My Cold-Hearted Husband Wants Me Back -
Chapter 128: M.I.A
Chapter 128: M.I.A
"Sir."
"Sir."
The voice sounded distant at first, like an echo underwater.
Eryx forced his heavy eyelids open, the blurry ceiling above him slowly coming into focus. A familiar face leaned over him, Callum, looking tense and pale.
"Sir, don’t move," Callum said urgently, one hand pressing gently against Eryx’s shoulder to keep him down. "An ambulance is on its way."
Eryx tried to lift his head but the pounding in his skull was brutal. Gritting his teeth, he managed to whisper, "Don’t tell Lunara. Or my family..."
Callum’s eyes flickered with worry, but he gave a quick nod. "Understood, sir. Just hang on."
A faint smirk tugged at Eryx’s lips, but before he could say anything more, the darkness pulled him under again.
He had been unconscious for two days now, and for Lunara and his family, he was missing.
Callum did his best to cover for him, answering calls and sending messages from Eryx’s phone, making excuses that he was away on sudden business.
But it didn’t fool everyone.
Especially not Lunara.
Or Regina.
By the second day, Lunara was already restless, pacing back and forth in the mansion.
"He’s not answering," she said, her voice tight with worry.
Regina, sitting on the edge of the sofa, gave her a look just as sharp. "And when was the last time Eryx ever went anywhere without telling us?"
Callum, standing stiffly in front of them, kept his face carefully blank.
"I’m sure Mr. Grantham is just busy. He’ll reach out soon," he said smoothly, trying his best to keep his breath steady.
Lunara narrowed her eyes, unconvinced.
"Callum," Regina’s voice cut in, cold and low. "You’re lying."
Callum stiffened, the muscles in his jaw twitching. He opened his mouth, then closed it again, clearly at war with himself.
Lunara grabbed her phone. "I’m going to find him myself if you don’t tell me where he is."
Before Callum could stop her, Regina stood, her face pale but her voice firm.
"When I called you here this morning, all I knew was... you were going to take us to him," she said sharply.
Cornered, Callum blinked hard. "But Madam, Mr. Grantham is on a business trip," he insisted, still clinging to the story Eryx had ordered him to maintain.
Regina narrowed her eyes. "Do you take me as a fool right now? Where? I asked you earlier, where exactly is he? You didn’t give me an answer, Callum! I don’t care what he told you. Bring us to him. Right now."
Silence stretched heavy between them.
Callum exhaled slowly, his shoulders sagging in defeat. He checked his watch, calculating the best way to handle the fallout.
Finally, he said in a low voice, "Get in the car, Madam. Young Madam. I’ll take you to him."
Without waiting for another word, Regina grabbed her coat. Lunara followed close behind, her heart pounding in her chest, dread curling in her stomach.
Neither of them spoke as they headed out.
====
When they finally reached the private hospital wing, Callum led them down a quiet hallway. Every step Lunara took felt heavier than the last, her chest tight, her palms clammy.
When Callum stopped in front of a room, he hesitated, "Here is Mr. Grantham’s room, Madam." He slowly slid open the door but Lunara couldn’t wait. She rushed past him.
Her breath caught in her throat the moment she saw him.
Eryx lay on the hospital bed, his head wrapped in white bandages. The blanket was pulled neatly up to his neck, making him look terribly still.
There were no breathing tubes, no oxygen mask only the soft, steady beep of the heart monitor beside him.
But Lunara didn’t notice that right away.
A choked sound escaped her lips. Her legs buckled as she stumbled forward, catching herself at the edge of the bed. Her fingers gripped the side rail tightly, knuckles turning white.
Regina followed behind, face pale and stricken.
Both women turned toward Callum almost simultaneously, panic flashing in their eyes.
"Callum," Regina demanded, her voice trembling, "Is he—"
"No!" Callum said quickly. "No, madam, he’s alive! Look... his heartbeat is steady!"
He pointed at the beeping monitor, but even as he said it, doubt crept into his voice.
Because something isn’t adding up.
Just last night, the doctor had told him that Eryx was stable, that he could regain consciousness any time soon.
And yet here he was, lying so unnaturally still, looking even paler under the hospital lights.
Panic flickered across Callum’s face.
"I—I’ll call the doctor!" he blurted, already half out the door before Lunara or Regina could say another word.
He practically ran down the hallway, fumbling for his phone, trying not to think about the worst.
Inside the room, Lunara kept holding Eryx’s arm tightly, whispering his name.
"Please...please wake up..." she murmured, her voice cracking.
Regina stood stiffly at the foot of the bed, arms crossed, her expression tight and unreadable, but her eyes betrayed a deep worry.
Under the blanket, Eryx tried not to breathe too hard.
He hadn’t meant to scare them this badly.
But now he had no idea how to undo it without looking like an even bigger idiot.
His fingers twitched slightly at Lunara’s touch, but she was too lost in her own emotions to notice.
The door burst open again as Callum rushed in with a doctor and two nurses following behind him.
The doctor moved quickly, checking the monitor, shining a small light into Eryx’s closed eyes.
Everything looked normal. Same condition like he checked him earlier.
"Sir?" the doctor said softly, tapping Eryx’s cheek. "Mr. Grantham, can you hear me?"
Eryx stayed still for exactly three seconds more before he couldn’t take it anymore.
With a low, guilty groan, he slowly peeled his eyes open.
The room froze.
Callum’s mouth fell open. The nurses exchanged confused glances.
Regina looked like she was ready to faint.
And Lunara, she took one trembling step back. Her wide eyes filled with a mix of shock, disbelief, and something else much sharper.
"You—" Her voice broke off.
Eryx winced. "I... I can explain..." he croaked, his voice rough.
But it was too late.
Lunara’s face crumpled, tears spilling silently down her cheeks as she shook her head.
"You think this is funny?" she whispered, her voice hoarse. "How can you joke about something like this?!"
