Melting Her Cold Heart -
Chapter 83. Awkward Dinner
Chapter 83: 83. Awkward Dinner
At the dinner table, as everyone arrived, the surprise upon seeing Alex seated at the table beised Wiliams was evident in their eyes. Nicholas seated at the other end of the table and also came as a surprise to Dominic and his family, for Nicholas had never given them face before. Imagining him sitting with them over dinner was unimaginable until today.
"Elder Legend," Dominic greeted. Nicholas looked at him and gave him a nod. It wouldn’t be right to ignore Wiliams’ children now.
Seeing Nicholas acknowledge their father, Adam and Olivia also gave their greetings to the man, but Lily was still hesitant. She hated him for visiting today, making everything seem pre-planned.
"Uncles Alex," Olivia smiled as she called to him. Alex looked up at her, seeing her smile. He k ew she must be up to something, but he wasn’t certain, so he remained silent. "We... no, I wasn’t expecting you here," she said while fidgeting with her fingers.
"I didn’t think I’ll be coming here either," Alex replied humorlessly, but Olivia giggled.
Adam glared at his sister, perfectly aware of what she was doing. But he couldn’t blame her if she wanted to get closer to Alex and he couldn’t stop her either. They were all family, and no one would see it otherwise unless there were given reason to.
Lily looked at her daughter as if she was looking at an alien, and Dominic didn’t pay any mind to it. To him, Olivia was still just a child, and one should take to heart everything a child does.
"Have a seat, everyone," Williams said once everyone was present.
Once seated and he was about to pick up his silverware, Sean cleared his throat. He closed his hand with Selena as all eyes turned to them. "Selena and I have an announcement," almost everyone frowned. The last announcement they heard still left a sour taste in their mouths. They didn’t need another. "We promise it will surely liven the moment," he said.
Williams gave a nod of approval, and he nodded back in appreciation.
"We are pleased to announce that it jas been confirmed that Selena is with child. The family doctor can..." he didn’t even get to finish his words when Lily exclaimed in shock.
"What?!" As soon as she said this. She immediately realized her mistake and cast down her eyes, avoiding every pair of eyes at the table. She didn’t mean to say it. It was just...
’Why did I say that out loud?’ She reprimanded herself. It was purely unintended.
"This is nothing but good news for the whole family. Lily, is there a problem?" Williams asked.
She could feel his pressuring eyes on her along those of everyone else and felt ashamed. She really needed to learn to control her reactions a lot better.
"Father I... I am sorry. It’s just... it was so sudden and unexpected that I... I am sulorry, Father, Sean," Lily stammered.
"Let this not repeat isteslf again," Williams warned. Who on earn wiuld have such a strong g negative reaction to news such a childless woman conceiving a child if not someone who didn’t wish her happiness? He couldn’t understand how his family went from supportive family to one that was jealous of each other.
"Understood, Father," Lily replied, her face down, unable to hold his gaze. Another pair of piercing was the one at her side. Nicholas Legend also stared shaprly at her with a heavy scowl on his face.
"Sean and Selena," Williams called. His eyes softened as he turned to the pair. "I am happy for you and very proud that they will be another addition to the family. Congratulations to the both of you," he said, and Selena beamed.
"Thank you, Father," Selena said, now feeling like a shy young girl appearing before her in-laws for the first time. But there was an undeneliavke pride in her eyes.
"Congratulations to and the Crawfords," Nicholas said. It didn’t matter where or when. The news of the coming of a child was always a good one. That was what Nicholas believed.
"Thank you, Elder Legend," Sean accepted his well wishes. After that, everyone else did the same and soon the dinner began with one side of the table being filled with smiles while the other, was too gloomy as if there were in separate worlds instead being seated at the same table.
The dinner quickly came to an end, but no left the table yet. Alex checked his time as his thoughts wandered back to Opulence Oaks. Has she had her dinner? If she did, was ut tye sane way as her breakfast? He suddenly grew worried as he thought about the woman he had left at home. It certainly wasn’t easy leaving her alone. Not because he didn’t trust but because he knew her state of mind right now was not in its best.
"You seem quite eager to leave Alexander. Is there a problem?" Dominic asked, as he had noticed how many times Alex had checked for the time within give minutes.
Alex met his brother’s gaze, his question, although in a way made things worse for him as he could already imagine Sara deciding to leave him instead of what he was hoping for, Dominic didn’t seem to mean that in a hurtful way. He closed his eyes and took ashallow breath.
"Yes, and I must leave at once..."
"Pleaee a for a while longer," Selena said, and Alex had to pause, turn, and look at her. That was the first time his sister-in-law had asked him for anything.
"Alright, just a little longer," he said. His relationship with Sean and Selena weren’t bad. It wasn’t that close, but he could grant this request. Besides, he had to congratulate them properly, not with mere words like what happened earlier
"Thank you," she said in gratitude.
"Is this about the woman we heard about? The reason you are so unsettled," Lily asked, and every eye turned to her againa and she immediately regretted it.
"Did something happen to her?" Nicholas asked, now worried. If something was wrong, he wouldn’t mind if Akex had left even before the dinner.
"She is fine, Grandfather, I give you my word," Alex replied. Somehow, talking about her had managed to ease him up a bit.
"That sis good," Nicholas nodded as his shoulders relaxed. "You and I need to talk after this, Son. It is important that we do," he said in a firm tone.
"Did something happen while on your trip to Easton?" Alex examined Nicholas, but the man gave nothing away. "Alright, later," he gave.
"You were in Easton? What for?" Williams asked now, understanding g why Nicholas was so exhausted earlier. He had just returned and came to see him.
"A word with Trevor Goldman before he kicks the bucket," Nicholas replied, but Williams knew it wasn’t exactly that.
"It is great news to hear that there is someone that Alex likes. When do we meet her?" Dominic asked once the eldest was done with the not so surprising short conversation.
"..." Just as he was about to reply to Dominic, his phone rang, and he paused, taking a second to look at the caller ID he excused himself. "I need to take this," he said, leaving the table.
"Young Master," Mrs Lawson’s voice came through. She sounded worried, and something stirred inside him, but he forced himself to remain composed.
"What is it?" He asked, trying not to sound impatient.
"Miss hasn’t been eating well. This morning, she barely touched her food, and now it’s even worse. I don’t know what to do to make her eat some more," the middle-aged woman laid her complaints before him. He had instructed her to inform him of any changes, and this was something important. She could watch Sara starve herself or for the two to keep ignoring each other.
"I’ll be there soon, have some food available and stored in the fridge. I’ll get her to eat," he said in an understanding tone. He had seen her order a cup of Americno at the office, but she didn’t even touch it. He had no idea she didn’t have her breakfast either, and now, she was also not having her dinner.
"I’ll do that, Young Master," she replied, the relief in her voice not being missed by Alex, and he knew she was truly worried.
"Mhm," he hummed before disconnecting the call. By the time he reached the table, the dishes had been cleared, and his eyes met those of Williams and Nicholas. "Something came up, and I have to go." He then looked apologetically at Selena and Sean.
"That is fine, Alex. We understand," Sean said, and Selena nodded.
"Thank you," saying that, he turned around and left. Alex truly envied the relationship between Sean and Selena. They were perfect for each other.
