Melting Her Cold Heart -
Chapter 79. Thinking About Him
Chapter 79: 79. Thinking About Him
At Legend Corp.
It was lunchtime, and Sara sat alone on a table at the far corner just beside a window. She had no appetite, but here she was. Before, he was a cup of Americno but all he did was sit on the table.
With her hands resting on the table as her body leaned forward, her gaze was stuck on the view outside, but her mind was not focused on it. She was thinking back to everything that had happened until this moment.
Just every other day, Alex was in a meeting. She, along with Kai, had been present, but he barely paid attention to her. He wouldn’t even look at her if he didn’t have anything to say to her. The indifference in his tone each time he spoke had stung her badly, but she said nothing, silently bearing the ache. Following him to his office after the meeting to hand him what she had drafted out as well as his schedule based on the meeting, all he did was just take it and bury his face in his work.
When she stood there and didn’t leave, he looked up at her and offered a professional smile, "You have done well, Miss Ambrose," he had said before focusing on his work again.
Usually, he would be standing right beside her. Or have her cornered, caging her between his body and the desk or just shamelessly wrap his hand around her as if she were his possession. Whispering sweet nothings and even teasing her and stealing her kisses, but none of that happened.
Sara missed his warmth on her body. The way his touch gave her comfort and stirred unwanted thoughts and feelings. His sweet scent that reeked of masculinity that was body frightening yet offered a sense of security. His strong arms around that made her feel safe.
Sara instinctively wrapped her hands around herself without even realizing it. She reminisced his touch and the feeling.
"Are you alright, Sara?" A voice managed to snap her out of her thoughts.
She quickly unwrapped her hands and looked at who had spoken. She sighed in relief when it was a familiar face.
"Mel," Sara didn’t know how long she had been there, but she couldn’t be more embarrassed that someone had caught her while daydreaming about their boss.
"Mhm-hmm. Are you alright? I have been standing here for quite some time, yet you hardly noticed me," Melanie asked. She pulled a chair in front of Sara and sat down. She was from the Public Relations department and was Sara’s desk neighbor. They weren’t very close, but their relationship could be considered better than what she had with everyone else in that department.
"I am sorry, I had a lot on my mind," she said without going into detail.
"I noticed," Melanie nodded her head. "It’s been awhile since I saw you here. Is it your time off?" She asked because Sara always had her lunch with the president, but today...
"Yeah, you could say that," Sara replied. If only they knew that she had always wanted to come here but their boss wouldn’t let her. And now that she was here having her lunch alone, she wanted to be wherever he was at the moment.
"I could say that...?" Melanie raised a suggestive brow.
Sara let out an awkward chuckle. "This office will be a lot busier by Monday, you know. You should get ready for that," she tried to change the conversation. She couldn’t tell her what was truly going on.
"It will be like every other Monday. What’s there that’ll be new? Although I have to admit, since President Legend took over, it’s been a lot more....stressful," she said while tapping her chin in a thoughtful manner.
Sara was glad that she took the bait.
"It won’t be the same, especially for the PR and a few others. In fact, the entire office will be busy. I won’t be surprised if new employees are hired to assist," she said, and Melanie frowned, confused by her words. "You will understand once it’s time," she smiled, not willing to spill the tea.
"What is happening on Monday? Come on S, ra, you can’t just say something like that and leave it half way," Melanie stood up and went to the seat beside Sara and sat down. She then held Sara’s arm, shaking, and urged her to talk.
"I can’t. The president hadn’t said anything about it. I only know because I was there," Sara said, and Melanie pouted.
"I should be able to get a VIP treatment as the secretary’s friend, right? You can tell me, and I won’t spill the beans. I promise," she raised her hand like a little school girl making a pledge.
"No can do," Sara replied and pursed her lips.
"Fine. But you’ll have to help me if I can’t handle it, okay?" Sara nodded, and she beamed. "By the way, we still don’t have a manager for the PR department. Jocelyn Davis was fired. There hasn’t been a replacement. Who would lead the operation?"
Sara blinked. She had totally forgotten that Alex had left her in charge of assigning a new manager to that department. "I’ll see what I can do about it. We still have tomorrow, right? A manager will be assigned before next week."
"Okay. I hope whoever gets picked will be better than Jocelyn," Melanie mumbled as she stuffed the fries into her mouth.
"Still love your fries, I see."
"Yep," Melanie nodded.
Sara appreciated the distraction that came along with her. She was beginning to lose her mind sitting alone and left to think about Alex and the effect he had on her. Even when he did nothing, he still occupied her mind.
She shook her head and mentally patted her cheeks. She was once again getting lost in thought of him.
"I’ve been wondering, Sara," Melanie’s voice couldn’t have come at a better time.
Sara composed herself quickly as she listened.
"Did you know the president before? The way he requested for you isn’t the same as... It was more like he just wanted t9 follow the rules and at the same time wanting to keep you close. You know like..." she trailed off.
"You could say we knew each other," Sara couldn’t bring herself to deny knowing him from the past. "But I didn’t think he would return after being away for so long. Taking charge of the business was also a surprise."
She didn’t know what she was saying or even why she said it but she couldn’t stop herself.
"I understand now," Melanie nodded her head. "I won’t be surprised if one day you become Mrs Legend, our lady boss," she said with a genuine and warm smile.
Sara felt her cheeks warm up after hearing her. Did you want that? She even found herself picturing it happening.
**
Inside the office, Alex was staring at the monitor. Kai sat across from him with an amused smirk playing on his lips.
"For someone who started the game, you seem quite affected by it," he teased. Alex onky lifted his head and gave a fleeting glance at him before silently watching the monitor again.
"Who is it with her?" He asked. Kai’s brows pulled together as he stood up, went around the desk to see who he was talking about.
"Let me find out," Kai replied. He pulled out his table where he had tabs on every employee in the company, especially those in this office. A few minutes later, he found the woman’s picture among the many. Tapping on it, her information appeared on his screen.
"Melanie Parker. She works with Public Relations," he said and Alex hummed.
At least there was someone there whom she used to talk to. "Run a background check on her. I want to know everything about her," Alex ordered.
"If I didn’t know better, I would have thought that you have taken an interest in her," Kai said, raising a brow in askance when he was met by Alex’s pointed look. "What? Don’t you know how that order can be misinterpreted?"
"..."
Alec was silent.
"This game you are playing, it could cost you everything you have worked so hard to build between you two, Alex. Don’t forget, Dane is still here and their encounter is inevitable. They will surely meet. Either at the banquet or some other place. A woman seeking affection can easily be swayed..."
"She is not like other women," Alex said with so much conviction. Kai was left speechless. "He can’t swat her that easily. I won’t allow it even if he manages to try."
"But this is hurting her," Kai argued and Alce went silent again.
Yes. He could see it was hurting her. Seeing her sit and stare blankly at a window was not something he enjoyed but this was necessary. She needed to know what she wanted and make that decision.
"I will be over soon," he said. It was also killing him on the inside. So many times he wanted to hold her. So many times he wanted to kiss her. Just to pick her up and place her on the desk as he kissed her senseless but he couldn’t. Everything he had to say to her, he pushed it all away. He couldn’t take more of this for long. His whole body screamed to touch her.
