Chapter 54: 54. Addressing The Media

Jessa returned to Sara’s apartment and called Bernice. While the phone rang, she paced back and forth counting every second that it was left unanswered. Then suddenly, she stopped and Bernice’s voice chimed through.

"I have done as you asked, what is now?" She said in a whining tone. Jessa took a second to gather her thoughts before she replied,

"I have sent you an address, meet there immediately. I am waiting," she said and Bernice, getting the urgency in her tone was able to pick up that something wasn’t right.

"What happened, babe?" She asked with concern marring her voice.

"Get here and you’ll know. Be quick. I am also Jaxon," she said and ended the call before Bernice could utter another word.

Jessa scrolled through her contact list and found the name she was looking for. Without a second to waste. She dialed it and it was answered almost on the first ring. "Jax..." she called but the man’s calm and playful tone threw her off.

"Hey, beautiful, finally remembered me?" Jax said and she pinched the space between her brows to rein in her emotions. She needed him and couldn’t risk provoking him now.

"I need a favor from you. Could you come to me?" She pleaded and there was a pause before Jaxon spoke.

"Did anyone hurt you?" He asked, his tone suddenly turning serious. "Jes, did someone hurt you?" He repeated and she bit on her lower lip.

"I..." she wanted to speak but he interrupted her.

"Where are you right now?" He asked. She could imagine him picking up a shirt and throwing it over his shoulder as he matched out of the house or wherever he was. He wasn’t the type to keep his shirt on. Not ever.

"I’ll send you my location," she said and he hummed.

"Wait for me."

"This way, Mr Crawford," David said as he opened the door to the backseat of the car and Williams stepped out. His polished black shoes landed gently yet, firmly on the ground and each step that he took premised and measured.

"You have done well, David," Williams complimented the man who never fails to deliver. Even now that he should be retired, he was still here doing his bidding with humility.

"Of course. I couldn’t allow myself to fall behind your expectations," David Wilson replied.

Behind was Mr North and then Adam and his parents followed by Sean who was the only calm one among the Crawford descendants.

"I am sorry that I had to call you back like this. But it seems we will be taking control again for the time being, my good friend," Williams said and David smiled.

"That is expected. I am sure the board must have forced your hand," David replied.

As they walked on, the employees greeted them but the knowing look in the gazes couldn’t be hidden. They replied with nods and smiles to the people they walked past until they stopped before an elevator and David pushed the button to open it.

Once inside, Mr North closed it behind them but it was only the three of them inside. Sean, Adam and his parents had to take another elevator. Along with the bodyguards that came with them.

Arriving in the conference room, Williams was escorted to the seat at the head of the table. The reporters were seated across them eager to start their question section. But investors Adam walked in, he became the center of attention. Some of the reporters even stood up and approached him had it not been for the bodyguards who were quick to react and shield him from them.

"Take a seat everyone. Mr Crawford is here to make an announcement and might also answer some of your questions as long as they do not cross the line," David said, trying his hardest to calm the crowd who looked like hungry sharks ready to devour Adam.

"North, have Adam wait outside until we are done," Williams said to the butler who wasted no time and left while a bodyguard took his place to protect the chairman.

"Master Adam, please this way," Mr North said to Adam who didn’t need to be told what was happening to understand. He cast a glace at his grandfather whose attention was on everyone except him.

"You can’t send him away just like that, Mr North..." Lily wanted to protest but Dominic stopped her. She couldn’t throw a tantrum here, in front of the media. It would only fan the already burning flames. She clenched her fist and gritted her teeth.

"Don’t make a scene, Lily. Things are already difficult as they are," Dominic said in a whisper tone.

Silently, Adam left the conference hall only to stand outside and look through the transparent part of the door. The media were was again seated and their notepads and cameras as well as recorders ready to begin.

Dominic and Sean sat by Williams’ left side while David and Mr. North sat by his right.

Williams cleared his throat. Deciding to go straight to the point and end it as quickly as possible.

"First of all, I want to thank you all for coming despite the short notice," he said and some if the reporters nodded while others just muttered some inaudible words which he couldn’t care less about. "I am aware of what is going on social media and I know you all have many questions to ask but you should also understand that this is a family matter and can not be discussed with the public."

There was dissatisfaction in the expressions of everyone seated but he continued without paying mind to their thoughts and reactions. Once he is done, they can go ahead and assume as much as they want, but that won’t change a thing.

"I have come here today to address a few things. One is concerning Ms. Ambrose, Adam fiancée. I have seen all the slander against her, people calling her a coward for keeping silent and a gold digger," his expression turned sharp and gaze piercing as he stared at the reporters with a silent warning. "There isn’t a woman out there more virtuous than she is. Slander against her will not be condoned no matter who the offender might be, be it my family or a stranger."

The warning was clear and everyone exchanged wary glances with each other. They thought that the man was still mad because the marriage between Sara and Adam will hold but his next series of words left them all stunned and puzzled. Why was he still taking such drastic measures?

"The engagement between Ms. Sara Ambros and my grandson have been annulled. I expect everyone to treat her with the respect that she deserves and nothing less."

Beside him, Lily and Dominic stared at him with stunned silence and disbelieving gazes. Did he just announce that to the media?

"Dominic..." Lily felt the earth under feet shift and she became light headed. Everything was over for their son, they just knew it.

"I know," Dominic said, equally as irritated and agitated as she was.

"Elder Crawford..." a reporter called out from the crowd wanting to ask questions but David raised a hand to silence him.

"Let them, David," Willaims said. He wanted to announce Adam’s suspension but he could take a few questions if that would make everything he had previously said clearer.

"Thank you," the reporter who had earlier risen up said and asked his question. "What about Mr Crawford? We are all aware of the damage the scandal had caused the Crawford Groups."

That was not the question he had anticipated but that still works too. He took a moment to answer but gave a nod to the reporters who knew that his question would be answered.

"My grandson, Adam Crawford has been suspended until further notice. That is his punishment for the trouble that he has caused," Williams replied and everyone exchanged knwoing glances while taking down what he had said.

Outside at the door, Adam balled his fist so tight that his knuckles turned white. His eyes galred sharply at Williams but what could he do? He couldn’t walk in there strange him. He couldn’t even do something like that at home but he also couldn’t deny to urge to do it. It clawed at him. He took a deep breath and released his fists then he turned around and left the floor completely.

He had no business being there anymore. He would only hurt himself if he stayed longer and heard anymoreod whatever Williams would say to the world.

"Mr Crawford," Adam stopped as soon as he stepped foot inside the office that used to be his. Inside was Malerie, it appears she has been waiting for him.
