Chapter 77: Blessing in Disguise
Chapter 77: Chapter 77: Blessing in Disguise
As soon as Fu Xingzhou entered the Fu Family’s grand hall, someone rushed over like a whirlwind.
"Second Brother, save me."
The person hid behind Fu Xingzhou, daring only to peek out with half a head.
"You move aside, I must beat this fool to death today," Fu Wei Jun wielded a stick, which was the Fu Family’s discipline stick, dark and intimidating.
Second Madam was restraining Fu Wei Jun, continuously persuading him, "Xingzhou is back today, and it’s also the Old Mrs. Fu’s birthday celebration. My lord, don’t make a fool of yourself in front of others."
"Who exactly is the fool here?" Fu Wei Jun pointed at the young man who was ducking his head, "I sent him abroad to study, but he didn’t attend even a single day of school, hanging around outside all day, and now he’s been publicly expelled from school. He has completely humiliated me."
Fu Xingrui quickly spoke up, "I wasn’t messing around, I was doing business."
"You, you still dare to talk back, I’m so mad, really so mad," Fu Wei Jun was tightly held by Second Madam, otherwise, he definitely would have landed that stick on Fu Xingrui.
"Second Brother, save me, daddy’s going to kill me."
Fu Xingzhou spoke up, "Ah Rui was indeed doing business abroad, and he has had some success."
Fu Xingrui nodded frantically, "Second Brother really understands me."
At this moment, a servant came in and said, "Second Young Master, just now a young lady said someone sneaked into Old Mrs. Fu’s garden, she asked you to have a look."
"Which young lady?" Fu Xingzhou furrowed his brow and his expression turned cold.
"A Miss Nangong, she said she’s your friend."
"I didn’t invite her, please ask her to leave." Fu Xingzhou glanced at his watch, "I’m going to see Grandma."
Fu Wei Jun gradually calmed down and handed the stick to a servant nearby. "Did Dr. Ye also come?"
"Yes."
"Second sister-in-law?" Fu Xingrui’s eyes sparkled, "Second Brother, I haven’t met the second sister-in-law yet, can I go with you to see her?"
"She’s timid, don’t scare her."
Though Ye Yan was a daughter-in-law of the Fu Family, her marriage to Fu Xingzhou, after all, wasn’t a "proper marriage" celebrated with grand nuptials, and only a limited circle close to Fu Xingzhou even knew about it.
Just like this visit, she went directly to Old Mrs. Fu’s place.
Fu Xingrui was somewhat disappointed, and Second Madam quickly pulled him aside, "Listen to your second brother."
"Got it."
Fu Xingzhou’s siblings all respected him the most; even his words carried more weight than those of Fu Wei Jun.
From afar, Nangong Yan saw Fu Xingzhou heading towards the back garden and lifted her foot to meet him.
"Miss Nangong, the Second Young Master said he did not invite you, please leave," two servants stood on either side her, assuming a posture to usher her out.
"How could that be, my relationship with Mr. Fu..."
"Those were the Second Young Master’s exact words."
"You must have mistaken, the one who should leave is the woman who just intruded into Old Mrs. Fu’s backyard, not me."
The look the servants gave her was somewhat strange, "Miss Nangong, it seems you are mistaken, that lady is the Second Young Master’s wife, not some intruder."
Nangong Yan’s eyes widened, clearly unable to immediately digest the servants’ words.
Second Young Master’s wife?
In the Fu Family, only Fu Xingzhou’s wife could hold such a title.
In a flash of realization, Nangong Yan also remembered the auction event that day; the seated area of the woman seemed to be Fu Xingzhou’s exclusive box.
She appeared again at the Fu Family’s residence, entered Old Mrs. Fu’s courtyard unobstructed, her identity implied but clear.
No wonder Fu Xingzhou never touched her, turned a blind eye to her overt flirtations, he was already married.
"Miss Nangong, please go ahead," the servant was still polite and courteous.
Nangong Yan wasn’t foolish, after understanding the situation, further harassing Fu Xingzhou would only destroy even the slight business collaboration between them.
After all, Fu Xingzhou wasn’t short of painters to serve as intermediaries, there were plenty such people available if he desired.
"That painting was a little token of my affection for the elderly lady, if Old Mrs. Fu agrees, please donate it," Nangong Yan maintained her last bit of dignity with a comment about a painting she couldn’t take back, hoping the money spent would gain some slight significance.
Even if it was negligible.
Fu Xingzhou walked through the garden to Old Mrs. Fu’s courtyard, hearing her laughter from afar.
Old Mrs. Fu, plagued by illness, usually only entertained herself by trimming plants, and had even given up her favorite hobby of painting replicas.
Hearing her laugh so heartily now, a slight smile of relief crept across Fu Xingzhou’s face.
A blessing in disguise?
Ye Yan hadn’t bought that painting at the auction, it was a fortunate mistake.
Fu Xingzhou approached.
Old Mrs. Fu sat in an armchair, a cage in front of her housing a parrot with a bright yellow head.
Whenever she asked, it answered, effortlessly switching between Chinese and English, and when spirited, it could spout strings of words even he couldn’t understand.
"It’s almost magical, truly magical," Old Mrs. Fu laughed heartily.
Even the butler was taken aback, neither she nor Old Mrs. Fu had ever seen such a linguistically talented parrot. Probably, none in Hong Kong could compare.
She had heard of a person in Hong Kong, Elder Rong, a master bird trainer, but he never sold any of his trained birds, not even willing to lend them, he lived a reclusive life and had no dealings with the outside world. Numerous wealthy businessmen had sought him out, only to be turned away.
As the butler marveled, the parrot named Jiangcha began to sing loudly, all songs of celebration, and from a distance, no one could tell that it was a bird singing.
"Grandma,"
Old Mrs. Fu was so engrossed in playing, she hadn’t noticed Fu Xingzhou approaching.
"Xingzhou, come and see what good stuff Ah Yan brought me," Old Mrs. Fu beckoned, and Fu Xingzhou sat next to her, glancing at Ye Yan.
Ye Yan winked at him, a subtly sly hint of seeking approval.
The parrot was a gift from that old gentleman; even though she insisted on paying, the stubborn gentleman had thrown not just the cage but himself out.
Later, she discovered that this old gentleman was Elder Rong, a famous bird trainer from Hong Kong who had represented the city in numerous international competitions, his reputation global.
He never sold any of his trained birds; she really had faced great honor and fortune.
Old Mrs. Fu, frail in health, needed to lie down and rest after chatting with the bird for a while.
The butler commented with a smile, "Old Mrs. Fu hasn’t been this happy or talkative in a long time."
Fu Xingzhou held Old Mrs. Fu’s hand, his gaze filled with warm smiles.
Ye Yan watched him quietly, her expression unconsciously softening.
In front of Old Mrs. Fu, he wasn’t the decisive tycoon of Hong Kong nor the influential Gambling King of Ao City.
He was just a devoted younger family member, an utterly ordinary, good grandson.
Old Mrs. Fu was fast asleep, and Fu Xingzhou stayed by her side, sitting quietly, occasionally glancing at her.
Ye Yan pointed at the photograph on the nightstand by Old Mrs. Fu’s bed.
