Chapter 96: Why should I?

"What is going on here, Uncle Alex?" Adam asked through gritted teeth and clenched jaws.

Adam could feel every inch of his body tremble in anger and hatred. His eyes bore into those of Alex while hiding his hatred towards him. He already blamed and hated Alex for returning and taking his position as the CEO of Apex Groups. Now he was taking his woman, too? Must he take everything before he is satisfied?

"Uncle Alexander, let go of Sara," he demanded. He took his steps closer, but for some reason, he didn’t get close enough to be able to pry their hands apart.

"And why would I do that?" Alex asked. His expression was calm and unphased. His voice was cool as he spoke. "I do not see a reason to let go."

"Sara, let go of him," Adam redirected his question to Sara since it was obvious that he couldn’t make Alex do that. "He is just your boss. You know you don’t have time to do that with him," he added.

Sara had initially been very conscious of his presence and even panicked because this was the first time she was facing him after accepting her feelings for Alex. But the way he spoke as if he had her under control or had any right to dictate her life irked her. It snapped a cord within her. They broke up. They had nothing to do with each other. The right to tell her not to get close to other men was lost after their breakup. So what was he trying to prove?

That he still had that right over her? Or that she couldn’t be with another man because she was once with him? How audacious!

"Let go of him right now, Sara..." Adam said, his irritation evident in his voice. He took a step forward, no longer listening to the warning bells ringing on his head.

"Why should I?" She asked, and he instantly halted, gritting his teeth. Alex had asked those same questions, but it didn’t irritate him as much as when she did. "Why should I listen to you or do as you say? What right do you have to tell me who to touch and who I shouldn’t?" She was visibly annoyed, and they could see it.

Alex, on the other hand, felt pride when she didn’t try to take away her anymore and rather held his own firmly. Hearing Adam command her like that had provoked him, but he wanted her to defend herself. When the ball falls on his court, he would take it, but for now, it was on hers.

"You are my finance, Sara, and he is my uncle. It is improper for a woman to be that close with another man, in-laws or not," Adam stated. He wanted to go and pull her to his side. The sight of her with another man didn’t sit well with him. To make it worse, it was his uncle, Alexander. Not that he would have preferred if it were someone else, or maybe not, but just couldn’t stand it.

Sara arched a brow, an amused smile playing on her lips as she wondered if he had lost his mind or something. He was calling her his fiance even after they had broken up for weeks now.

It has been weeks, yet this man never once appeared before her, but here he was today still calling her his fiance. Had he no shame at all!

"Are you alright, Adam? Do you need a medical checkup?" She asked, now worried about his health. His mental health didn’t seem alright to her after his bold claim on her.

Alex chuckled at her question, infuriating Adam. He couldn’t hold back the laugh, and he didn’t even try to. He didn’t expect her to ask that even though he also thought something was definitely wrong with Adam. Perhaps it was now that the reality of their break was hitting him in the face and has become desperate and refused to accept that painful reality. But it’s too bad for him. Alex has decided to take back his woman, and he wouldn’t allow anyone else, not even his family and kin, to take her away.

"How could you...?" Adam began but was rudely interrupted by Sara, who had had enough of him.

"Adam..." she called, her voice sharp and gaze piercing. "In case you have forgotten, allow me to remind you. You and I, Adam, have long been done, and you have yourself to blame for that. Do you expect me to keep sulking over you? Or do you expect me to single forever because you hurt me? Don’t flatter yourself, Adam."

"Did you plan this?" Adam gritted his teeth as the reality sunk in. He turned his attention to Alex, asked in an accusatory tone, blaming Alex even for their breakup. "You planned for all of this to happen, didn’t, Uncle?"

"Adam," Alex called, his tone, cool and calm and his gaze even gentle. "Are you saying I planned for you infertility to be discovered? I planned for Sara to witness and call off your engagement? Or perhaps the scandal that led to the whole knowing you are no longer together?" Alex smiled. " Trust me when I say if I want to ruin, it would take so long. I wouldn’t have waited so long g to take her back. You should know that already."

Seeing the smile on his face as he worded those words, Alex felt a chill run down his spine, and what did he mean to take her back?

Sara also turned to look at him when she heard that. So there was really something between them in the past! She thought. But then why didn’t he ever come back? He rather chose to watch from a distance. Was he perhaps waiting for her to move on? But that didn’t seem right. He is here claiming her. He wouldn’t do that if he wanted her to move on. Many questions circulated her mind, but the time was not right to ask them.

"What do you mean by ’take her back’?"Adam asked, the furrow between his brows deepening.
