almost sad eyes. He had a feeling that getting ice cream would be a lot more difficult than other things in this world. That was why he hadn’t indulged in any yet. However, he had a feeling that it would help Nuir during this conversation.

He sat down in front of Nuir and poked his ice cream as he looked for the right words.

The tentacle also played with the ice cream until it realized that Nick was stalling and tapped him on the back to encourage him.

Nick sighed before taking a breath and looking at Nuir. There was no use stalling.
