Chapter 104: Escape From Mischel

Chapter 104: Escape From Mischel

Sky Splitter was a move Squawks had practiced countless times. The number of times he had used it in a real situation, however, could be counted on one hand. Due to the time it took for him to prepare it and the state it left him in afterward, it wasn’t something he could use in the middle of a fight.

It was great for cutting down trees, though.

When he practiced, he did it to get the technique down pat and make sure he could do it whenever he wanted. He rarely squeezed out every last ounce of strength he had when performing it.

But he had never successfully cut through anything harder than wood, much less an iron cage.

The resistance was greater than he had expected when he first struck the cage. If not for his reliable muscles, he would have failed and caught the rebound of the power he put into the move.

Even now, the muscles he took great pride in were barely enough to drive the edge of his blade into the iron lid of the cage.

There was only one thing that kept him going without fail.

It was the thought of the money he would be swimming in when they returned home successfully.

With one last surge of effort and strength, Squawks pushed down so hard that a couple of vessels burst in his hands.

As soon as he got through the lid of the cage, his sword and the power contained within burst out and cut straight through, splitting the cage in two uneven halves. A gentle shockwave rustled Tair’s feathers, and he weakly tried to raise a hand to block.

Fortunately, Sky Splitter’s power was direct and concentrated straight forward. Tair was untouched by Squawks’ move, fortunately. Otherwise, the Free Bird Mercenaries wouldn’t have much to show their commissioners.

Squawks smiled weakly. The bent, cracked, and broken remnant of a sword dropped from his hands and clattered to the ground. He would have done the same if Dima hadn’t caught him.

"Good work, Captain."

"Mhm," Squawks responded with a grunt. That was a bad sign. He had used more strength than intended if he couldn’t even answer with more than a word.

"Let’s get out of here," Lily said. The others nodded.

Dima put Squawks on his back. Damas picked up Tair. Mole led the way.

Although the Torak Syndicate controlled most of Mischel, and they had no real reason to fear a raid by the city guards, their buildings, especially important ones like the auction hall, were built with the complete awareness that they were criminals. Naturally, there were more exits than entrances.

One of them was a tunnel leading out of the basement and into the sewers. There was also a path leading to a safe house before they reached the sewers, but the Torak Syndicate would undoubtedly have people lying in wait there.

Although not the most hygienic, the Free Bird Mercenaries had to adapt their escape to the sewer system beneath Mischel. However, the river connected to it would take them deeper into Vorad. It also didn’t help that none of them had the sewers’ layout memorized.

They would get lost if they wandered too far.

They had to get up and try to escape the city by making use of the chaos from the botched auction.

It was the right call. The only resistance they faced in the sewers was the rats trying to chase them out of their home. On the surface, there were enough people running around for the Free Bird Mercenaries to hear them underground.

However, they had to go up sooner or later, and they decided to do it when they found an exit that wasn’t surrounded. It was a tiny room in the sewer tunnels with a murky wooden ladder attached to the ground and the hole in the ceiling that took them to a hut-like structure on the side of a small house on a secluded corner.

It was an ignored part of the city, but it wasn’t far from the auction hall, unfortunately.

"Mole?" Dima asked, Squawks on his back. Mole was in charge of escape routes. Mole glanced around to orient himself and figure out where they were, but before he could answer, an arrow flew in and lodged itself in the wall not far from them. There was a note wrapped around the shaft.

"It’s from Hugo. Follow me," Mole said after reading the note. The others glanced up and around to see where Hugo was while following Mole in the direction Hugo had said. They snuck through the city and avoided people as best they could.

When they couldn’t avoid them, they beat them up and stuffed them in alleys or killed them if they were from the Syndicate.

"Hold it right there!"

However, they couldn’t get to the city wall undetected, and a large group of armed thugs suddenly surrounded them and pointed swords, daggers, and clubs at them.

Slowly, Damas and Dima put down their burdens and grabbed their weapons. Dima pulled out his two swords, and Damas grabbed the morningstar at his hip. The spiked ball dangled from the chain.

It looked small in Damas’ hands, and it was smaller than what he usually used. But since it was supposed to be a stealth mission, they couldn’t exactly bring his big weapon.

Mole also grabbed his daggers and raised his guard.

Almost a dozen people on either side of the street.

"Dima, you’re with me," Mole said. "Damas, protect those three. If you see an opening, grab them and run."

"Got it."

"Copy that."

The dark-clad thugs from the Syndicate slowly closed in.

During the hours everyone had searched for the intruders, information had spread about Kava’s defeat and the ruined iron cage. Although Kava had said there weren’t any transcendents, the facts spoke for themselves.

Regardless of their status, they were dangerous.

There was nothing wrong with being cautious and ganging up on them with numbers.

However, there was one thing they hadn’t accounted for. Support.

Before either side could attack, an arrow tore through the air like divine judgment and burst through four thugs, leaving gaping holes in them, on one side before piercing the ground, where it quivered like a spring.
