Melting Her Cold Heart -
Chapter 48. Fueling the flames
Chapter 48: 48. Fueling the flames
Away from the mansion, Bernice was seated with a bowl filled with Springles and the oak carelessly lying beside her. One hand held her phone while the other held a chip, feeding it into her mouth. Her eyes zeroed in on her phone’s screen.
Reading through the comments and especially those that she knew came from people closely connected with the Crawfords or just Adam and his mistress. Her lips curled into a twisted smirk while her eyes glimmered with something mischievous.
"How sad they all are," he mused to herself before leaving the post she made ready to drop another. This time, without the filters or blurred images.
"Let’s see what you have to say about this one now," she smirked.
As expected, as soon as it dropped, it gained significant attention as those eager to watch the drama unfold quickly rushed in to have a look at it. Their comments and reactions brought satisfaction to Bernice in a way that she could not explain. Right now, she felt like all of her hard work was worth it.
Receiving the kind of attention she wanted, Bernice put away the phone, lying back down on the couch on her back and the bowl now placed on her stomach. Her pink sleeveless pajama top rolled up a little bit she could care less.
"You owe me a favor for this, Jess," she muttered, smiling brightly.
Adam was still driving when his phone nearly crashed with the number of incoming calls and notifications that had him balling his fist and a vein popping on his temple.
With the last bit of restraint, he drove to the side of the road and parked the car before he went through his phone and nearly crushed it under the weight of his grip. Veins bulked on the hand that held it but he held himself from crushing the poor, innocent phone.
"What are you waiting for, Alex? Did you say you would handle this? Or are you waiting to watch me get itt4rly destroyed first?" Adam said through clenched jaws. Timing the phone to the passenger seat, he punched the steering causing the horn to go blaring and startling the pedestrians who took a moment to look at the car before minding their business.
Adam ran his fingers roughly through his hair, once again doubting Alex. What if he was covering up from Sara? But those images he saw just now, Sara couldn’t have had them.
"Arhhh..." he hissed in irritation before slamming his foot on the accelerator and driving off like a man classed by a mob.
He needed a way to end all this madness and he couldn’t completely bank on Alex even though he was the best chance he’s got. But then, who could he go to?
Back at the mansion, Alex still held Sara in his arms as he tried to get her calm and back to sleep when his phone’s screen lit up and it began vibrating. Alex glanced at Sara’s still peaceful face with her eyes closed and exhaled lightly before reaching for it.
It was a good thing he had placed it on silent before now, he thought.
Seeing the name of the caller, he picked it up without a second hesitation but kept his voice down to ensure that she was not disturbed.
"What is it?" He asked. His free hand continued stroking Sara’s arm gently in a soothing motion.
"It’s about the post online again, Sir. What should we do? There is a new one and it’s worse than the first," Kai replied, being careful with his words knowing Alex was already in a foul mood.
Alex frowned. He had forgotten promising to take that down. "Handle it but don’t hurt the girls," he instructed and heard a hum od agreement from Kai. "Make it quick," he instructed before hanging up.
He frowned when the phone vibrated again and it was still from Kai.
"Anything else?" he asked impatience dripping in his tone.
"How is Ms Ambrose, Alex?" Kai’s voice was calm, the opposite of Alex’ irritated one.
"Doing better. Is that all?" He asked not wanting to be called again by the same person.
"I am just concerned as your friend, and hers. Don’t punish yourself for what happened, Alex. You got to her as fast as you could. Don’t blame yourself," Kais said and Alex sighed. "I’ll handle the office affairs today. Just focus on putting yourself back together."
Alex took a deep breath and closed his eyes. Kai was right but he couldn’t help it. Had he been there sooner... no, he would have still killed those bastards. "Alright, thanks," he said and Kai hummed.
This time, it was Kai who disconnected the call.
Kai stared at his phone as Alex’s name and phone number flashed before his eyes and then went to a blank screen signaling the end of the call. He massaged the space between his brows as he sympathized with his friend. He knew exactly what Alex was thinking but he hoped he wouldn’t.
Unlocking the phone again, he decided to address Adam’s messy life and fix the scandal as he was instructed.
It was impressive how much of a hero Afam Crawfird was but who was he to say anything about it?
The call went through and a woman’s skeptical voice came in.
"Hello...?" She said and Kai could imagine a deep furrow between her brows.
"This is secretary Skylar Wilson of Legend Corp. Miss Winters," he said and there was a pause before Jessa spoke.
"How can I be of assistance to you, Mr Wilson?" Jessa didn’t remember having any dealings with them or doing anything to have them calling her now.
"This is about the Crawford scandal online. We would appreciate it if you would take it down. Mr Legend isn’t very pleased with having his father’s name insulted like this just because of the mistakes of a grandchild," Kai replied and Jessa frowned.
How were the Legends and the Crawfords related?
"Excuse me but... what did you just say?" Jessa still couldn’t believe it.
"Have your partner take down the scandalous article. Or would you prefer I call her directly?" Kai asked without replying to last question. Her reaction was expected but he couldn’t entertain it.
