Chapter 129: Don’t Do This Again

Eryx moved, trying to sit up, but the moment he lifted his head, a sharp, blinding pain shot through his skull. He hissed under his breath and dropped back onto the pillow with a low groan.

Lunara’s anger crumbled the second she saw him wince.

"Don’t move!" she cried, rushing to his side. Her hands hovered uselessly above him, not knowing where it hurt most.

He squeezed his eyes shut, waiting for the worst of the pain to pass. "I’m fine," he muttered, but the tightness in his voice gave him away.

"You’re not fine, you idiot," Lunara muttered under her breath, her voice shaking. She scrubbed at her eyes quickly, trying to hide the tears.

And everyone in the room froze.

Eryx, the man who always had the last word, always held the power, was now lying helplessly on the bed, flinching under his wife’s glare.

For once, he had no sharp comeback, no calm excuse.

Just a guilty wince as Lunara called him an idiot to his face.

It would’ve been funny if it wasn’t so heartbreaking.

Lunara huffed, wiping the corner of her eye roughly with her sleeve.

"You’re unbelievable," she muttered, glaring at him like he’d personally set the hospital on fire.

Eryx tried to look apologetic but it ended up looking more like he was caught stealing cookies.

He opened his mouth to say something but all that came out was a soft groan as he shifted wrong and his head throbbed again.

Lunara immediately panicked, grabbing his arm. "Stop moving! You want to faint again?!"

"I’m not fainting," he mumbled, his face scrunched up in pain. "I’m just... adjusting."

"No! Just don’t move." She unconsciously slapped his chest in her frantic attempt to stop him from shifting, and Eryx let out a painful groan.

Panic set in for Lunara as she quickly waved her hand, her voice full of regret. "Sorry, sorry. Did I hurt you?" Her eyes flicked to the doctor. "Doctor—"

But before she could finish, Eryx gently held her hand, stopping her from going into full panic mode.

"I’m fine," he whispered, his voice raspy but calm. "Just... a little sore."

The doctor, seeing that things were under control, gave a small nod. "I’ll be back in a while to check on him. He’s stable for now, so just let him rest."

Lunara nodded, but her gaze lingered on Eryx, not fully convinced. Still, she let the doctor leave, her grip on his hand firm but gentle. After a moment, the rest of the room cleared out. Callum, ever the professional, slipped out quietly, followed by Regina, who gave them both one last glance before closing the door.

The room fell silent, save for the soft beeping of machines. Lunara sank into the chair next to Eryx’s bed, her fingers still intertwined with his. She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself.

Eryx shifted again, though more carefully this time, and gave her a tired smile. "Did I scare you a lot?" He gently rubbed her hand.

Hearing the question, the sadness that Lunara had barely contained surged once again. She pouted, holding on to the tiny bit of control to stop herself from breaking down. "Hmm." She nodded, shifting her eyes away, trying to keep her composure.

"I’m sorry," Eryx murmured, his voice low and regretful.

Lunara exhaled sharply, her lips pressing into a thin line. She looked back at him, her eyes softening, but her frustration still lingered. "What was happening?" Her voice cracked slightly, and she quickly swallowed the emotion that threatened to spill out. "Who did this? Callum didn’t want to tell me anything." Her pout deepened as she stared at him, clearly still upset.

Eryx’s gaze flickered away for a moment, his fingers tightening around hers. He wasn’t sure how to explain everything, especially not without worrying her more. "It’s... nothing," he murmured, then smiled again, trying to shift the question. "Did you come from home?"

Lunara instantly narrowed her eyes, her brows knitting together in suspicion. "Nothing? Who did this?" Her voice dropped, tension building in her words. "Is it related to me that you decided to keep it a secret?" She guessed, her tone sharper now.

Eryx tensed slightly, caught off guard by the directness of her question. He opened his mouth to say something, but the words caught in his throat. He wanted to be honest, but at the same time, he didn’t want to add to her worries.

Lunara’s eyes bore into him, waiting for an answer, and the weight of silence hung between them. "I’m not stupid, Eryx. I know something’s going on," she said, her voice softer now but no less determined. "So don’t lie to me."

He slowly pulled his hand back, scratching his eyebrow, though it wasn’t even itching. "It’s really nothing. Someone, probably just someone who decided to give me a little payback," he muttered, his tone casual, though his face remained unreadable. "So nope, don’t worry. It’s nothing related to you." He tried to maintain the same calm expression, hoping his lies wouldn’t be caught.

Lunara studied him for a long moment, her brow furrowing as if trying to decipher the truth behind his words. She wasn’t convinced, but the exhaustion in his voice made her hesitate.

"That’s why... you shouldn’t make an enemy," she said, frustration lacing her tone. Without thinking, she slapped his chest again, her hand landing with a soft thud. The moment she did, she heard him groan in pain, and her eyes widened in panic.

"A–ah! I’m sorry!" She quickly withdrew her hand, flustered, her face flushing with embarrassment.

Eryx, still wincing from the impact, couldn’t help but chuckle softly. Despite the pain, his lips curled into a small, amused smile. "I’m starting to think I might need a padded suit just to survive your visits."

Lunara huffed, her lips trembling between frustration and relief. "Nope, maybe you need a full suit of armor at this rate," she muttered, though a tiny laugh escaped her as well.

"I will ask Callum to order it now," Eryx teased, still fighting through the pain in his head, but the lightness in his tone made it clear he wasn’t completely serious.

She shook her head but squeezed his hand gently. "Please, don’t do this again."

At that moment, their eyes met and Eryx gently pulled her onto his chest, enveloping her in a warm embrace. "I won’t."
