’I thought I told both of you to go and hide!’. I mind linked them, but they were stubborn.

The heavy footsteps got closer, and my eyes widened, including my breathing... It hastened.

Then I walked close to the door, making sure that both Caden and Chase were standing behind me.

In no time, the intruder appeared in front of the door and halted, staring at me.

I was just a second away from attacking him when I halted.

’Damien?’. I thought, and when I saw that Caden and Chase were about to attack him, I stopped them, "Don’t!".

They were confused and had to look at me, and then look at Damien.

"Mom. What is going on?". Caden said with a frown on his face. "Do you know him? Why did you stop my brother and me from attacking him?".

I returned to my human form and stepped closer to Damien, despite seeing the way Chase stretched out his hand at me, as if warning me not to get closer to Damien, as he could be a great threat to me.

"What are you doing in my home, beta Damien of the shadows’ pack? To what do I owe this surprise visit?". I asked him, and purposely announced who he was, so that my sons would quit being super alarmed.

I turned to Chase, who muttered, and he was staring at Damien in disbelief, with his mouth opened.

"I tracked my Alpha all the way here". Damien said. He entered the room and walked past me and my sons and went to Anastasia, my niece, who was still asleep on Caden’s bed.

My sons and I had to turn to him.

He squatted beside the bed, and was staring at Anastasia’s face as he said, "What happened to you? Why is your presence weak, like it has been drained? I came too late". He clenched his fists, before he stood up and carried her in his arms.

He began to leave the room without even saying anything to me or my sons.

He did not even care to ask us what happened to Anastasia, since he found her in my mansion.

I am aware that Damien had always been cold, even way before I was banished from the shadows’ pack.

But, at least, back then, he never treated me in this way. "I am sorry!". I apologized to him and went after him.

It happened when I was banished from the shadows’ pack and was leaving. That was when fate decided to make me leave with full regrets.

Damien halted. "I believe you owe me no apology, Luciana. Alpha Ashton and Luna Allegra are the ones you should apologize to, not me". He said to me coldly, and went off without sparing me a single glance.

Seeing that he completely ignored me, I felt a stinging pain in my heart and had to hold onto the wall for support. Maybe it was because I was still bonded to him as his mate. That was why I felt so hurt.

"Mom. Are you alright?!". Chase panicked and came to me.

But I silently shook my head at him and left, heading to my room.

Caden’s pov,

I watched my mother leave and already knew that something was wrong somewhere. I understood that something must have happened between my mother and beta Damien in the past.

Diverting my attention to the young man on Chase’s bed, I wondered, ’What should we do with him?’.

’Easy, Caden. You can throw him out of the mansion, or wait for him to wake up and leave by himself’. Jeremy casually said to me, and he sounded very serious about it.

"Caden, I don’t think our mom is alright. There’s something going on with her. She didn’t even ask us again to tell her how we found our elder sister and this young man and brought them both here". Chase came and said to me.

His brows frowned and he looked sad.

I sighed. "I noticed that. But Chase, I think our mother wants some time to think to herself. Let’s just leave her be for now".

He nodded at me, before going ahead to sit on the sofa. He lowered his head and was staring at the floor when he said, "There goes our chance of properly introducing ourselves to our elder sister".

I shook my head because of how downcast he was. I went and sat beside him on the sofa.

"Our sister is currently still in the city, Chase. And I believe that Beta Damien won’t return to the shadows’ pack with her since she is unconscious".

"I hope you are right, brother".

Beta Damien’s pov,

After leaving the mansion, I stopped walking and looked back.

’I didn’t expect that this mansion belonged to her’. Darren said to me, and I had to agree with him on this one. I did not expect it.

’You saw that right, Damien? Those twins. One of them inherited Alpha Ashton’s golden hair and red eyes. And if I’m not mistaken, they looked almost around that age when that happened. Could they be...’

"I think so, Darren". I replied to him.

’If that is the case, then things in the shadows’ pack are about to become confusing and interesting’. Darren said to me.
