Chapter 131: WHAT A NONSENSE
Chapter 131: WHAT A NONSENSE
"If you want to keep waiting, it’s up to you," Grace said with an impassive expression. "But out of courtesy, I may tell you that the CEO is stuck somewhere important and couldn’t make time today. If you want to see her in the office, kindly take an appointment."
She lied effortlessly, making an excuse for her boss, even though she was well aware that the woman in question was currently enjoying her lunch in her office.
It was her job, after all. If her boss declared that the city would drown in sugar syrup tomorrow, it was her duty to swear it was indeed happening.
Besides, at this moment, Grace wasn’t too fond of CEO Philip either. Although it still seemed like Dove was in the wrong for whatever abrupt decision she had made, Grace, for reasons she couldn’t quite explain, didn’t like the Davis family either. She felt no remorse.
What followed Grace’s words was a pin-drop silence.
Philip was stunned. How many people dared to talk back to him like this?
And a mere assistant, no less!
He opened his mouth to retort, but then closed it again. For once, he found himself at a loss for words, especially when Grace calmly pointed out that they had no right to pass judgment on how she did her job.
Was he going to threaten her?
The situation was so pathetic that he couldn’t even do that. Despite being the CEO of Davis Enterprises, he was unable to intimidate a simple assistant. He remained silent—oddly silent—while rage boiled inside him.
Even the two assistants, who were playing no more role than being a decorative piece behind, were shocked. They knew their Boss’s temper. And they instantly knew that the CEO’s blood was boiling at the moment. But well, they found it better to act like they did not exist, specially when apparently they still had no work right now.
Just then, Rian, noticing his father’s barely-contained fury, tried to calm his own frustration. He spoke in a composed, yet firm tone.
"But Miss Grace, tell me," he began, carefully choosing his words, "is it professional or ethical for CEO Dove to pull out of a few collaborations at the last moment? Doesn’t she have any idea how long Davis Enterprises and Sterling Corporations have been working hard on these?
He inhaled sharply, holding back his irritation.
"After all these years of effort, when the projects were finally nearing completion and about to be implemented, Sterling Corporations suddenly decides to pull out." His eyes narrowed slightly, the frustration slipping into his voice despite his calm demeanor.
"Not to mention the ongoing projects that have been running for decades! And she does this without providing any explanation at all?
Rian’s eyes locked onto Grace’s. His voice was controlled but the weight of his words was unmistakable.
"Now, you tell me, Ms. Grace, how are we supposed to take this and react to it?"
He tried to remain composed, much calmer than his father, but the underlying resentment was still there. He understood they weren’t very welcome here, given the chaotic situation, but he was determined to lay out the reality for them to decide —both the good and the bad.
After all, the Davis family was certain they had done nothing wrong to warrant this sudden betrayal.
In fact, Philip and Rian had already concluded, in private, that Dove was doing this out of that old, petty grudge. It seemed ridiculous, but what other explanation was there?
They had buried that incident years ago, never touching it again. Yet, here she was—resurfacing, creating unnecessary trouble.
What did she want from them now?
Was humiliating them back then not enough? Now she was disrupting their business out of spite?
To them, Dove seemed like nothing more than a spiteful woman, ready to jeopardize everything for her own baseless personal satisfaction.
Hearing Roan’s composed yet pointed reasoning, Grace briefly faltered. It did seem wrong from their perspective at first glance. Even she was momentarily swayed by the logic of it.
But then, she recalled Dove’s words and her demeanor regarding this entire ordeal. Grace had heard and seen enough to know there was more to this than what met the eye.
She gazed at the father-and-son duo, her expression polite but unwavering. With a steady voice, she asked, "But the Sterling Corporations have already made it clear, while cutting ties, that they are ready to pay the compensations, haven’t they?
Her tone was deceptively innocent, almost childlike in its naivety, yet there was a sharpness hidden beneath it.
"Though I understand we may appear to be in the wrong, according to the most straightforward perspective, we’ve still offered to take responsibility.
So, what exactly is the problem, CEO Philip and Mr. Roan?"
Her words struck a nerve.
Philip’s and Roan’s fists clenched involuntarily, their knuckles turning white. Both of them were barely containing the boiling frustration rising in their chests.
What utter nonsense!
The collaborations that were about to be finalized were worth billions.
If those deals had gone through, Davis Enterprises would have walked away with significantly more profit than Sterling Corporations—especially in the first phase of their collaboration period.
They also had several long-standing projects running together, partnerships that had been built over years.
And now what?
Compensation?
What a joke.
In the business world, while hard work and contracts carried weight, luck and trust mattered just as much.
Sometimes, despite knowing you were surrounded by snakes, you had to trust them not to bite.
Now, Dove only had to pay compensations for the older, ongoing projects, which was hardly a blow to her company’s finances.
Given the field of their industry’s rapid evolution, the value of individual projects diminished quickly. In fact, some highly promising projects became obsolete within a few years.
But the kicker?
She wouldn’t have to pay a single penny for the deals that hadn’t yet been finalized on paper—which were supposed to be signed next week.
And who would bear the heavy losses from those failed deals?
Davis Enterprises.
The cunning vixen! Philip seethed silently.
Sterling Corporations, on the other hand, would take a heavy hit to their reputation. Yet, somehow, Dove didn’t seem to care.
If only the paperwork had been done earlier!
Philip and Roan hissed inwardly. She wouldn’t have dared to pull this stunt then.
But now, they were at her mercy.
Roan could no longer hold back his contempt. He scoffed bitterly.
"Compensation? Hah!"
His voice was dripping with derision.
"Ms. Grace, let’s be honest," he spat, "you and I both know how little value that so-called compensation holds in the face of the massive losses our company is facing."
He gritted his teeth, the muscles in his jaw tightening.
"But even if we set that aside," he continued sharply, "it doesn’t matter if you or your CEO don’t care about Davis Enterprises’ losses.
But does she not care for her own company?"
His words hung heavily in the air.
