Alex shook his head. There was no way this could be alright. If anything happened to her in the process and then... He couldn’t even just think about it.
"No," he said, even shaking his head. "Not without the doctor’s approval. If they say it’s okay for me to tell you, then I will. Not before that."
Sara wanted to argue, but she understood her fears. She was fearful too, but she just couldn’t wait any longer. That’s why she was so bent on remembering the past. She wanted to know exactly how far they had gone into their relationship and why they separated. What happened that she couldn’t remember him?
"Okay," she said, accepting his decision because it was not without reason. Reasons she knew, too. "Will you accompany me to the next appointment? Dr. Anders wanted to speak with you."
"I will be there," Alex nodded. "You have my word."
"Okay,’Sara replied. She moved her hand from his grip. She saw the hurt that flashed his eyes, but she cupped his cheek, her thumb gently caressing it. "You still have business to attend to. I can’t keep holding you back," his expression softened, and she smiled. "Would you need your secretary?"
"The last I checked, she quit on me," Alex said as if reporting to her. "But it’s fine though, she doesn’t have to return as my secretary as long as she is willing to marry me," Sara saw Myrth dance in his eyes and the smile on his lips.
"someone seems to be in a rush. Why?" She asked. Her shoulders relaxed as the atmosphere became light once again.
"I have to rush it as much as possible. My woman doesn’t lack suitors, you know? I am right here, yet she is engaged to someone else. It is a cause for the rush," Alex replied. He realized he had just broken the news to her but didn’t regret saying it. It would have been either tonight or in the morning when he would reveal this to her. It just came a moment sooner than expected.
"You don’t mean that, right?" Sara’s smile faltered. He knew she was not engaged to anyone. So why would he say that? When he didn’t reply immediately, she frowned. "Alex, I am not engaged," she said, sounding as if trying to make him believe her. "Adam.and I broke up. You were there, and you know that..."
"Sweetheart..." Alex called, stopping her before she overreacted. "I know you and Adam broke up. I knew that before returning to Amberfell. I never planned to return here until I learned of your breakup," he revealed, and she blinked.
How quickly did the news of her annulled engagement travel? She shook her head as she focused back on the important matter at hand.
"Then what do you mean?" She asked, the furrow between her deepened.
Alex held her hand once again. He shifted in his position a little before speaking. "There is a marriagement agreement between the Goldmans and the Scotts from Easton. A daughter of familiar current patriarch will be married to the eldest son and future patriarch of the Scotts. And since Trevor has no other children, that makes you his finace," Alex nearly but his tongue when he said age was his Dane’s fiance. Nothing sounded more terrible in his ears or tasted so bitter in his tongue than saying Sara was engaged to another man, especially Dane.
Sara’s expression darkened. She hasn’t even met with that family yet, and this is already happening? "I am noy engaged," she said. The word engagement now sounds so terrible in her ears. First, it was her engagement with Adam that became a joke worth laughing at, and now this? An engagement with a man she was onky hearing about for the first time? "I will never marry someone. I have no idea who or what he is."
"You don’t have to. I won’t allow it," Alex said, and Sara gave a skeptical look. "You don’t think I would stand aside and let another man take you, do you?" he asked, but she just stared at him.
"I don’t know," she shrugged. "You didn’t seem to have a problem with that in the past," Alex’ hands held. She trembled, and he bowed his head.
"i am sorry for that," her words hut him hard. He k ew he shouldn’t have, but hearing her say it like that, as if he never cared, it was more hurtful than he ever thought. "I am not letting go again."
"How can I believe that? Word alone done really cut it. Actions speak volumes. So what are you going to do?" Sara asked. Sara genuinely wants to hear what he would do. She wanted that reassurance that he wouldn’t let her be forced into a relationship that she didn’t want to get into. Something told her it wouldn’t be easy to get out if she ever got in. Not that she would willingly agree to it, but she knew that families like Crawfied, Legends, Goldmans, and the likes and marriages for benefits were nearly inescapable.
"Marry me," Alex said. His expression all the seriousness in the world thay Sara couldn’t believe that he just proposed to her. "Become my wife, Sara," he said, and she blinked once again, still unable to form any words.
She wat he’d hom stand up, walked over to the bedside drawer on the side where he sleeps. Opened it as rummaged through looking for something. After a while, he returned to her with a dark blue brocade box in his hand. He stopped right in front of her and went on one knee.
"I said I would marry right now uf you’d let me. I meant it," Alex said as he opened the box. Inside it was the most beautiful ring that Sara had ever seen. Her eyes moved between Alex’s face and the box with the ring, heart bounding and hand trembling at her. Was this his reply to her challenge?
"I had this prepared before coming back to Amberfell just for you. I was willing to wait until everything as settled and you were ready for me. But I don’t mind putting this on you now, if you will permit me to," he took hold of her left hand while also taking the ring out of the box.
"Will you marry me?" He asked again.
