Melting Her Cold Heart
Chapter 47. Truth So Bitter

Chapter 47: 47. Truth So Bitter

As if the idea that Alex, the man none within the family and beyond for being celibate, had a woman in his house wasn’t shocking enough, Nicholas even addressed her as his granddaughter-in-law. Adam was completely at a loss for words and didn’t even know how to react. He so desperately wanted to see who that woman was, but he didn’t dare to ask.

From the conversation with the doctor and the little exchange between Nickolas and Alex, it was obvious that something tragic happened last night. No wonder he was away so late at night and even refused to see him after his return.

"Leave the Goldmans to me. You take care of the other problem," Nicholas said, and Alex raised a brow in askance. "I wasn’t born yesterday, kid," Nicholas said, and Alex chuckled and shook his head.

"I’ll handle Dane Scott," Alex replied. Though a bit reluctant, he trusted his grandfather’s abilities, and it’s not like he would let him do anything completely on his own.

"Good. I will leave tomorrow for Easton. The Scott boy is here, I expect you to get him out of here soon," Nicholas said as he made his way to the dining room.

Once Nicholas was gone, Alex turned his attention to Adam, and the air instantly became rigid.

Adam, who had so much to say before now lacked the proper words to say. He just stared at Alex, and the tension grew significantly with each passing second.

"You have been here since last night, Adam. Could you state your reason for visiting? You and I both know it’s not a casual visit," Alex said, wanting you to finish this and go back to Sara, who would be waking anytime soon. He didn’t want her waking up without him in the room.

"Yes, there is a reason why I came here, and you must have already known why, so I’ll go straight to the point," Adam said, casting aside all pride. At the end of the day, Alex was his uncle and also slightly older. There was no harm in asking him for a favor. "I need help with the scandal online, Uncle. Please."

Adam had to fight to maintain his composer and even prevent his fists from instinctively clenching. He didn’t remember the last time he had a proper conversation with Alex despite them being family and almost the same age. There was always something standing in the way. Alex, even when he was a child, had always been unreachable. The difference between them was so great that he couldn’t even imagine himself closing the gap. Williams Crawford’s decision to hand over the family businesses to Alex despite him already owning all of the legends was proof of that.

"If you are suspecting Ms Ambrose, then you are wrong. She is not responsible for it," Alex said, already guessing he would be asked to stop Sara from doing further damage.

Adam clenched his fists. Alex already knew who it was if he was so sure that it wasn’t Sara, so why didn’t he do anything? He looked at his watch and realized he had barely five hours remaining before the one day grave his grandfather had given him.

"Please, Uncle. Grandfather he..." she paused when he saw the subtle change in Alex’ expression and he realized that no matter how indifferent Alex was to everyone else in the Crawford’s, he will always be Williams’ Kayden. His youngest child and like every child, he also worried for his parents.

Should he use that to his advantage? Adam wondered but immediately dismissed the thought, knowing if he was found out, not only will Alex not let off easy, but it will completely sever his relationship with Williams.

"You may leave, I’ll have my secretary handle it," Alex said. No matter how much he would want to teach this nephew of his a lesson for hurting Sara, it shouldn’t be at the cost of his father’s health and reputation. He himself was also a Crawford, so he had put a stop to it sooner or later.

"Thank you," Adam said, relieved that he agreed to help. "I won’t disturb you anymore," he didn’t doubt Alex’s capabilities or his promise. Since he said so, he would take care of it. That truth tasted so bitter in his mouth but he swallowed it. There was nothing thay could be done to change that and he knew it too well.

"Have your breakfast before leaving," Alex said, halting Afam in his steps. He looked surprised because he didn’t expect to be offered breakfast. But Alex didn’t even wait for him to respond and started walking towards the dining room.

"Alright," he said and followed Alex.

"What took you so long?" Nicholas asked when he saw them and Alex shrugged while Adam didn’t even know what to say. "Your breakfast will get cold soon, eat up."

After dinner, Adam left while Alex and Nicholas head to the room where Sara laid. Her eyes wide open but staring blankly at the ceiling. She didn’t even notice them entering the room.

Nicholas remained standing by the door watching her closely while Alex proceeded inside and sat beside her on the bed. It was then that she stirred, flinching from his very presence.

"It’s me," he said in a calm and gentle tone. But she only stared at him without saying a word.

Seeing that, Nicholas withdrew and gently closed the door behind him so that they could have some privacy. His heart ached for his grandson having to go through this again but there was nothing that he could do to help him here. He did it before and can still do it now. Nicholas believed that with his whole heart.

"Do you still feel pain anywhere?" Alex asked but she still didn’t reply. Just when he thought she wouldn’t, she shook her head.

"I am sorry I didn’t go to you earlier than I did," he brushed the stray strands of hair from her face and tugged it behind her ear.

"...." Sara opened her mouth but couldn’t find her voice. Alex was quick to grab a glass of water for her and helped her to drink it.

"Feel better now?" He asked and she nodded her head and opened her mouth to talk again.

"Yes?" Though barely above a whisper, she could hear herself unlike before. She looked at the room that looked so familiar and then back at him. She didn’t know what to do or say to him.
