Chapter 121: CUTE! SHE CALLED ME CUTE!
If Dante hadn’t been in the picture, Dove would have still gone through with it. But seeing him there made her want to get his opinion too—for some reason.
Maybe it was a boost of confidence? Who knew?
Dante continued to watch Dove as she explained her plan, his gaze unwavering. He didn’t interrupt, didn’t rush her, just listened with an intensity that made her heart beat a little faster. When she finally finished, he leaned back slightly, lips curving into a slow, approving smile.
"That’s not a bad idea at all, Dove."
Hearing those words from him, a sense of satisfaction settled in her chest, and she smiled too. But then, just as she was about to let herself bask in that moment, Dante raised an eyebrow. His expression shifted slightly, as if he was thinking of something else entirely.
"But..." he said, trailing off.
Dove’s brows knitted together. She didn’t like the sound of that hesitation. "But what? Is there something wrong?"
Dante shook his head mildly, a small smirk playing on his lips. "No, there’s nothing wrong. But I was thinking of an alternative... Something different from your plan, if I may?"
Intrigued, Dove leaned forward slightly, her curiosity piqued. "Of course. What is it?"
Dante studied her for a moment before saying, "Dove, you want revenge on the Davis family, don’t you?"
She nodded without hesitation. Yes, that was exactly what she wanted, in a nutshell.
"So, how about a heartfelt apology?" he proposed.
Dove blinked, then let out a dry chuckle. She was sure she had misheard him. "A heartfelt apology?" she repeated, her tone laced with disbelief.
Dante nodded, his expression unreadable.
Her amusement quickly faded, and her expression darkened. Shaking her head, she scoffed. "Dante, you don’t seem to understand—or maybe you don’t realize—what kind of woman Cara Davis is. A heartfelt apology? From her?" She let out another chuckle, this one sharp and bitter. "That woman would rather die than regret anything she’s done to me, let alone offer me an apology."
Dante chuckled too, but unlike hers, his laughter held something else—something knowing, something calculating. "And who said that only Cara Davis would have to apologize to you?"
Dove’s eyes narrowed slightly. "What do you mean?"
Dante leaned back in his chair, crossing one leg over the other with a nonchalant grace that only he could pull off. A cunning glint flashed in his gaze as he interlocked his fingers. "We’re businesspeople, Dove. And the card you’re holding is too lethal to be used so... simply."
That piqued Dove’s curiosity even further.
What she had planned wasn’t exactly ’simple.’ But the more she listened to Dante elaborate on his idea, the more her eyes gleamed with interest. He spoke with such clarity, such precise calculation, that she found herself hanging onto every word.
By the time he finished, her mouth was slightly parted in astonishment.
She leaned back in her seat, exhaling slowly. Then, a slow smile spread across her lips.
"Dante," she mused, "I must say, you’re incredibly cunning and calculated when it comes to things like this." She giggled, shaking her head in amusement.
Dante smirked, clearly taking her words as the compliment they were meant to be. He shrugged lightly, his charm practically oozing from every fiber of his being. "I’m not running Fort Groups for no reason, Madam."
Dove couldn’t agree more.
Then, an amused smirk danced in Dante’s eyes as he studied her. "Now, don’t tell me you’re not impressed by this."
Dove bit her inner lip, trying to suppress a grin. But she couldn’t lie—she was impressed. Nodding, she admitted, "That’s indeed very impressive, Mr. Lancaster."
As soon as she said it, Dante’s expression darkened. His lips pressed into a thin line.
"That’s a mean way to treat someone you just said you’re grateful to."
Dove blinked in slight panic. "What? What’s wrong?"
Dante folded his arms, his posture turning sulky. "We agreed yesterday that we wouldn’t call each other by formal titles anymore. And yet, here you are doing it again."
Dove touched her lips absentmindedly, realization dawning on her. She hadn’t even noticed.
Her gaze fell on Dante, who genuinely looked like he was sulking. And he wasn’t just pretending—he actually seemed bothered by it.
She tried to hold back her laughter, but she failed miserably. A chuckle escaped her lips, then another, until she was giggling uncontrollably.
Dante narrowed his eyes at her, watching her with mild suspicion. "What’s so funny?"
"Dante," she said between giggles, "sometimes, you’re as cute as a child."
Dante blinked. Then blinked again.
And to his absolute horror, he felt heat creeping up his cheeks.
Was he... blushing?
Why wouldn’t he? Dove had just called him cute!
Cute!
Before he could even process that, a knock sounded on the office door.
Dove glanced up. "Come in."
Grace entered, looking slightly stressed. It hadn’t even been an hour since she last came in, and yet, here she was again.
"Ma’am, there’s an issue," she reported, concern evident in her voice.
Dove’s expression shifted. "What is it, Grace?"
Grace wasn’t the type to get stressed over minor things. If she looked like this, it meant the issue was serious.
Grace for once glanced at Dante, not sure if they should be discussing all this internal business matter in front of an outsider as him.
Dove too noticed her hesitation and said, "It’s fine, Grace. You can say it just here."
What she meant was that she did not have to get bothered by Dante being here.
Taking a deep breath, Grace explained, "Ma’am, Davis Enterprises has noticed the action we took. They’re trying to reach us. CEO Davis himself has been trying to contact you."
Dove’s lips curled into a sneer. Finally.
Of course, she had changed her contact number. She no longer used the one from years ago, so naturally, CEO Davis had no way of reaching her directly.
And now, he had no choice but to contact her through her assistant.
Pathetic.
They were late. She had expected them to act much sooner. Yet, it took them over half an hour to notice?
She almost wanted to laugh.
Davis Enterprises really has gone downhill.
