Chapter 41: Lost boy
Pa!
Rashin calmly placed the wooden box in the carriage and then pushed it towards the rest of the boxes.
"Woo, man, you’re really strong. Damn, do you lift weights or something?"
The man standing behind Rashin asked, a smile on his face as he, too, was carrying a box—only his was smaller.
"No, I do not," Rashin replied.
"Ooh, ohh?" The man placed the box in the wagon. "Then you have to be an adventurer."
Rashin paused to think about it. Though he had registered as an adventurer at the guild, he had never really taken on many quests since leaving the capital.
"Uhm, something like that," Rashin replied. He then turned around to look at the shop. "Do you need help with anything else?"
"Definitely not. Even if I did, you’ve done enough for me today. You should go rest in the mansion. I don’t think Lady Seriphina would be happy to see her guest working so hard," the man uttered.
"If... you say so." Rashin bowed his head slightly and began to walk away.
The ladies who had been standing at the side could not help but stare, their faces brightening up just from seeing Rashin walk past them.
Hands behind his head, he looked to the sky.
’I was bored staying in the mansion all day, so I decided to help out in the village. Seems they don’t need my help anymore. Should I go back to climbing the Playground?’ he thought to himself.
(Master, I agree with the latter part. As king, you need to uphold your position and keep getting stronger.)
That was Daki, speaking directly into Rashin’s head.
The more they maintained their physical form, the more exhausted they became. This was why, every once in a while, the Soul Maidens would enter their astro form and reside inside their master.
’Not that I haven’t thought about it. But...’
(Argh! Is the young master worrying about that priestess again?)
Satella chimed in.
’Not necessarily worrying. The last time I entered the Playground, I spent 30 minutes there, but when I came out, five hours had gone by. No doubt the second level will have tougher monsters—who knows how many hours I’ll use?’ he replied as he walked.
(True.)
Satella agreed.
Well, the same could not be said for Daki.
(Master!)
She exclaimed.
Daki manifested herself in her human form and stood before Rashin with her cheeks puffed.
"The hours don’t matter. It’s not like you’re doing anything for the people here that’s so important. And Eri can take care of herself; she’s not a baby. I won’t allow you to keep making excuses!" she pointed.
Rashin sighed. "Nice to see you’ve now got a loud mouth."
Daki froze, her cheeks turning red.
"Fine then. I’ll enter the Playground. We should find a place for that, though."
He looked to the side, spotting a small path leading to an alleyway.
Rashin recalled seeing land from the mansion anytime he looked through the balcony.
"Let’s go there," he turned.
"Hai!" Daki returned to her astro form.
With slow, steady steps, Rashin made his way through the alleyway.
The further he went, the darker it seemed to get—until eventually, sunlight.
A vast land with rocks and sand stretched before him. There were no buildings in sight, but it was large enough to fit hundreds of houses.
(Wow! Eh... Master? Are you sure this place is a village?)
Satella asked.
(Are you doubting the young master?!)
(Of course not! It’s just... I didn’t expect a village to look this huge!)
(Being a fool isn’t a new thing for you.)
(Hey! I swear I’ll burn you.)
Rashin paid no attention to their discussion.
Looking at the fence in front of him, he placed one hand on it before leaping over.
Landing on the other side, he was about to take a step when he heard a whimper beside him.
There, on the ground, was a boy, dressed in a rather homeless manner, sitting with blood covering his arms and legs.
The boy was shocked to see Rashin, but his dead eyes held no emotions.
’A boy?’
Rashin immediately stopped.
At first, he was confused about what to say to the boy. Then, Daki decided to take over.
Appearing in her human form, she knelt in front of the boy.
"My master would like to know if you are doing alright?" she asked.
’How did she know?’ Rashin thought to himself.
Not wanting to feel left out, Satella decided to join in, as she always appeared in her human form.
The boy raised his head to look at Daki. When he was about to speak, he suddenly winced, a sharp pain running through his body.
"Satella, heal him," Rashin ordered.
Satella wasted no time. She placed her hand over the boy, allowing her blue flames to bathe him completely.
By the time she was done, the boy had been fully healed.
"It doesn’t... hurt anymore..." he whispered.
"What are you doing in this place?" Rashin asked flatly.
The boy stood up, already shedding tears before he could give a full reply.
"I... I followed the villagers to hu..unt... to hunt down those monsters."
Rashin leaned forward. "Monsters? What are you talking about?"
The boy looked back at him. "Last night, so... some monsters attacked the village. They took some of the women with them. Father and some of the men decided to go back and save them... and... then... and then we... they died."
Rashin’s eyes widened.
"Those monsters—what did they look like?" he asked. ’If they so much as happen to be Hakias...’
"They were huge, with lots of hair on their bodies, sharp teeth, and red glowing eyes. Like giant dogs."
’Wolf people? No, I can’t be sure. I need to check it for myself.’
He moved closer. "Your parents and the villagers—do you know where they went?"
The boy nodded.
"I need you to take me there."
The boy froze with fear. Considering what he had witnessed, he hadn’t planned on going back there.
Daki sighed. "Humans. You don’t have to worry. As long as my master is there, you’ll be alright. You’re a man—act like one."
