Chapter 96: She needs iron

After that day, I started cooking for the mistress. She would always taste my food, then spit it out and not eat anymore. I didn’t understand why every time I made something, she would just take a spoonful and throw the rest away.

I even felt a bit bad when she would put the spoon in her mouth, chew, and then just spit it out and ignore the plate. I thought the flavor must have been horrible, but then I’d try it myself and it was actually pretty good, so I didn’t understand why she would always throw it away.

She ate the first stew I made for her without any issues. However, after about 2 weeks, while making another meal, I ended up hurting myself, but since the mistress said it was no problem, I served the food that way and she ate it.

So it became clear to me that she always eats my food when there is blood in it beforehand. I wonder why it made me question if she is a vampire.

But she doesn’t seem like a vampire, and if she were one, she would have already sucked my blood. So I spent the whole day thinking about why, and then I remembered that mom said blood needs iron, and that there is iron in blood.

And there are certain foods that have this iron, so I end up thinking that maybe the mistress has some kind of illness and that’s why she’s so pale, and she needs a lot of iron in her food, which is why she eats the food that has my blood in it.

Because that way, she can get the iron she needs. So I started making all the food with a little of my blood in it, and she started eating it, which only strengthened my theory.

And it made her seem even kinder, even if she doesn’t want to eat, she always tries what I make for her, so it’s just kindness. She also started drawing.

Whether it’s on canvases, on the floor, or even on the walls, they’re always strange symbols, and sometimes she gets irritated or frustrated with the drawings. Maybe she’s bored and decided to try art.

But when she’s angry, it’s scary, so I avoid getting close. I’ve also heard her breaking things out of frustration, and when that happened, I stayed away, but she would calm down soon after.

Although she never puts down the books, I wish I could read to know what’s so interesting in the books and symbols that she sees, but I shouldn’t be too curious.

So I spent a lot of time cleaning and organizing the mansion. There’s still a lot to clean, and there are also many broken things that I need to remove or try to fix.

Fortunately, the dead bodies are gone I think the mistress was kind enough to remove them. They were a bit scary, and I was very afraid of going out at night and finding one of the bodies on the floor.

My imagination played a lot of strange tricks on me about that, but thankfully, everything is gradually getting organized, and the mistress, although she still doesn’t talk much and is cold, is relatively taking care of me.

I’ve also noticed that she drinks a lot of wine, but I’ve never seen her drunk. All those empty red bottles have been discarded outside the mansion. I wonder how much she likes wine could wine have iron?

I don’t know, and I think it’s better not to ask her about it. She might think I’m stupid for not having the education of a noble like her.

Overall, life is good, although I’m very sad about my late family. Now that I’ve had time to rest and take care of my life, the sadness has hit me.

But I’ve tried to set that aside to take care of the mistress. She’s apparently always been alone, from what I can tell from the mansion, and yet I don’t see her complaining or crying.

So I motivate myself to move forward. After finishing cleaning a few more rooms in the mansion, I’ll go to the kitchen and prepare something for the mistress. I make a stew.

I know repeating the recipe might be boring for the mistress, but I don’t know how to cook many things, so I end up just repeating what I know how to make and accidentally spilling a bit of my blood into the food.

I carefully carry the stew to the mistress’s room, where she is at the moment. Arriving at the door, I take a deep breath and make sure I’m well-groomed, confirming that I’m not dirty with spider webs, and then I prepare myself.

"Mistress, may I enter?" The door is closed, so I ask if I can come in, as she has already complained about me opening doors before, and also said I shouldn’t enter her room without permission.

"..." It’s silent, but I hear movement sounds, so she’s probably drawing again. I don’t want to disturb her, so I just sit on the floor with the tray on my lap.

"..." I start thinking about the past week. The mistress seems to not want to get too close to me, avoids talking much, and is always reading a different book, never the same one.

Sometimes she also disappears at night. I was afraid on some nights and tried to go to her room, but it was empty with the window open. I was fearful that a vampire had appeared and went to sleep.

But the next day, she was here, and everything was normal, so I ended up dismissing it as paranoia, even though she has disappeared on other nights. The mistress is a strange person.

"..." I uncover the food and look at it. It’s not ugly, but it’s not beautiful either it’s just a regular stew, so it’s not something grand to share with my mistress.

’I wish I knew how to cook more things... I wonder if I could ask the mistress to teach me to read... I’ll try it, she’s kind, maybe she’ll teach me, and then I can look at a cookbook.’

After waiting for almost 30 minutes, the sounds in the room decreased. I knock on the door, asking if I can enter, and the mistress says yes.

I enter the room, and what I see is a strange drawing made on a piece of paper stuck to the wall. Not just one, but several separate papers forming smaller drawings that connect into larger ones.

’Is the mistress crazy?’ I question, looking at the papers on the wall. I look at the mistress, who is on the bed reading another book. The deliveries at night have also continued.

I even tried to see who was delivering, but I couldn’t, because I’d end up falling asleep before, and when I woke up, the things were already there.

Most of them are household items, supplies, and many books. It seems the mistress is much richer and more influential than I thought.

’No, the mistress is not crazy, she must just be lonely... Loneliness must be very hard for her, being young and ill.’ This is sad. I wonder why she doesn’t have anyone to take care of her.

"Mistress, here is the stew." I had the stew to her. She sniffs the air, sensing the aroma of the stew, which is only lukewarm, as it’s been out of the fire for a while.

"You shouldn’t keep injuring yourself to add blood to the food." She says as she takes the stew and takes a taste.

"It’s okay, mistress! I’m strong, I can give you some iron." I say, explaining the reason I discovered why she eats the food with my blood.

"...Give me...iron?" She questions, looking at me as if I’m strange.

"Yes, well, you don’t seem very healthy... And everything I served that had a little of my blood, you would taste. So I think it’s because you need iron... Am I wrong?"

She thinks for a moment while taking another spoonful of the stew. She sighs and responds to me.

"No... you’re not wrong, I just need a bit of iron... But stop cooking stew, the vegetables are not what I need. Preferably, make something with meat."

"Mistress, what are these symbols?" I ask, changing the subject. I barely know how to make a stew, there’s no way I can change the recipe.

"They are... something I’m studying. You don’t need to know. Too much curiosity is bad."

"Mistress, could you teach me to read? I can help you!" I say, trying to be helpful. I’m sure I can assist her if I know how to read.

"Do you want to be my apprentice, is that it?" She ponders the choice for a moment.

"Yes, I want to be your apprentice!"

"...If... in 3 years, you manage to earn a bit of my trust, I’ll teach you to read." She says, then starts ignoring me, but I accept the challenge.

"And... if 3 years pass and you don’t trust me?" I question, not knowing what she’ll do. If in 3 years I’ve earned her trust, I’ll be her apprentice, but what happens if I don’t have a bit of her trust.

"I’ll expel you." She says coldly, without any doubt or hesitation.

"I-I swear I’ll succeed! I’ll do everything, I’ll clean the mansion, I’ll learn to fix things, and I’ll make delicious food! I’ll make you trust me!"

"..."

She just ignores me and picks up another book to read. When she does that, I know she won’t pay attention to me anymore. I don’t know why she’s so obsessed with reading and these strange symbols.

But I’ll respect her decisions because if it wasn’t for her, I would have died outside this mansion. I was very lucky to have escaped and ended up in this mansion.

’The mistress needs help, so I’ll be her right-hand man!’ I think as I leave the room. I need to go back to cleaning things, I’ll prove to her that I’m reliable.
