Chapter 46: Burning village

Seriphina’s eyes widened at the revelation.

Slowly, dark flames began to surround her form, eating away at the floor around her.

All her life, ever since she survived the onslaught that took her parents from her, she believed it was done by some bandits or at least a monster...

No one else in the barony knew what caused the dangerous attack that nearly killed everybody.

To think it was all done by the monster living inside of her.

"You killed my parents," she said out loud.

The endless darkness around her began to burn, flames dancing in the sky.

With a menacing smile, Death replied, "That is correct. I killed them."

While Seriphina could hear what Death said, she could still feel that Death felt guilty about something.

Not like there was anything she could do about it.

Falling to her knees, Seriphina could no longer cry. She simply remained there, her eyes in shock.

Death held her back away, tightening her fist before stealing one last glimpse at Seriphina.

"Oh, and by the way, my real name is Yuki."

She then walked away.

Back in the outside world, beyond the infinite layers of darkness, Seriphina lost control of the monster she had been keeping asleep inside her.

Yuki had awakened.

Her black hair fell behind her, her right arm had dark flames dancing around it, and her eyes glowed with a powerful green hue.

After so long, Yuki was finally in control.

Or so she thought.

Yuki fell to the ground, her body burning up from the inside out.

Every bit of energy she had been saving inside her suddenly came bursting out from her chest.

She screamed, the energy blast shooting upward, completely shattering the ceiling and reaching the sky.

Right after that came a huge wave of flames, falling from the sky and landing all around the city, destroying houses and roads.

Rashin and Eri, who were still in the room, picked up on this.

Rashin was the first to act, speeding out of the room and heading outside to check what was going on.

Arriving outside the mansion, he could see people screaming in fear while running around to protect themselves from the flames falling from the sky.

"Shit! What the hell is going on?!"

Rashin charged forward.

[Barrier!]

He placed a barrier around a family trying to run away from the falling flames, saving them from dying.

Looking to the left, Rashin saw another group of people about to get burned by the flames.

Acting quickly, he placed another barrier on top of them, blocking the flames before they could burn the people to a crisp.

"Run!" he screamed at them.

And they did as he asked, running desperately for their lives.

"Daki! Satella!!!"

Rashin called out for his maidens, and they answered his summons.

Standing in front of him were Daki and Satella, already aware of the situation.

"Quick, help me! Get as many people away from the fire’s range!" he said urgently.

"As you wish, Master."

"On it."

Daki and Satella headed out, leading the villagers away from the growing destruction. While Daki was shielding them from the fire, Satella was using her teleportation to get them as far away as possible.

Rashin was just about to go help them when he suddenly felt the wave of the huge explosion that happened behind him.

The force was so huge it almost sent him flying. Thankfully, his auto-barrier skill activated, shielding him from the immense force.

"Eri!" he called out, worry filling his voice.

The mansion he had just stepped out of had exploded into tiny bits, leaving behind stacks of burning wood and the scent of ash.

Rashin ran toward the burnt-down mansion and began to raise the wood and stones one by one, searching for Eri.

She could be buried under the debris. He didn’t want to believe she could have gotten blown away—there was no way she could have.

She was the priestess; something like a mild explosion shouldn’t be enough to kill her.

Rashin filled his head with thoughts, anything but giving up on the fact that Eri could be alive.

And it turned out he was right.

She was indeed buried under the burning rubble, but her entire body had been burned so badly it was almost hard to recognize her.

"Eri...?"

Rashin could barely believe his eyes.

Though the raging fire was still increasing with every passing moment, Rashin did not feel the need to pay attention to it. Eri was right in front of him.

He pulled her out and held her close in his arms.

Using the skill [Flame Heal], he began to heal Eri, the blue flames scanning through her body while healing her at the same time.

Seeing a look of relief on her face, Rashin could only thank the stars that Eri was still breathing.

Whoosh!

Another wave of flames spread from the middle of the burnt-down mansion.

[Barrier.]

Rashin stretched his hand forward to place a barrier in front of him, shielding himself and Eri from the flames. A single hit from that attack would have fried him, making it even more impressive that Eri had managed to survive.

The flames kept coming in waves, some faster than others.

’So she’s right there,’ Rashin muttered to himself.

Killing the Hakia was an easy task he felt he could accomplish.

He could see Yuki on the ground, the energy shooting out from her chest to the sky and releasing waves of destructive flames into the surroundings.

It seemed like the Hakia was in a state of suspended animation, the perfect time for Rashin to kill her.

And yet, he couldn’t bring himself to do it.

He remembered vividly what Eri had told him. If he was to kill the Hakia, then Seriphina would die too.

With a frown on his face, Rashin uttered sarcastically, "Just perfect."

He gently placed Eri on the ground, covering her with his barrier before stepping out.

A slight grunt left his mouth as the flames burned his skin, only to be instantly healed by his own healing flames.

He had an edge over her power, and he intended to use it to his advantage.

With each step he took, he got closer to Yuki. The force of the flames grew more intense, but his determination remained unmatched.

Finally reaching her side, Rashin grabbed her by the hand, his way of trying to wake her up.

But the moment he made contact with her skin, he found himself inside an empty space filled with only darkness.

There was a huge cage in front of him, and on the other side was Seriphina, chained to the ground.

And behind her was the mastermind of the destruction happening in the other world.

The Fourth Pillar, Yuki—Death herself.

"Wait a sec, I’ll get you out." Rashin gave a gentle smile before turning around to look at the figure standing behind him.

She stood there with a calm look on her face, not uttering a single word.

"Correct me if I’m wrong, but you’re the Hakia trapped inside Seriphina’s body, right?" he asked.

"What if I am?" Yuki gave a painful smile. "Will you unsheathe your blade and cut me where I stand?"

Seeing him up close, Yuki couldn’t help but feel a tight knot in her chest.

She didn’t know why.

Why did she care about this individual so much? How was she sure he was the one she needed to meet?

Why did she need to meet this individual in the first place?

Nothing made sense to her.

On top of that, with most of her memories lost to the void, she felt like an empty vessel merely existing.

Rashin replied,

"Killing you means I’ll be killing Seriphina as well. So I will not be doing that."

Yuki sneered.

"But that’s not all. I have encountered my fair share of Hakias in the past. They are nasty."

Yuki felt like his words were stabbing her directly in the chest. She tried her very best to play it cool as Rashin continued.

"Evil, disgusting, and most are unbearable to look at. It’s why I can’t stand the sight of them. If I see a Hakia, my instinct immediately tells me to murder them. They are nothing but a plague in this world."

Yuki almost smiled, but one that could easily break into tears.

"That said, when I look at you—no, as I speak to you right now—I don’t feel the same way about you."

She was surprised, her eyes sparkling.

"I don’t have this overwhelming urge to erase you from the world. Sigh! It’s pretty hard to understand myself—I hate making difficult decisions. Still, a friend of mine told me, if someone is in pain, and you have the ability to help, then you should help."

Rashin stretched his hand forward.

"I don’t know if you are truly evil. I don’t know if you intend to destroy the Barony. But I do know one thing—I am willing to give you the benefit of the doubt that you are not these things. Are you willing to give me that chance, Yuki?"
