Melting Her Cold Heart -
Chapter 100: Their Shared Past
Chapter 100: Their Shared Past
Sara was silent for a moment before she opened her mouth to speak. Alex stared at her attentively as if what she was about to say was the most important thing in the world. For a brief moment, it rendered her unable to speak, but she managed to find her voice.
"The first thing. What I want to ask is—the accident. The car was perfectly fine this morning and even when I drove it it was fine. The brakes were fine, too. So I don’t know what happened - the accident was just so... I am not making any sense, am I?" She looked up at him again and still found his gaze still the same.
He even shook and held her hand, "I heard you loud and clear," he said, and she smiled bashfully. "You are right, though. The accident was just an incidental occurrence. Someone planned for it to happen. I don’t know who and how they did it, but I am still investigating it. They wanted to harm you, and that is unacceptable for me," his jaws worked as his eyes took a shade darker. "I promise I will get to the bottom of it, believe me."
"I believe you," Sara didn’t need him to say those last two words because she knew that he would. She d9dnt know how she knew that, but she could just feel it. "And I know you will," she said with all certainty and faith.
Alex smiled and placed his forehead on hers. "Just give me some time. A few hours or a day at most. I will have the answer to who wanted to hurt you."
Sara nodded. Their foreheads were still touching and wrapped her hand around him. "You said I could ask you anything, right?s Alex nodded and hummed. "There’s something that’s been bugging me lately. I believe you have the answers that I seek. Will answer me honestly as you have promised?"
Alex didn’t hesitate to nod even though he had a feeling it would be about their past. He remembered Dr Anders’ note telling him of her missing memories. Perhaps it was time he told her. Maybe she might just remember, and nothing will happen to her as he fears.
"Alex," she pushed herself off him and let go of him as well, but he still took hold of her hands as if he didn’t want to be separated from at all. As long as he could touch her. He would be fine. "Have we met before? Like before now – like sometime in the past?" she asked. Her heart raced as she anticipated his answer. What if he said ’no’? Then, all her hopes will be shattered. Then what if he says ’yes’? Why did she forget him?
"Why did you ask?"Alex asked. Was she just curious, or did she remember something? He wanted to be sure.
Sara, but her lip, trying to calm her racing heart. "The first time we met, you struck me as familiar. I didn’t think much about it then. But after meeting you again at the Crawfords, I felt the same way," she raised her head and looked at him. "As much as I hated to admit, your presence has always been... comforting, and that’s quite strange for someone I am only meeting for the first time. It is also the reason why..." she blushed and looked away again.
Alex was tempted to tease her upon her blushing of her own words and thk8ghts, but he maintained a serious expression and gently urged her to continue. "...Also the reason why...?"
"It is why I didn’t really hate your flirting with me. Or when you kissed me for the first time. dt was rather... Then there’s my father. You both seemed quite close for people who have only just met. With everything coming together... I feel I am missing something. I may be paranoid, but.. I can’t help it. I even told Dr. Anders about it," she grabbed his hands now and gently shook them. "Alex, please be honest with me. I want the truth."
Alex met her gaze. He could see the desperation and the silent pla in her eyes. He felt conflicted. He hasn’t received the clearance from the doctor to do this, but he already promised that he would be honest with her.
Seeing his silence and the conflicted expression on his face, Sara sighed, her shoulders sacked. "I am sorry. You don’t have to force yourself," so much for being honest. Maybe that was why he said he might lie sometime. She thought.
Just as she was about to let go of his hands, he held hers instead. "Don’t jump into conclusions," he said as she snapped her gaze back to him. The disappointment he saw in her eyes and heard from her tone stabbed him so hard he found it hard to breathe. "Yes, we shared a past together. But I don’t know if I should go into the details yet," his right hand cupped her cheek, and she instinctively earned into it. "You had amnesia, I don’t know what will happen if it’s triggered. I can’t take the risk," he caressed her cheek, his gaze apologetic. "I am sorry."
"I understand," she said, glad that he had tried to explain it to her. "I am sorry for forgetting," Sara knew she intentionally let go of some memories after the incident where she remembered how her mother passed away, but she didn’t know why she still couldn’t remember their shared past.
Sara could only imagine how hurt he must have been after learning that she no longer remembers him. She could already feel a painful prick in her heart just thinking, what if it had been her who was forgotten?
"I am sorry for leaving you back then. Maybe if I hadn’t left, this wouldn’t have happened," Alex said, feeling more guilt now that he was talking about it to her. "I am also to blame."
"I still want to know. I want to remember, Alex," her words caused a frown on his face and she quickly added hoping to ease his worry. "I Know I can handle it. Maybe not all but just a fraction of it. Please."
