My Eldritch Horror Wife Followed Me To Another World -
Chapter 107: Old Men
Chapter 107: Old Men
After the old man who smelled like hay explained the misunderstanding from the other day when he sold Damas to the city guards, he took the Free Bird mercenaries away from the city. And once Hugo caught up with tears in his eyes, he ferried the group to Vorad’s border before returning to Mischel.
He entered the city and left the cart and horse behind. When he turned a corner, he grabbed his face and tore it off to reveal a youthful appearance. But it wasn’t just his face that changed. His entire body shifted, and he grew slightly taller, and his skin paled.
The wrinkled elderly face in his hand slowly faded away.
He ducked into another alley and followed a winding path through the city, entering and exiting houses or even climbing over them until he arrived almost back where he started.
Not far from the city gates, where repairs were in full swing, an old man with greying hair and sharp eyes looked at the workers carrying away burned trash. The brown-haired young man who still smelled of hay walked over to him with a kind expression, like he was greeting an old friend or a friend of his grandfather’s.
Old Man Rem didn’t return the expression.
"Well, Qudo?"
"They were suspicious of me all the way to the border, even after I helped patch them and the birdie up."
"You’re saying I let them go for nothing?"
"Not at all, sir. They’re mercenaries from Syttle. Took the birdie on a very lucrative commission."
"Not tribes?"
"Nope. Fully human."
"Even the big guy?"
"Even the big guy."
"They are capable mercenaries, then. Any idea which company they belong to? And who hired them?" Rem asked, twirling an arrow in his hand.
"Sorry, sir. It sounded like that was all of them, but I didn’t catch what company they belong to or who hired them. They were wary of me." Qudo hung his head in apology.
"Because of your side-hustle?"
"That actually gave me an opening to talk to them more."
"I see," Rem said disinterestedly before handing the arrow to Qudo.
"Keep an eye out for these arrows."
QUdo accepted the arrow, confused, and looked at it.
"What’s so special about these...?" He began to ask, but his voice trailed off. Rem was already gone.
Qudo sighed. He was good at disguises thanks to his magic and training. Annoying stuff like knowing what was so special about these arrows was not his area. That meant he would have to ask the others in the Syndicate to assist him.
But Old Man Rem’s orders were orders. He was going to carry them out to the best of his abilities.

’Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!’ Malak chastised himself in his mind.
Sosora had finally climbed out of the mental escape door of slumber the other day. Her injuries had long healed, at least the ones that would heal. But her mind still wasn’t stable enough to handle her loss of vision.
Even when she woke up, Sosora had cried and refused to let go of Malak. He had to hold her and whisper soothing words until she calmed down.
It was the first time he saw her cry.
Since then, she had been sitting on her bed with a hollow expression. She wasn’t crying, eating, or sleeping. She was just existing.
Malak knew. He was by her side around the clock.
The only time she showed a reaction was when she was alone, after all. The only thing worse than the darkness was being the only one in the darkness.
Even if Malak couldn’t do anything and had no idea what it was like, just having him there helped Sosora calm the waves of her mind. Without him, she was like a tiny rowboat adrift on the ocean at night without even the starlight to guide her.
Losing her eyes hit Sosora hard.
It wasn’t an exaggeration to say that her life was over.
She might someday learn to navigate the surroundings she was familiar with, such as her room. But her home was located up in the tree. She couldn’t fly. How was she supposed to get down?
With someone’s help?
She would also need help to prepare food, find her clothes, and relieve herself until she figured out what she could do on her own.
She would need help with everything when in the past, she hadn’t needed anyone’s help.
She was never going to be a warrior. She couldn’t see her own hands. How was she supposed to see an enemy’s weapon coming for her head?
Sosora was smart enough to see how much of a burden she was.
Her body was fully functional, but if she tried to do almost anything, she would harm herself or others. The only way not to cause harm would be to do nothing. For the rest of her life.
It would be better to just fade away.
If Malak hadn’t been by her side, constantly trying to pull her out of the depths of despair, she would have already started disappearing.
But it wasn’t fair to him. Malak was good, too good to be saddled with the burden that was her.
That was why Sosora had accepted it when Malak asked her to go on a walk with him. Mijko had said that Nick wanted to see them, after all.
When they returned, Sosora was planning to break things off with Malak and set him free.
Malak’s mind, on the other hand, was obsessed with something completely different.
Sosora was suffering. Being exposed to the forest like this would only make it that much more obvious how much she had lost. The familiar trees and flowers were no different from the darkness around her.
But here he was, heartbeat in the skies since he had to hold Sosora close when guiding her.
It was Sosora’s first walk after the injury. It wasn’t quite on the level of teaching her to walk all over again. But she had lost all confidence in her steps.
If Malak didn’t hold her, she would trip on her own feet if the roots and rocks of the forest floor weren’t good enough.
When they finally arrived at Nick’s house, Malak was sweatier and more exhausted than she was.
