Chapter 61: Excited

Nick was excited. Sosora was excited. Kai was excited. Muhso was excited. Lora and Kavam were excited. Mijko was excited. Tilo was happy to be included. Issa was excited but nervous about suddenly attending an event with so many others. Monkey was excited. Since Sosora had invited him on behalf of the Outsider, he didn’t need to wait for the Ursa tribe to make another batch he could steal from. Tair was curious about the Outsider who had managed to grab so much of Sosora’s attention and excited about sausage made by that Outsider.

Malak was...

"Soso, are you sure about this?" He was anxious and hesitant.

"Huh?"

"I’ll be the only one there not from a tribe that supported the Outsider. Are you sure I’m welcome?"

"Of course you are. Nick invited you, didn’t he? Besides, it’s that elder Atarak who’s to blame. If you had been in charge, the Bawin tribe would have supported Nick, I’m sure," Sosora said firmly.

"..." Malak hesitated. He...had to admit something to Sosora, but he wasn’t sure if he actually had to. It would be best if he did, but he wasn’t sure if she would change the way she looked at him afterward.

Eventually, he took a deep breath and decided to just go for it.

"I’m the one who told my elders about the Outsider’s friendship with the Ursa tribe!" He said in one breath.

In other words, he was the one who had made several of his elders decide not to support Nick. He was the reason why his tribe had decided against siding with Nick. He was also the reason why everyone knew about Nick’s friendship with the Ursa tribe.

By telling his elders about Nick’s friendship with the Ursa tribe, he had spread that information to the other tribes, which had made them all consider turning against Nick and isolating him or casting him out of the forest.

Malak’s actions could have snowballed into a bad ending for Nick.

Malak closed his eyes and clenched his fists by his side as he waited for Sosora’s judgment.

"..." Sosora was silent for what felt like an eternity to Malak. Eventually, she let out a sound that was a sigh, a chuckle, and a snort all at the same time.

"You fool. Sure, you might have done that, but didn’t you also write to the Ursa tribe? The others might have missed it, but you didn’t just write to them, asking for assistance. You wrote most of that speech, didn’t you?"

Nick was already in a precarious position before the details about his friendship with the Ursa tribe became public knowledge. Malak telling his elders about it didn’t change the situation much for Nick.

However, the Ursa tribe’s participation in the meeting and Muhso’s speech had stably flipped the tables on the situation. It was safe to say that it was thanks to that speech and the sausage that the meeting ended so smoothly.

Of course, Monkey’s help was undeniably effective. He made his stance clear, and no one there dared to openly oppose him. It was almost to the point where Sosora wondered if he passed her test despite her failing just because standing against the Lowat tribe was more aligned with his heart.

It certainly seemed like he felt strongly about the situation that had sparked the meeting when he laid into Basla about the uselessness of the kids who bullied Nuir. Sosora wasn’t sure that climbing a wall would have been enough to invoke such convincing acting.

It felt more like Monkey had just threatened her with taking the Lowat tribe’s side because he wanted to see her give it her all. Or because he was sadistic. That was also a possibility.

Malak opened his eyes and looked at Sosora with tears pooling in the corners of them.

"...!" He didn’t know what to say.

"You have an easy time focusing on and taking responsibility for your mistakes, Malak. It’s a little cute, but it would be better for you if you did the same with your achievements as well, alright?" She said, holding back her urge to reach out and whisk away his tears.

Malak nodded quickly and wiped the tears by himself. He didn’t even know why he was crying. Had he been that worried about Sosora’s reaction? She had paid a lot of attention to the Outsider recently, after all. He knew it was nothing he needed to be worried about on a personal level.

It was just that he was worried he had ruined something Sosora worked to save, something she cared about.

The relief of doing the opposite instead hit Malak. Still, he didn’t think crying for such a trivial matter was manly.

Sosora turned around so that he wouldn’t be too embarrassed. She didn’t mind. If anything, Malak’s proneness to tears was another aspect of him she liked. He had a soft heart.

But she also knew that he had his own pride. Slowly, she continued walking toward Nick’s place, giving enough time for Malak to compose himself.

Someone like Monkey would probably notice. But someone like Monkey hopefully wouldn’t care or mention it.

The problem was that it wasn’t someone like Monkey. It was Monkey. And it was for that exact reason that Sosora slowed down even more.

Taking her time walking through the forest with Malak was cozy.

They had set out to be two of the first to arrive since Sosora was carrying important tools, and Malak was carrying important ingredients. But with the pace they were walking, it was starting to look like they would be the last to arrive.

In the moment, neither cared. Another second together was more important than arriving on time.

It still took several minutes for their fingers to weave together, though. And by the time they finally managed to look at each other again, they were only a few steps away from Nick’s clearing.

They heard the sound of conversation find its way into the trees.

They stopped dead in their tracks and pulled their hands apart, blushing like roses in bloom. They didn’t look at each other and cleared their throats awkwardly.

"Shall we...?" "I think we might be late." They spoke at the same time.

They stared at each other for a couple of seconds before laughing and entering Nick’s clearing with their bags.
