Chapter 65: Just In Time

Issa didn’t dare to look once the first sausages slipped into the hot frying pan and started sizzling. But at the same time, she couldn’t not look. She hid behind the closest thing, which just happened to be Tilo.

It wasn’t a very good hiding spot. Tilo barely reached Issa’s underside with the top of his head. Still, she crouched down and did her best to become as small as possible while sneaking a peek.

Eventually, the rich aroma of the fried sausages spread through the clearing. It was too soon to determine whether the taste would be as promised, but it certainly smelled good. It was a more fragrant smell than the one the Ursa tribe had managed to lure out of the sausages the last time they made them.

Everyone else was already in favor of Issa’s idea. They had no reason to think it wouldn’t work. They were just waiting for the sausages to finish to confirm.

Issa was the only one who was worried until she was trembling. It was a little pitiful.

Eventually, the first few sausages were ready. The casings were a little cracked and charred, while the meaty insides were steaming.

It was the result of putting Nick on frying duty instead of a bunch of bears who weren’t used to cooking their food.

Out of habit, the first sausage went to Kai, the Ursa tribe’s officially recognized sausage expert and gourmet.

He sniffed the sausage. No problems with the scent. He traced it with his claw before digging into it and cutting off a piece. Good texture. The casing was easily broken without being overcooked, and the meat inside was hot. Perfectly cooked.

But all of that was the sausage’s appearance. The most important test, the taste test, still remained.

With one ravenous bite, Kai popped the entire sausage into his mouth. He had waited long enough. Juice trickled out of the corner of his mouth as he chewed on the sausage, savoring it with closed eyes. He hummed euphorically as the rich and savory meat filled his mouth.

Bliss.

Seeing Kai relish the sausage like it was paradise given edible form, the others couldn’t wait any longer.

"I hope I’m not too late," A voice interrupted them before they could launch the sausages into their mouths. Lora, Kavam, Muhso, Sosora, Malak, Nick, and Mijko froze.

Eight sausages were done in the first batch. That was how many they could fry at the same time. Issa and Tilo volunteered to wait one round.

Holding the sausages in front of their mouths, the group slowly turned in the direction of the voice.

Monkey stood not far away with a smile on his lips and his hands behind his muscular back.

He was right on time.

He did not volunteer to wait.

Sosora had warned everyone present about Monkey. Unless he volunteered to wait, it was best not to make him. But they were hesitant. How could they hold back when they had the answer to all their questions almost already inside their mouths?

Eventually, Monkey’s gaze landed on Mijko.

Monkey wasn’t rude enough to pressure anyone else into giving him their sausage, even if he was their elder and the leader of a tribe. But Mijko?

She should hand it over without thinking twice.

Mijko blinked once she felt Monkey’s gaze land on her.

She wondered what would happen if she just took a bite before Monkey could do anything. She imagined the consequences. Her stomach rumbled.

The consequences won. She closed her mouth with a regrettable sigh and held the sausage toward Monkey.

"For me?" Monkey asked with a hand on his chest as if he couldn’t believe her generosity.

Mijko nodded with closed eyes to keep the tears from welling up. She didn’t want to see the tragedy of someone else taking and eating her sausage.

"Oh, my, you’re much too kind, Mijko." Monkey snagged the sausage without so much as a second look at Mijko. Her stomach could rumble the rest of the night for all he cared. Clearly, she needed the discipline.

Monkey ended up with the sausage in the same position as the others, with the tip hanging just outside his open mouth. He noticed the others staring at him.

"Are we waiting for anything?" He asked.

They shook their heads. Together with Monkey, they enjoyed the first batch of sausage in silent bliss.

Everyone had shown up on empty stomachs to be able to eat as much sausage as possible. Their hunger had exploded as the aroma spread, and it had done it again when they saw Kai eat.

The first sausage was delicious and did nothing to sate that hunger, but it hit the spot.

When they were done, Monkey gestured at Mijko to take over the frying pan from Nick. Nick saw it and figured that Monkey wanted to talk to him. He was a little curious. What could the powerful leader of the Gezercher tribe have to say?

It was probably just a greeting, but Nick was still curious. He followed the short, muscular, youthful, hairy, old man to the side.

Monkey glanced from side to side before getting Nick to lean in close. It only made Nick even more curious.

"When you first saw me, you thought my name was very fitting, didn’t you?"

Nick froze. He had not expected that question at all. But that wasn’t why he froze. It was because Monkey was completely right.

Sosora had warned—informed him about Monkey. Nick figure it was a title of sorts. And then he saw Monkey. Nick wasn’t sure what kind of Monkey he looked like, but he looked like a monkey. Short smooth fur on his body. A lot of arms compared to the rest of his body. Fuzzy round ears on the side of his head. A slightly odd stance and feet pointing outward.

Nick constantly found himself glancing at Monkey’s back, expecting a tail to dance around, even if there was none to be found.

He hung his head.

"I did. I’m sorry." There was no point hiding it.
