Chapter 40: Unexpected help

"You have to get out of here, Seri! Run!" the woman yelled, tears dripping down her chin.

Behind her was a burning building, the black smoke visible from miles away.

The little girl, scared, could only shed the same tears her mother did, unable to understand what was going on.

The woman tried to push her, crying her heart out as she pleaded for the girl to run away.

"Momma, why... why are you pushing me away?" the girl asked, the pain in her voice evident.

"I just... I just don’t want you to cry, Momma. So why are you pushing me away?"

The woman was deeply hurt by the girl’s words. Still, she needed her to run.

"I’m sorry... but your mother doesn’t want you by her side anymore. She wants you gone."

Snapping her fingers, two ice humanoid creatures appeared and carried the girl, running away as fast as they could.

No matter how many times the girl screamed for the creatures to turn back, they wouldn’t listen. They were simply familiars made to follow their master’s orders.

And as they ran, the young girl was unfortunate enough to witness the gruesome sight of her mother being impaled by multiple spears.

"Mother!"

She tried to scream, but her voice was buried under the fast-moving wind.

She experienced the death of her mother.

In that moment, Seriphina woke up, lying on the bed with no one else in the room with her.

First, she raised her hand to observe it.

’It worked... again.’

With that, she sat upright on the bed. Though she was naked, her body was still covered by the bedspread.

Seriphina dug her fingers through her hair, her eyes filled with desperation.

’I’m running out of time. If I don’t find the priest fast, I’ll be a goner before anyone even comes to save me,’ she sighed. ’The only way I can buy time for myself is if I...’

She immediately shook her head, erasing the thought from her mind.

(Do it.)

A voice echoed in the back of her mind.

(Do it! It’s the only way.)

’Shut up.’

(If you don’t, I’ll be set free. Free from you. Free enough to find him—the one.)

Seriphina let out a forced chuckle. ’How many times have you mentioned this person again? You claim he is the only one that can set you free, and I still haven’t found this so-called person.’

(You have your eyes to blame for that.)

Seriphina frowned. "Get out of my head."

—Silence.

Seriphina grunted in frustration, her fingers almost digging into the bed.

...

A few hours later, she had freshened up and was fully dressed, her face almost covered under the black veil.

As she approached the living room, she noticed only Eri was there.

"Good morning," she greeted.

Eri, licking an apple-scented candle, looked at her. "Good morning."

"I do hope my maid has taken care of your breakfast. It would be quite a shame if she hasn’t. I’d feel bad," Seriphina said.

Rather than giving a straight response, Eri grunted. "I’m surrounded by idiots," she said out loud.

"What?"

"Look, I’m not trying to say you’re a bad person, but it’s quite annoying when you act all good when it’s clear you’re forcing it. And just for your information, there’s some kind of thing living inside you," Eri informed her.

Seriphina was frozen with shock for a while.

"What did you say?"

"Figured you didn’t know. I can sense someone else living inside you. It’s very faint, but it’s there. It’s best you get to a church so you can get cleansed."

"And how sure are you that that is the case?"

"Uhn? That’s basic 101 when learning to become a priestess," Eri replied.

Seriphina responded immediately. "You’re a priestess?"

Eri sighed. "No use hiding it anymore. Look, I didn’t plan on telling you, but I noticed it the very first time I arrived here. I assumed it was perhaps normal, maybe an ability of yours, so I didn’t plan on mentioning it."

She stood up. "But now the presence has gotten even stronger than before. I can tell it’s not a good thing. Well, unless I am wrong, of course."

Seriphina was speechless.

It was a secret she had planned to take to the grave.

Going to a church to get cleansed was something that had crossed her mind. And she did try it, but the first priestess who attempted it had wanted to kill her right after realizing that it was impossible to cleanse her.

If anyone else found out about it, it was safe to assume they would do the same thing.

Hence, she had always kept it a secret.

But... this random person...

’Should I kill her?’ Seriphina thought to herself, her right eye taking on a strange glow.

"See! There it is again. I felt it," Eri pointed out. "Only people with special blessings from the angel, like me, can sense something like this. You should be grateful. I advise you to get rid of that spirit before it consumes you whole."

Still having the death stare on her face, Seriphina thought to give Eri a little hope.

"Just out of curiosity, say I do have something living inside me. Could you help me get rid of it?" she asked.

Eri sighed. "I mean, sure, it shouldn’t be an issue. I actually brought it up just in case you needed my help. So it works."

"You told me to go to a church."

"You pay too much attention. Besides, if I help you, I can use that to gain a good amount of favor from Rashin. It’s a win-win for me." Eri smiled.

"You’re helping me for a man, eh?" Seriphina chuckled a bit. ’Then again, I can understand why.’

"I am helping you, aren’t I? Stop being nosy and let me exorcise you already."

"Now? Right here?"

"Of course not. I need to get the spell and other stuff ready first. Should take about an hour or so," Eri replied.

"Oh."

"I’ll call you when it’s done. You just go freshen up or something," Eri said as she walked away.

As she left, Seriphina couldn’t help but stare with suspicion.

If Eri went through with it and failed... she had already made up her mind to kill her on the spot.
