Chapter 21: A Slap For A Prove
Lunara’s smirk didn’t waver, but her grip on her sleeve tightened. "Your mother?" she echoed, tilting her head slightly. "If you’re going to accuse me again, then I want to leave right this moment. Because no... I don’t have any relationship with your mother."
Eryx crossed his arms, raising an eyebrow with a mocking smirk. "No connection with my mother, yet she chose you as her daughter-in-law?"
Lunara’s eyes widened at his words. "What do you mean?"
Eryx scoffed. "Don’t play dumb. You and my mother planned this all along... That night. She sent you to my room, didn’t she?"
"I really don’t have time for this. I already told you, I have nothing to do with your mother. And that night—" she gulped, her voice unsteady before she continued, "I... I was drugged by someone. I don’t want to talk about it because it’s something shameful for me. So if you could at least respect that and let me leave, please."
He frowned. "Who? Your father?"
Lunara looked at him, her irritation growing. "It looks like you know everything, sir." Her voice was laced with sarcasm as her eyes narrowed. "Yes, the man who was supposed to be my father sold me just to settle his debt. Satisfied? Now, can I leave?"
"But you’re not listed as his daughter..." His low voice carried a hint of curiosity.
She sighed, rubbing her temple. "I believe my family matters are none of your concern."
Eryx studied her, his jaw tightening. "You expect me to believe that my mother chose you out of nowhere? That all of this is just some coincidence?"
Lunara met his gaze, her expression unreadable. "Believe what you want, Mr. Grantham. But I have no reason to lie."
His fingers tapped against his knee as he exhaled sharply. "Then answer me this... why does your face feel so damn familiar?"
"How the hell do I know?!" Her voice raised out of frustration. She then turned and held the door handle ready to run out before Eryx grabbed her by waist and pulled her closer.
"I am not done yet." He locked his eyes with Lunara who was startled by the sudden pull.
Lunara’s breath hitched as she found herself pressed close against him, her hands instinctively pushing against his chest. "Let me go," she demanded, her voice quieter this time, though the frustration still lingered in her tone.
Eryx didn’t budge. His grip remained firm, his eyes narrowing as he studied her face. "Why are you running away?"
"Because I have no reason to stay," she shot back, tilting her chin up defiantly.
His lips curled into a smirk, but there was no humor in his eyes. "Then why do you look like you’re hiding something?"
Lunara snickered, "Tell me the truth Mr. Grantham. Are you actually interested in me?"
Eryx’s smirk was sharp, but his grip on her waist stayed firm. "Interested?" His voice dipped lower, as if the thought amused him. "You give yourself too much credit."
Lunara let out a short laugh, her fingers curling against his chest before pushing lightly. "Then let me go, Mr. Grantham. Unless you’re afraid I’ll vanish before you figure me out."
His eyes darkened. "I don’t chase after people."
She tilted her head, lips curling in challenge. "No? Then why are you still holding me?"
His gaze dipped to her lips, lingering there for a beat too long. The air between them grew thick, heavy with something unspoken.
Lunara shifted slightly, trying to ease the tension, but his presence was suffocating. "If this is some power play, Mr. Grantham, I quit, I will never win."
Eryx’s jaw tick. "Then stop looking at me like that."
Her brows furrowed. "Like what?"
"Like you’ve seen me before."
Lunara’s breath hitched, her heart slamming against her ribs. For a moment, she forgot to cover her expression, and that was all it took.
Eryx saw it.
His hand didn’t move, but his presence loomed over her, his voice quieter now. "You know me." It wasn’t a question.
Lunara swallowed hard, her pulse roaring in her ears. She should deny it. Laugh it off. But her voice wouldn’t come.
"Now... tell me the truth..."
The hand that had been wrapped around her waist slid upward, just beneath her arm, before pulling her in too close. In one swift motion, Lunara found herself on his lap, her breath hitching as her hands instinctively pressed against his chest.
Her body tensed, heat rising to her cheeks, but she refused to let him see how much he rattled her. "What the hell are you doing?" she hissed, trying to push away.
Eryx didn’t budge. His grip was firm but not forceful, his gaze locked onto hers, unreadable. "You’re running," he murmured, his lips dangerously close to her ear. "And I don’t like it."
Lunara let out a shaky breath, willing her pulse to slow. "I’m not running. I just don’t like being manhandled like this," she snapped, squirming in his hold.
"Then, why don’t you just tell me the whole truth and I will let you go. As easy as that, right?" He tried hard to hold his smile although a tip of his lips curved slightly. It seemed like he was enjoying looking at her face and loving the distance.
Lunara huffed, her glare sharp. "I can sit just fine on the seat, Mr. Grantham, with due respect!"
Eryx smirked, tilting his head. "With due respect?" His fingers brushed against her waist before finally letting go, but his eyes remained locked on hers. "You’re the one sitting on my lap, Lunara. Respect flew out the window the moment that happened."
She clenched her jaw, heat crawling up her skin. "Excuse me?" she scoffed. "You pulled me here."
He raised a brow. "And yet, you didn’t resist enough."
Her breath hitched. "Should I slap you to prove I’m resisting enough?"
His lips curled slightly, amused. "You could try."
Lunara’s fingers twitched, tempted. But she knew better. Instead, she tried to pull away again and sighed. "Mr. Grantham, this is improper. Let me go."
"Not yet." His voice was smooth, controlled. "Not until I figure out why I can’t get you out of my head."
Eryx leaned in, his gaze locked onto hers, so close she could feel his breath. For a second, she thought he might kiss her but his eyes weren’t on her lips. He was searching for something, something that unsettled him.
Lunara’s heart pounded. She should push him away. Say something. Do something. But his nearness sent her thoughts into chaos.
Then, just as suddenly, a slap landed on his cheek.
Her palm met his cheek, sharp and decisive.
Silence.
Eryx blinked, his head tilting slightly from the impact. Then, a slow smirk tugged at his lips.
Lunara’s breathing was uneven, her hand still tingling. "Now will you let me go?"
