Mr. Bigshot Is Obsessed with His Hidden-Marriage Wife -
Chapter 78: Something is Missing
Chapter 78: Chapter 78: Something is Missing
The old lady in the photo was still very young, seated in a wooden chair, holding one child in her arms, and another stood beside her.
Upon closer inspection, the two children looked strikingly similar.
Fu Xingzhou asked in a low voice, "Do you know why I’m ranked second among my siblings?"
"Is that your brother?"
"Yes." Fu Xingzhou’s gaze swept over the face in the photo, the child standing beside the old lady. "We were twins, he was born five minutes before me, and drowned when he was five. Because of this, Grandmother has been wracked with guilt to this day."
This was the first time Ye Yan heard Fu Xingzhou speak of his origin. Before, she only knew that he had suffered a lot in his childhood.
"Back then, our family was poor, and our birth mother couldn’t endure the hardship. She ran off with a man from another place. Grandmother endured all the bitterness to bring us up from infancy, taking care of the two of us brothers while also working outside to supplement the family income. That day, Grandmother took my elder brother to the seaside to mend fishing nets for people, and he was swept away by the waves while playing. By the time he was found, his body was already decomposed."
Ye Yan couldn’t help but place her hand over the back of his, the warmth passing through their skin.
"Grandmother’s illness has also become chronic due to taking care of us," Fu Xingzhou’s expression suddenly turned cold. "That’s why that woman is unforgivable."
Since she gave birth to them, why did she abandon them?
"Did she ever come back to see you later?"
Fu Xingzhou scoffed, "She did come back, when the Fu Family was at the height of its glory."
What she came back for was obvious - seeing the Fu Family’s success, her son had become an important figure; she wanted to reap the benefits, to use her status as their birth mother to gain the Fu Family’s forgiveness and her son’s sympathy.
Unfortunately, Fu Xingzhou would not forgive her. The only reason he let her disappear without a trace was due to that insignificant blood bond.
And what about her own birth mother?
If the Ye Family were as prosperous as the Fu Family, would her birth mother come looking for her and Ye Zhun?
Her childhood was so much like Fu Xingzhou’s, yet their life experiences were so different.
"You’ll stay over at Grandmother’s tonight," Fu Xingzhou said. "No one will disturb you."
"And you?"
"A friend arranged for me to play cards."
He rarely returned to Hong Kong, and when he did, there were surely many people lined up with invitations.
At the birthday banquet, Old Mrs. Fu did not make an appearance.
It was not until the guests had left that the old lady finally awoke. The butler set up the meal, and the parrot Jiangcha called out from its cage, "Time to eat, Old Madam. Time to eat."
Old Mrs. Fu smiled from ear to ear, pulling Ye Yan to sit down for a meal.
"Has Xingzhou gone out again?" Old Mrs. Fu added food to Ye Yan’s plate. "Is he like this in Ao City too?"
"He has many social commitments," Ye Yan replied.
Old Mrs. Fu nodded, "Xingzhou is greatly influenced by his father; he’s not naturally flirtatious. If he has upset you, just tell this old woman, and I’ll discipline him for you."
Ye Yan smiled with pursed lips.
"Ah Yan, to be honest, this old lady sees clearly. When you married him initially, it was only to appease me, to cheer me up," Old Mrs. Fu said with a kind smile. "Back then, you acted very convincingly, but liking and disliking between two people—no matter how well acted—is still fake."
Ye Yan was taken aback; she had always thought she had fooled the old lady, not realizing she had long been seen through.
Feigning ignorance was just to make the grandson happy.
"But now, you don’t have to act anymore."
Ye Yan failed to grasp the old lady’s meaning, only seeing her smile with a profound look: "This old lady hopes that you can be together for a long, long time. Even when I pass to the netherworld, I can rest in peace."
"Grandmother, you will live a long and healthy life."
Old Mrs. Fu waved her hand, "I know my health best. To have lived this long is already very satisfying to me."
Ye Yan’s nose suddenly felt sore, and she could only silently hold Old Mrs. Fu’s hand.
After dinner, Old Mrs. Fu went to rest early.
Ye Yan sat under the flower trellis in the courtyard browsing on her phone, but her mind kept dwelling on the words Old Mrs. Fu had said.
In truth, she wasn’t sure what she and Fu Xingzhou were to each other now.
She was even less able to discern Fu Xingzhou’s thoughts.
It was as if she and he existed in two different worlds. His life in Hong Kong, his business, his social circle—all were completely unknown to her.
What was it really like between a married couple? How did people who were truly in love interact with each other?
As she sat lost in thought, her phone suddenly vibrated.
Half an hour later, the car stopped in front of the entrance to a certain club, and the driver got out to personally escort Ye Yan to the top floor.
Perched atop Tsim Sha Tsui, the club’s top floor was encased in glass walls on all sides, offering a view of the ships navigating Victoria Harbor and the majestic Tai Ping Mountain—a sight beloved by both residents and tourists alike, eager to savor the splendid and dazzling night scene.
The top floor was spacious and luxurious, reserved only for the most esteemed and dignified individuals. It was said that just one night’s service fee ran into the seven figures.
Several people sat on the sofas in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows, drinking. Off to one side, someone sang the famous song "King of Karaoke."
Ye Yan thought to herself that such a high-end place was really just a posher version of a KTV.
As she entered, the man who had been lounging on the sofa rose to his full height and stepped forward, pulling her halfway into his embrace amidst the cheering and whistling.
"Mr. Fu’s new flame?"
"Quite a catch."
Fu Xingzhou led Ye Yan by the hand closer, "Not a new flame, but my wife."
He usually spoke Mandarin, but today he was fluent in Cantonese—his slightly lazy intonation sounding unspeakably sexy as it came from his mouth.
Everyone present was utterly astounded.
Who wouldn’t know of Mr. Fu of Hong Kong’s playboy ways, with a revolving door of women at his side, and here he was, suddenly bringing a woman and calling her his wife—a shock greater than if someone threw a coal bomb into Victoria Harbor.
"Mr. Fu knows how to keep the ladies happy more and more."
In modern society, the term "wife" isn’t restricted only to married couples but can also be used to add spice to a relationship.
Being scrutinized by so many eyes made Ye Yan a bit reserved, but the hand Fu Xingzhou held was warm and strong, like the most powerful support she had, ready to stand behind her no matter what, acting as her rock.
Ye Yan’s anxious and restless heart suddenly settled back into its place.
"Her name is Ye Yan." Fu Xingzhou observed everyone’s reactions, "We’ve been married for over a year, and we got married in Ao City."
"Miss Ye is from Ao City?"
Ye Yan nodded.
Since Fu Xingzhou had made such a solemn introduction, no one doubted the authenticity of his words any longer. The gazes from all around bore a mix of inquiry and interest, and in the span of a short minute, it seemed they had completely dissected and understood who Ye Yan was.
Fu Xingzhou introduced the several individuals present to Ye Yan, and upon hearing some of their names, she recognized them as household names frequently seen on TV.
Was this Fu Xingzhou’s social circle in Hong Kong?
Fu Xingzhou pulled her down to sit on the sofa and looked down at their joined hands.
No wonder they didn’t believe it; it seemed like something was missing here.
