Chapter 64: Herbal Concotion

Muhso was an experienced warrior. He had seen a lot during his time. His keen insight allowed him to see through to Nick’s nature in a short time and actively realize it while others just thought he was a friendly guy without reflecting much on it.

That was why he was even more confused at the end of his thoughts. He had no idea how Nick was staying in the center of the forest without the monster kings bothering him.

His house looked sturdy, but the monster kings were strong enough to smash through cliffs and dig up the tallest trees in the forest. A sturdy-looking house wouldn’t be enough to deter them. Muhso didn’t feel anything strange when he looked at the house, either.

If anything, the strange thing would be that he didn’t feel that it was anything special.

Muhso frowned. He felt like the solution or answer lay with the house, not with Nick. But he couldn’t figure it out. That also wasn’t why he was at the sausage party.

He had momentarily let his warrior’s curiosity take over, but now, it was time to focus on the important matters. He, Kavam, Lora, and Kai had to show Nick how hard they had worked to develop the art of sausage-making in the past week.

Even if it wasn’t enough to knock Nick out of his socks, the four at least wanted to amaze him with their progress and the taste of their sausages.

So, they got started. They had devised their own method of cleaning pig innards. They used an herbal concoction similar to the one they used when treating wounds.

The one they used when treating wounds sealed those wounds and coagulated the blood. The concoction they used for the innards did something similar, but it also turned the coagulated blood brittle and crumbly. They could then pour or flush the dried blood crumbs out of the innards.

It was a completely different method borne from their experience as warriors. It was effective in removing the waste inside and outside the innards. It also didn’t wear down the casings and increase the risk of the sausages breaking when being cooked.

The only downside was that it might leave behind a certain bitter taste. It could be drowned out with seasonings, but there was always a risk of a bite or two being a little less tasty.

However, the newly-appointed chefs at the Ursa tribe were hard at work trying to figure out a blend that not only did not leave behind a bitter taste, but improved the taste of the sausages instead.

Muhso, Lora, and Kavam were confident that it was only a matter of time before their tribe cracked it.

However, much to their surprise and dismay, their tribe would not end up solving it.

Issa solved it for them.

She could tell which herbs were mostly used in the concoction just by smelling and tasting it.

She had almost been too shy to say anything. Even without tasting the finished sausage, she knew the concoction was so powerful that it would leave behind a bitter taste. She was worried about pointing that out to the powerful and proud Ursa members.

But when she saw the looks of anticipation from the others, she knew she had to do something. Fortunately, one of the herbs she had brought would do something about the taste without affecting the concoction’s properties.

She had been planning to sneak a few leaves into the blend, but she realized two things. She was not sneaky enough. And she would be feeding everyone something they hadn’t agreed to eat.

Left without a choice, she whispered it to Sosora, who decided to announce to everyone that she had something to say.

Issa froze. Everyone stared at her. Even Tilo, who had been absent during the party so far, returned only to look at Issa. He hadn’t been absent, just staying in the shadows and the corner of people’s vision. He also wasn’t used to large groups and had only come because Mijko made him.

But that didn’t mean he wasn’t invested in what was happening.

An announcement by Issa was something he had to hear.

Issa considered turning around and sprinting for her life. She almost did it.

But she decided to be brave for once in her life.

Meekly, with her head hanging low and a voice like the whispers of a mouse in winter, she told the Ursa tribe members about the herbs she had brought since Sosora asked her to bring something.

They weren’t specialty herbs that could only grow in Seg territory or anything. But they were herbs that Issa liked the flavor of and liked to chew on.

It was a herb that the Ursa hadn’t heard of. Other than having a flavor that Issa liked, it didn’t have many other uses. It could be used in cooking. But food for the Ursa tribe before sausage was raw meat.

Only tribes with healing properties or the like were of interest to them.

Naturally, they had never tried Issa’s herb in their concoction.

But there was only one way to find out if what she said was true or not.

Issa suggested that they could just use a small part of the innards and a tiny bit of the concoction to try it out if they were worried.

Lora, Muhso, and Kavam exchanged one glance before tossing that suggestion out the window. It was all or nothing.

They mixed in the leaves and covered their innards, all of them, in the murky goop.

Issa was worried. What if she had been wrong? What if all of their mix was ruined because of her? What if all of the sausages were ruined because of her? She wasn’t sure how she would ever be able to apologize for it.

Even if that happened, no one would hold it against her. It would be a shame.

But it would only be a loss if the sausages were somehow nasty, which should be impossible. Regardless of what happened, as long as the casings were cleaned, the sausages should still end up edible.

Tilo tried to joke with Issa that if the sausages really ended up with a bad taste, she would just have to eat them all.

His timing and delivery weren’t the best, and Issa took it seriously. She really hoped she was right.
