Chapter 66: Party Crashers
Nick held the silence awkwardly. It was rude to think that Monkey was an appropriate name for Monkey just because he looked like one. But it was his thoughts. He didn’t exercise control over them. His mistake was that he had let them show on his face.
He was worried about Monkey’s reaction. He wasn’t worried about his safety. He trusted the tentacle.
But according to Sosora, Monkey had been just as vital in turning the tide as Muhso had been. What if Monkey changed his mind after Nick offended him and decided to turn the tribes against him again?
Nick didn’t want that. They were getting along so well. He was really enjoying himself, the company, and the fruit juice that Mijko and Tilo had brought.
"Haha! Good lad!" But Monkey just laughed loudly and smacked Nick so hard on the back that it felt like he was about to lose his dentures. He didn’t even have dentures.
"Most people just deny it! But not you, brave man!" Monkey continued laughing and patting Nick’s back. He sounded happy and like he didn’t mind it, but then why was he hitting Nick so hard.
However, there wasn’t any malicious intent or grudges.
Nick was just weaker than Monkey had expected, and Monkey soon noticed it.
"Ahem. Anyway. I brought a gift." Monkey took out a sealed, unmarked, slightly dusty glass bottle from seemingly nowhere and handed it to Nick.
"It’s what those kids brought, but for adults. You could open it now..." Monkey glanced at the others. They were already in a festive mood, though still keeping an eye on Monkey and Nick.
"...I think I’ll save it for myself."
"Good call."
If Nick opened the bottle right now, it would probably disappear before he could get a proper taste. But he couldn’t say he wasn’t tempted. Fantasy world liquor. Fantasy world fruit juice was delicious, so it stood to reason that their alcohol was the same.
But it could wait.
He was about to drop it off inside when he noticed that Monkey still had something to say.
"By the way...That wet dog smell around here?" Monkey asked curiously. It was a familiar smell that he couldn’t quite place. Nick tilted his head.
"Wet dog smell?" He couldn’t sense anything. He had no idea what Monkey was talking about.
Before either of them could think of anything, something moved among the trees in front of them.
"If you’ve noticed our presence, old man, just say it. There’s no need to resort to derogatory remarks," A tall man with luscious, long, dark hair said as he stepped out from the shadows with his wolf. Nick’s eyes widened. It was the Phoriae man.
Monkey wasn’t surprised.
"Maybe you shouldn’t be hiding and watching someone throw a party," Monkey shot back.
"Is that something you should say?" The Phoriae man retorted. He made a very good point. The Gezercher tribe was famous for watching over people in secret.
"What are you doing here anyway?" Monkey changed the subject.
The Phoriae man pointed at Nick.
"I was watching him."
Nick pointed at himself in confusion. Hadn’t the Phoriae man said that Nick wasn’t much and that he didn’t need to watch him? Wasn’t he supposed to take his leave? Had he watched Nick all this time.
Monkey raised an eyebrow. He was skeptical.
"Did the sausage lure you in?" The Phoriae man didn’t look at Monkey. He would prefer not to answer.
Fortunately, he had someone to answer for him.
The wolf yipped happily and wagged its tail as it looked at Nick with big eyes.
"...The sausage needs investigating."
Nick blinked.
’Ah.’
Nick held out a hand. The Phoriae man stared at it in confusion. There was no sausage in it. What was Nick doing?
"I’m Nick. Welcome to the first official sausage party." He let his hand hang in the air until the Phoriae man realized it was a greeting.
Hesitantly, the man placed his hand on Nick’s. Monkey rolled his eyes and grabbed the Phoriae man’s hand into the proper position and shook their hands himself.
"It’s a greeting. Since it’s your first meeting, you introduce yourself and show peaceful intentions by shaking hands instead of grabbing your weapons."
"I see..." The man said slowly while retracting his hand. Nick and Monkey looked at him like they were waiting for something. He was confused.
Then, he realized. He hadn’t introduced himself yet.
If he wanted to ’investigate’ the sausages, he could do that much at least.
"My name is Yamanas. This is Utrimdir. Utri works," He said, gesturing at the large wolf by his side. It was the biggest wolf Nick had ever seen. But it was a lot less scary now that he was standing in front of it instead of almost lying down under it.
"Great. Nice to meet you, Yamanas. Utri. The sausages should be ready in a few minutes. There’s fruit juice in those glasses. Feel free. I can grab a bowl for Utri if he also wants some..." Nick’s voice trailed off as he turned around.
The festive atmosphere that had endured even Monkey was frozen. Monkey was scary because he was strong and a leader of one of the more influential tribes. He wasn’t really scary, and it was more than fine as long as they didn’t offend him.
Yamanas and Utrimdir were from a tribe that haunted the nightmares of children and adults alike. They were powerful, scary, mysterious, and often best left as rumors.
And now, a member of the Phoriae tribe had come and crashed their party. Monkey was there.
But the Phoriae rarely, if ever, moved on their own. The rest of his pack could be just steps behind him.
The situation suddenly became scary.
Even Monkey was at a loss for what to do. He was fine. Nick was fine. He couldn’t tell the others to be fine. He knew the place the Phoriae had in people’s hearts.
"Hey! You’re burning them!" Nick shouted, breaking the silence as he rushed over to the sausage.
Suddenly, Yamans and Utrimdir crashing the party became a small matter.
