Chapter 106: Dawn

It had only been a few hours since the sun sank below the horizon, but it was already making a comeback for the citizens of Mischel.

The sleeping citizens on the other side of the city didn’t notice it. They would have barely seen it even if they were awake.

The ones a little closer woke up due to a rumbling sound and could glance out to see the orange light reaching into the darkness of the night, doing its best to fight off an eternal enemy. Or they could go back to sleep.

The ones close enough heard the rumbling explosion clearly enough to figure out that the flickering, unsteady orange light was no sun. The smell of smoke already reaching their noses meant that it could only mean one thing.

Fire, and a large one at that.

However, they had no idea why such a large fire had suddenly broken out on the edge of the city.

The thugs chasing after the intruders who wrecked the auction and caused a deep loss for the Syndicate didn’t know why their destination was suddenly bathed in flames.

The Free Bird Mercenaries also didn’t know why their escape route was suddenly turned into a sea of fire, by their crazy archer of a comrade at that.

"Surprise...!" Squawks said with a weak voice before coughing.

The only ones who knew why a few barrels of extremely flammable oil had been next to the city gates were Squawks and the guards running for the closest fountains and wells. There had been more guards who knew about it, but they had been standing too close to the barrels when Hugo’s arrow hit and were quickly devoured by the flames, their screams drowned out by the howls of the fire.

Although Mischel was a city far from large rivers and seas, there was a small river nearby, and occasionally, there came ships that needed maintenance and protection against pests. Mischel was also a decent trade city.

Squawks knew that there would be barrels of wood oil somewhere. He had Hugo help him look for stuff like that since he was looking for a good vantage point anyway.

As expected, he found them.

It was a protective wood oil that reinforced wood to protect it against water and wear and tear. But that wasn’t everything.

The barrels that Squawks and Hugo found were a more volatile version that also offered protection against monsters through smell. That was why it wasn’t very popular on land but popular at sea.

Squawks pretended to be someone sent by the city to paint the city gates with the wood oil.

The guards noticed the barrels and were skeptical.

That was the stinky kind of oil.

But then again, it was starting to be the period when monsters were more active. Still, they would have to double-check, so they asked Squawks to come back tomorrow.

However, they only said that after Squawks had lugged all the barrels over to the city gate, so he asked if he could let them sit there overnight. It wasn’t like anyone was going to steal them, after all. Who would want that kind of oil?

The guards were hesitant, but they sympathized with Squawks. He had struggled hard to move all of those barrels, after all. They agreed.

That was the execution and preparation for Squawks’ backup plan.

It would have been great if it hadn’t been necessary, but it wasn’t likely.

The ideal scenario would have been to buy Damas back and then take Tair from whoever purchased him, lie low during the rest of the night, and sneak out through the gates during the day.

The second-best scenario was similar, but they would scale the walls instantly instead of lying low.

They were currently in the third-best scenario where half of everything had gone to shit but it wasn’t all doomed yet. But to get out, they needed the backup plan.

Squawks basked in the glares of his subordinates.

They all had fun things to do during the day, like preparing the Sugar Dame, looking for information, or running over the rooftops. He also had to do something.

A loud bang took them out of their glare. Hugo had launched an arrow at the city gates, both to weaken the gates and wake them up.

This wasn’t the time to stay still and think about leaving Squawks, the crazy captain, behind. This was their opportunity to get out.

Needless to say, that’s just what they did. Dima and Mole carried Squawks and Tair. Damas picked up a nearby door without caring about the house attached to it, which would now be a little drafty, and charged.

They sprinted right through the flames, doing their best to ignore the heat, and Damas tackled the city gates. Weakened by Hugo’s arrow and the flames, with the hinges and bolts on the inside, one massive Damas was enough to take them through.

The only problem was the hole they left behind that would let the others pursue them into the darkness.

Some had to stay behind and help deal with the fire before it spread, but others could chase.

The intruders had crashed the auction and caused widespread chaos throughout the city.

Both the Torak Syndicate and Mischel’s corrupt guards wanted them.

Fortunately the sea of flames caused enough hesitation to give the Free Birds enough of a window to reach the waiting horse-drawn cart at the forest line outside the city.

It wouldn’t take them far, but it would get them away fast enough to make their pursuers prepare for a drawn-out chase. It would be enough time for Hugo to catch up.

"Go! Go! Go!" Dima called out to wake up the old man snoozing up front.

In the darkness and with their eyes used to the brightness of the flames, the dim lantern hanging by the old man’s side wasn’t enough for them to recognize his face. But he recognized the big lumbering giant.

"I’m sorry!"
