Chapter 97: Strange noises

It’s been a year since I’ve been taking care of the mistress. She’s still pretty much the same as always she’s always reading books or drawing strange symbols, but as she’s been getting frustrated more often, she’s reduced the frequency of drawing and sometimes just stares at the sky, murmuring strange things.

My work at the mansion has become relatively easier, as I’ve finished cleaning the severe dirt, so now it’s just the everyday mess. The furniture has mostly been replaced, and now the mansion is in great shape.

Though only on the inside, as the outside still looks bad, that’s something I think I can fix over time. We’re improving quite a bit, and I’ve even managed to get the mistress to open up a little.

She told me her name, which took about 6 months to happen officially. It may seem like slow progress, but it was progress nonetheless.

I’ve also gotten better at the recipes, though there were many attempts and failures, I’ve learned to cook a few more things, and I’ve also become better at understanding the mistress she seems desperate for something.

It’s a bit sad, and I hope with all my heart that she achieves her goal and is happy and satisfied with her accomplishment.

I’ve also seen her writing letters with her own blood quite frequently, but she noticed me and sent me away, saying that observing others in secret is wrong. After that, she didn’t speak to me for a few days.

So I decided I wouldn’t observe her anymore if I saw her doing something in secret. I only have 2 years left to gain her trust, or I’ll be kicked out, though I fear being kicked out has taken a backseat.

I want to help the mistress. She’s captivating, and her loneliness makes me want to help her deal with the problems she hides so deeply. I may be young, but I’m smart and understand a bit about some things.

Unfortunately, at the moment, all I can do to help her is cook, so I need to improve even more in the kitchen to make incredible recipes for her.

Now, every time I cook the food, I add a little of my own blood. Of course, in the beginning, I was putting too much and got a bit sick, so I realized there’s a limit to what I can put in the food. So I’ve been testing until I found an amount that wouldn’t be a problem to lose every day and that the mistress would still want to eat since when the food had little, she’d just take a spoonful, spit it out, and ignore the plate.

Honestly, every little thing connects the mistress to a vampire, but the inconsistencies set her apart from being a vampire, so without proof, it’s hard to say. And if she really is a vampire, why doesn’t she kill me?

I don’t know, so I’m just leaving everything as it is. As long as she’s good, I’ll trust her. I’d rather ignore the signs and see the mistress as a lonely, sick girl than a vampire with obscure motives.

And whether she’s a vampire or not, it really doesn’t matter. She helped me, and when I got sick, I saw that she came to take care of me in secret at night, thinking I was asleep, even though she denies any involvement if I ask.

She is kind, but she doesn’t know how to demonstrate or talk about her kindness. Sometimes the conditions of a person force them to act in a way they don’t want, changing who they are.

If I hadn’t found the mistress but had still survived, would I still be the way I am now? Or would I have changed? I have no way of knowing, but I like to think that finding the mistress was the best thing.

Today, I’m cooking fried fish with a sauce made with a bit of my blood. If I don’t season it well, she ends up throwing part of the food away, so this sauce was one of the best options I came up with.

I add this sauce to almost all the food I make, as unlike stews, the food usually has a limit to how much the blood can spread when applied in small quantities.

With this sauce, I can achieve a flavor that the mistress will eat without throwing away, so now I always make several jars of this sauce, they don’t use large amounts of blood, plus they last, so they’re a good option.

I start to take the plate to the mistress, walking through the mansion, which is in a very good state after all my work. I feel a certain pride in my efforts to make this happen.

Arriving at the mistress’s room, I hear strange noises inside, so I just sit on the floor, place the tray on my lap, and wait.

She’s already told me not to bother her in case of noise. Although the frequency of these noises is strange, it seems to have increased, and now there are noises in her room almost every night, and some even sound like noises of pain? I can’t say for sure, but I know that if I try to go see her, I’ll have serious problems.

She never changes her decisions, as I’ve noticed in this past year, so she ends up firmly following her choices. Maybe because she’s so cold, she can think things through and maintain her opinion. Overall, she’s stubborn, but I think that gives her a certain charm. I say that because when I improved in cooking and presented a dish to her, she was all excited, and she tried it and gave a slight smile.

It wasn’t much, and it was very brief, but it was the first change in expression I’ve seen in her. Her face is always set in a neutral expression, and she never expresses many things. I think her gaze expresses a lot more than her face. You can see many emotions in her eyes. I don’t know if it’s because she tries to hide her feelings or something else.

But it’s clear to me that her mind is a whirlwind of emotions and ideas. I wonder what she’s been through to be this way, but if I asked, my answer would be a cold one, denying it and saying that too much curiosity is bad.

The noises inside the room have decreased, so I stand up with the tray in my hands and knock on the door. After a few moments, she speaks to me.

"You can come in..." She always gives short responses, but before, her responses were even shorter and colder. In comparison, her current responses are less cold, showing that she and I are getting closer.

I open the door and enter, quickly glancing around the room before turning my attention back to her.

’...Another mark...’ She has a bite mark on her neck, but it is so brief that it’s already gone. Initially, when I saw it, I thought I was hallucinating. After all, there was nothing afterward, but I’ve seen it much more than once.

It occurs mainly when there are strange noises in her room, and I arrive too early, and she ends up not having time to grab a book and lie on the bed or sit in the chair.

I wonder if she has some sort of agreement with the vampires, and in exchange for her blood, they don’t attack the mansion, but that can’t be it because her wound heals too quickly. Another sign that she’s not human, but I ignore it with all my might. I didn’t see anything, and nothing happened.

She’s just my slightly strange but kind mistress. It was just an illusion of my mind, focused too much on vampires and the like.

"Mistress, we’ll have grilled fish today," I say as I hand her the tray. I notice a subtle smile on her face.

’Is she...happy? But...why?’ One of her rare moments of smiling, but this time it wasn’t because of me.

"Mistress, you seem happy..."

"...Maybe...it’s just that my letters have been answered, and I’ve managed to get a good deal after trying for so long."

"Does it have to do with your dream?" I ask curiously. Well, if she’s happy, I’m happy.

"Yes...my dream, it’s all related to it, and if it works out, I’ll have time to achieve the biggest dream I have."

’So being immortal isn’t her dream...I wonder if I can help her with her dream?’

"Yuki, would you like to eat with me today?" She asks me as she takes the tray. I’m surprised, as in all this time, she’s never invited me to eat with her.

"Yes, mistress, I’d love to," I agree enthusiastically. Her happiness makes me happy, precisely because it’s rare to see her happy, and if her being happy makes her open up more, then may she be even happier.

And may I be able to help her achieve that happiness?

"Mistress, shall I get something for me to eat as well?"

"No need, we’ll share the fish. I won’t eat it all," she says as she sits on the bed.

"Alright, mistress..."

’I wonder...who are the letters written in blood for...’ If the letters have been answered and she’s managed to make a deal, it means that all the times there are noises in this room are because of these letters.

But this opens a question that infiltrates my mind. If she always writes with blood, then it could be written for a vampire, which would also explain the bite mark.

It’s been about 5 months since she’s been trying to negotiate with this vampire, and she’s finally succeeded.

’No, forget it...don’t think too much about it...it doesn’t matter, she’ll stay the same...’ I tell myself as I ask if I can sit on the bed with her. She nods while picking up the utensil.

There are several reserved utensils, so I grab the reserved one to eat with her, setting aside vampires, deals, and letters.

None of that matters. All that matters right now is enjoying the meal with my mistress. Tasting the fish, I feel the delicious flavor. I’ve really improved a lot in the kitchen.
