My Eldritch Horror Wife Followed Me To Another World -
Chapter 105: Crazy Friend
Chapter 105: Crazy Friend
The sudden and overwhelmingly destructive attack had everyone, including the Free Bird Mercenaries, stunned. One arrow. Four mangled corpses.
What.
"Is—is that an opening?" Damas asked, breaking the silence and inadvertently urging things into motion again.
"Yes, it fucking is!" Dima shouted and dove forward.
’Twin Demon Sword Style.’
Dima’s slightly curved swords turned into flashes of light in the light of lanterns and stars breaking through the darkness of night. He knocked aside the weapons of his enemies with one sword before taking off arms and heads with the other.
He killed three people before the thugs reacted and thought to counterattack. He killed two more before they finally managed to stop him. The other thugs rushed forward to catch up to Damas, who had picked up Squawks and Tair and started running.
Mole took down the last two on that side before he and Dima held up the rear to secure Lily’s and Damas’ retreat.
But they no longer had the advantage. The thugs had overcome their surprise and were coming at them in full force.
While retreating, it was difficult even for Dima and Mole to defend against almost a dozen armed thugs. There were too many and too chaotic for them to risk attacking. They could only look for the faster ones and poke the ones that stood out.
Although Damas was strong, he couldn’t outrun everyone while carrying the heavy Squawks and the worryingly light Tair. Mole and Dima couldn’t run backward faster than the thugs could run forward, either. Lily was also weak and suffering from pain and slight blood loss.
It wasn’t just a matter of running, either.
How were they supposed to get out of the city? They couldn’t climb the walls like this. The city gates would be secured beyond measure.
Mole looked up worriedly.
That arrow...
It had most likely been one of the arrows from the center of Tiabe. That was the only explanation he could think of for such a powerful strike.
But it wouldn’t have come without a cost.
Hugo was probably suffering from the rebound of using such a powerful arrow. Or maybe his bow had been unable to handle the load and snapped.
Mole wasn’t far off.
Hugo was indeed suffering, but it had nothing to do with the reasons Mole had thought of.
There were tears in his eyes as he loaded another arrow and pulled back on the string of his bow.
It was a great bow that was so sturdy and strong that even Damas could hardly pull it back.
The arrows were powerful, but they were well-made, other than the hastily attached tips and fletchings. Most of the power was contained in the arrow. As long as the bow was heavy enough, it was fine.
The rebound also wasn’t that bad since it was taken care of by the bow.
No, Hugo was crying because each arrow was worth a fortune.
He wasn’t killing the thugs with wooden sticks. He was killing them with gold bars.
How could he not cry? How could he not hesitate?
However, he couldn’t hesitate for too long. His comrades needed his help.
He let the arrow fly. It whistled softly through the air before tearing through several of the thugs who were running shoulder-to-shoulder through the narrow streets. Even the squall was enough to injure the nearby ones.
The arrow lodged itself in the ground and thrummed ominously as the thugs halted, letting the Free Birds put some distance between them.
That was enough for now.
Hugo turned to the city gates.
That was the group’s only viable escape.
The others had been busy with their own preparations or being stuck in jail, and Squawks was unconscious and unable to speak, despite being the one who had made preparations in case things went to shit.
Right now, Hugo was the only one who knew how to get the others out, and he couldn’t communicate it to the others.
"Shit, shit, shit!" Hugo cursed and hastily loaded another arrow.
They were getting too close to the city gates. Hugo understood them.
With Damas as the spearhead, and Dima and Mole carrying Squawks and Tair, they were planning to force their way through the city gates.
It was just a large set of wooden doors.
It would take a battering ram, eight people, and four hits to take it down from the outside. Mischel wasn’t a fortress, after all.
But from the inside, it wouldn’t take that much. The city gates were made to keep people and monsters outside, not inside.
It wasn’t impossible, especially if Damas exerted himself. He was a living, breathing battering ram, after all.
But if they ran over there now, they would get caught up in Squawks’ plan.
So, Hugo launched another arrow, not at the thugs pursuing his comrades, but at those very comrades. He had to stop them.
They were just around the corner from the city gates.
Hugo winced as he let it fly. They were far away. He might have mistimed it. If he shot too late, the arrow would hit one of them.
Mole felt his skin prick. He didn’t know what was going on. But his senses were screaming at him.
Before he could even think about what it could be, he reached out and grabbed Damas by the bottom of his leather chestplate. It felt like his arm was almost yanked out of its socket, and he didn’t manage to stop Damas for shit. But he did slow Damas down enough for the arrow to sail past his head instead of piercing it.
Damas froze up and slid to a halt, cold sweat soaking his back.
All of them turned to glance at the rooftop that Hugo had made his base.
Crazy fucker. What the fuck?
But before they could even ask each other what was going on, another arrow was let loose, and this one toward the city gates instead of them. It wasn’t even aimed at the guards defending the city gates.
It was aimed at a pile of three barrels stationed next to the guard station.
The power contained in the arrow and the kinetic energy that transformed into heat, thanks to the friction of impact, were enough. If it hadn’t been, the sparks from the iron arrow tip striking the stone road on the other side of the barrels were enough.
The barrels exploded in a rainshower of flames and burning splinters.
