Chapter 47: Help me

((Flashback. Before the explosion.)

Eri remained close to the wall, her forehead resting on her knees.

Rashin knelt in front of her, a confused look on his face.

Seriphina had just admitted to having a Hakia inside of her and had told them to leave.

But none of that seemed to matter in that moment.

"What do you mean she’s in pain?" Rashin asked.

Eri was quiet for a while, then she replied,

"My Divine Blessing allows me to negate curses and whatnot. That was how I was able to see the Hakia’s memories—memories I don’t even think it knows it has."

Rashin had a serious look on his face.

"What I saw..." Eri looked directly at Rashin. "I think the Hakia is a reincarnation of someone—a woman."

"What?"

Eri remembered.

The scene played in her head over and over again.

There, hiding in a dark alley, was a girl, and beside her was a boy.

She looked to be in her teens with white long hair and lashes, while the boy was only just a child, eight years old at most.

The world was being destroyed by strange creatures, killing anything and everything they ran into.

Knowing this, the young girl took her brother and hid somewhere she could easily protect him.

The girl held a knife—a small weapon she had used to protect both herself and her brother.

She stabbed, cut, and even sliced, yet nothing could kill those monsters.

Desperate to save her brother, she hid—hid from everything around her, including the screams of the people dying close to her.

"Big Sis will protect you, don’t worry, okay? Big Sis will protect you," she said repeatedly, trembling in fear herself.

Alas, there was only so much she could do. Time didn’t seem to be on her side as the monsters began to crawl toward her direction.

She fought and fought until, eventually, she could no longer fight anymore.

The girl had lost an eye and a leg from battling the strange creatures roaming her world.

Her brother, who had managed to rescue her and run away, tried everything in his power to keep her alive.

He failed.

"You have to survive... okay, ****? Y... you have to survive."

Those were the last words of the girl before she died.

Unbeknownst to her, she would be reborn in the world of the Hakia.

She was given the name Yuki Ka-death.

Born with special blood, she was one of the few Hakia able to develop a human form from birth. Hence, she was automatically stronger than the masses.

She had no memories of her former life. All she knew was an environment where hate and destruction were all they knew.

The Hakia were all locked out of the world and existed in an outside plane of existence. Only a select few were allowed to enter existence when a small crack in the barrier appeared every once in a while.

Yuki never felt at home with the Hakia. She could not understand why, but it felt like something was missing in her life—something she was more than willing to die for.

Finally, when the day came for her to slip through the crack in the barrier, she and the only friend she had ever made, Echidna, entered the human realm.

For the brief moment the barrier was still open, all Hakia could freely do as they pleased in the human realm without dying from the angels’ blessing.

The only way they were going to survive afterward was to deceive the angels’ blessing by stealing the bodies of the humans living in the world.

Before the barrier closed off and sucked out the Hakia that had slipped through, Echidna stole the body of a girl who was the daughter of a noble, and Yuki took the body of a dying woman.

Once a Hakia takes over a human body, the body forever loses the ability to age.

Yuki did not want to kill anyone; thus, she took the body of someone who was already dying.

Awakening as a human, she realized something she had long forgotten.

There was a boy...

There was a boy she yearned for.

A boy she wanted by her side at all times.

She couldn’t remember.

Why couldn’t she remember? Her tears should already be enough.

For years, Yuki searched for this person, with no memory of what he looked like or who he was supposed to be.

She ran into other Hakia who were part of the Pillars, and soon, she was chosen to be a lab rat for Ninth, who was developing a way to help Hakia survive in the human world without having to take the form of humans themselves.

Injecting the virus into Yuki’s body placed her in a near-death situation. She was dying from the toxin spreading through her body.

She tried to run away—she didn’t want to die without meeting that person.

Alas, she could not survive, not until she came in contact with Seriphina.

These memories turned into words as Eri relayed every single one to Rashin.

He was shocked.

’Does that mean there’s a chance Hakia are people who have reincarnated?’ he thought to himself, his entire belief crumbling in front of him.

Eri uttered calmly, "Rashin..." She blinked. "I don’t know what to think anymore. I’m confused. She’s definitely a Hakia—I know that much. But still, I think everyone deserves a chance to be understood, including a fallen one."

Those words stuck with Rashin—the same words his sister had once told him when he was little.

(Flashback ends.)

And there Rashin was, his hand stretched toward Yuki as he yelled,

"Are you willing to give me that chance, Yuki?!"

The darkness around them cracked, Yuki’s eyes bubbling as if on the verge of tears.

"Just now, you called me irritating!"

"I know."

"You said Hakias are disgusting and hard to look at."

"I did say that."

"Then why are you trying to act like you give a damn about me?! Huh?! I am a Hakia! The sight of me should make you want to puke, right? You can go ahead and say it to my face!" Yuki yelled.

Rashin was quiet, his hand still stretched before him.

Yuki suddenly gave a fake smile. "Should... should I take it as you are the person I have been waiting for?"

"I don’t think I am that person," Rashin replied.

Yuki could no longer hold it in. It was way too painful to come to terms with reality.

As tears poured from her eyes, the darkness around her continued to crack into tiny pieces.

"You say you’re not him! You’re not the one I’ve been waiting for, so then, what do you wan—"

"Pick me instead!" Rashin yelled, cutting her off.

"I don’t know who this person you are waiting for is, and I won’t lie to you that I am. My name is Rashin Montero, and I am my own person. Right now, I come before you, begging you to let me be the one that saves you!!!"

Yuki stumbled backward, her eyes filled with shock.

"You’ve waited all this time for this person. Everything boils down to you wanting someone to save you from yourself! Isn’t that why you’ve survived for this long?! Isn’t that why you hold so much sadness in your heart—because you want someone to help you bear it?!"

He moved forward. "Then let me be that person!!!"

Yuki broke down, her tears pouring even more.

"Help me," she said in a muffled voice.

"Yes. Let me help you." Rashin moved closer.

"Please help me," she sobbed.

"That’s right."

Rashin grabbed her by the arm. "I planned to do just that."

In the outside world, Rashin’s body was getting buried by the black flames, his own flames barely able to keep up.

He opened his eyes, his hand already placed on Yuki’s head.

"You can rest now," he said out loud.

[White Cell Aura.]

He transferred his White Cell Aura into her body, watching as the flames disappeared and Yuki began to turn back into Seriphina.

The flames that had once consumed the entire barony no longer existed.

All that was left was the aftermath of the destruction.

Rashin stood at the center of the devastation, with Seriphina resting unconscious in his hands.

From afar, he could see that all the villagers were safe, thanks to Daki and Satella, who had defended them from the attack.

No one knew what had caused the attack, and Rashin planned to keep it that way.

If people were to learn their leader was partly a Hakia, they would most likely never trust her again. Worst case scenario, they would report her to the authorities.

That was something he didn’t find justice-worthy.

Then, the system notification appeared before him.

[You saved the villagers.]

[You have gained 3 magic stones for every villager you saved.]

[You now have 150 magic stones in your possession.]

Rashin simply sighed, not like he had any energy left to question the system.

"I really want to sleep," he said out loud.
