Melting Her Cold Heart
Chapter 53. A Trip Down Memory Lane

Chapter 53: 53. A Trip Down Memory Lane

Jessa left Opulent Oaks after getting the answers to her questions which Alex didn’t see the need to hold back any information as long as it wasn’t closing the line or something that would get her into trouble.

Alex sat behind the desk, most of the work that should have been done at the office had been brought home or sent through the mail. Though his eyes were fixed on the screen of the computer in front of him, his mind wandered back to fifteen years ago.

The frantic cries and screams of a little girl could be heard from afar and fifteen Alex, who had gone to spend the holiday with his grandfather in a small peaceful town away from the capital, couldn’t help approaching.

With his bodyguard in tow, he went through the alley with a crease between his brows.

The voice of the crying girl started decreasing and he picked up his pace only to come to abrupt stop upon reaching the clearing. There he saw a girl holding on to an unconscious woman, one he assumed to be her mother since that was what she had been shouting.

"Call an ambulance immediately," little Alex ordered his bodyguard while he dashed forward to where they were. The sight of the blood pooled on the ground nearly had him throwing up but he held it in. He looked at the girl’s tear stricken face and unkempt appearance and knew she must have been crying for a long time.

Dried blood stuck to her body and clothes and some could even be seen in her hair. No matter how hard she tugged and even hitting the woman on the ground, she didn’t react. Her complexion was as white as paper and the color in her eyes was also gone. Alex didn’t need a genius to know that the woman was dead. He stood there not knowing what to do. Or say. Should he approach her and comfort her? Or should he just tell her the painful truth? He didn’t want to be the bringer of bad news but right now, someone needed to let her know the reality.

"Young Master," the bodyguard, after calling the ambulance as instructed, came to his side and scrunched his nose at the sight before him. But he still made his report. "The ambulance will be here in a few minutes."

Alex only nodded with replying. His eyes were still on the girl who hadn’t acknowledged their presence yet and still clung tightly to her mother’s corpse. Alex took a step forward, his feet feeling so heavy as if they weighed a ton. Sith each careful step he took, he contemplated on the right action to take.

She was no longer wailing and even her tears had stopped streaming down her cheeks

She appeared exhausted and he could understand why. He didn’t know how long she was here but she needed to leave this place and also accept the reality before her.

"Austin," Alex called his bodyguard who was right behind him. I need you to pull the woman off her," his voice was soft and almost in a whisper as if afraid of startling the girl.

The bodyguard froze for a moment but upon seeing the pitiful state of the girl, he reluctantly stepped forward. "Yes, Young Master."

Alex went straight to her and squatted down to her level but she still gave no reaction. He frowned. Wasn’t she the one crying before so what happened? He touched her and her body slumped nearly hitting the ground had he not been fast enough to catch her.

"Lift her now," Alex ordered, his voice coming out stern and hurried.

Without waiting a second longer, the bodyguard raised the woman’s corpse and Alex was able to pick the girl from under her.

"She must have been protecting her daughter," Austin, the bodyguard said, feeling his eyes sting as tears threatened to fall. It was admirable of the woman to do everything like this to protect her child but now she was gone and her daughter scarred and probably traumatized. He pitied the little girl.

"Where is the dawned ambulance?" Alex yelled, unable to contain himself anymore. What if the girl also died because of their lateness? He wouldn’t forgive himself if that happened. "Where is the car?" if the ambulance would be late then driving her to a hospital themselves was the best solution.

But before they could leave the alley, the ambulance arrived and a paramedic team rushed out along with a team of police officers. They were mortified to see a dead woman and an unconscious child but that didn’t stop them from doing the work as efficiently as possible.

"I am sorry to ask but we would like you to come with us. We have a few questions..." a policeman was talking to Alex and his bodyguard but Alex’s attention was somewhere else.

Alex glanced at the ambulance that was about to leave and walked away from the policemen. He jumped into the ambulance and closed the door just before it drove off leaving them staring at the retreating ambulance.

Alex sighed and stood up. He walked to the window overlooking the front yard staring at the perfectly mowed lawn trimmed flowers. Sara most likely didn’t know this part of what happened that day but they both knew that day changed her.

Everything changed that day, not only for Sara but also him. He found himself unable to leave her side, wanting to be there to protect her. He didn’t know but he assumed it was because of the one thing that they had in common, their dead mothers whose corpses were lying right in front of them. While he was able to overcome it, she couldn’t and he was determined to help her overcome hers.

From that, the feeling he had now started sprouting and spreading its roots in his heart. He didn’t reject them but rather accepted them. Watching her grow from a traumatized little girl to a lively teenager but tha also changed when he had to leave the country.

"I am sorry," Alex whispered, his voice carrying many emotions that he felt his body trembled. That was not something he wanted to remember. And he definitely didn’t want her to remember it either.
