Chapter 60: Party Prep
Chapter 60: Party Prep
Nick’s words reminded Sosora to tell him about Muhso’s request to be invited the next time they gathered to make sausage. Naturally, Nick had no objections, considering Muhso’s help in getting everyone to think of him in a favorable light.
Then, there was Malak, who had also been promised an invitation. Nick decided to invite Mijko as well. Sosora didn’t know who Mijko was, but with Monkey’s help, it wasn’t an issue.
Monkey himself might be an issue, though, since it seemed like he also liked the sausage. It wasn’t unlikely that he would crash the party.
Sosora decided to warn Nick about the possibility of an important person from one of the tribes that helped them in the tribal meeting crashing the party. Nick was a little hesitant at first, but quickly decided that it didn’t matter. The more the merrier, after all.
Everyone who heard about the party and wanted to come were welcome as long as they brought something to eat or drink. Nick and Sosora weren’t sure how many they were going to get, but with everyone on their invite list, they would end up with almost ten people.
So, they had to plan for at least ten people, four of whom were from the Ursa tribe. They would need a lot of food. A single boar probably wouldn’t be enough. Just sausage would also be a little boring.
Nick had potatoes, but not enough to feed everyone. He also had pasta. He had flour but no yeast. The only thing he knew how to bake without yeast was something like tortilla bread. This wasn’t quite the opportunity for that.
If he wanted to bake something, he would have to make sourdough, which would take at least a week, most likely more. He wouldn’t make it in time for this sausage party.
Fortunately, he wasn’t the only one preparing for the sausage party.
Since Nick suggested potatoes or vegetables, it made Sosora think of Issa. She might be too shy to come to the party, but Sosora could probably get some vegetables from the Seg tribe, and some herbs to add flavor while she was at it.
They had followed Nick’s directions during the last sausage party and used his spices. But the sausages made by the Ursa tribe were made with local flavors. Sosora hadn’t gotten a taste of that sausage, but she was interested in experimenting with different seasonings that they could find in Tiabe.
Nick didn’t mind. It meant he could keep his out-of-this-world spices for himself and for future projects. He was also interested in learning more about everything that was edible in the forest since it looked like he would be staying in it for a while.
At least right now, he had no plans on going anywhere. He didn’t have the faintest idea of how he would even go about moving anywhere. He did not want to leave his house with all of its comforts and luxuries behind, nor did he want to leave the tentacle.
If it had been the first day in this new world, he would have happily given up his house if it meant escaping the monster in his basement. But right now, the tentacle monster was a source of comfort to Nick. It was the only reason he was still alive, after all.
He had also met humans and people from this world now. They did not appear to be from a modern civilization with flushing toilets, showers, and electricity.
Nick had heard enough depictions of the horror that was life during the Middle Ages. He was not interested in living them himself. Shit and piss being dumped out the windows. No water readily available meant no showers for weeks. Combined with hard labor, the smell that would build up...
Nick didn’t want to think about it anymore. Instead, he went through the list of people to invite and things they would need for the sausage party with Sosora one last time before sending her on her way.
After she left, still stroking Kai, Nick wondered to himself if he should have told her about how a member of the Phoriae tribe had paid him a visit. But he eventually decided it wasn’t a big deal. The long-haired man had said he had seen everything he needed to see anyway. Nick doubted he would see him or his wolf again.
The thought of the Phoriae tribe man’s wolf reminded Nick of the Midnight Panther. Both were big, furry, scary predators.
Now that they were finally hosting a sausage party again, maybe the Midnight Panther would return at night to clean some leftovers. Nick hoped it would. He would at least know that it was doing alright if it did.
It would be best if it could become as tame as the bear cub resting its heavy head on his lap right now. But he could sleep a little better if he knew that the Midnight Panther had survived the injuries from the Roaring Boar.
Nick then thought about the other monster kings in the center of the forest, his closest neighbors.
Supposedly, the Roaring Boar was the one with the worst temperament. But that didn’t mean the others would just sit back and relax while they caused such a commotion. He couldn’t help but worry that they would come and crash the party.
He wasn’t sure what he would do if they did. If it were just one, it might not be a problem.
Nick leaned against the tentacle massaging his shoulders.
But he had just barely managed to convince the forest’s natives that he wasn’t enough of a threat to warrant hostile actions from their side. Pulling out a tentacle monster that could easily deal with one of the monster kings wasn’t exactly the best idea.
It had managed to stay a secret this far, regarding the Roaring Boar. But if it happened again, it wouldn’t be easy to hide.
But maybe it was a good thing. If everyone knew he could handle a monster king easy-peasy, they wouldn’t want to bother him anyway. There were already those who knew about the tentacle and still chose to associate with him.
The worst that could happen would be another forest-wide ban on visiting him.
If that happened, Nick would probably be screwed.
