MATED TO THE SECRET ALPHA -
Chapter 152: First Snow
Chapter 152: First Snow
First Snow.
Yesterday was chaotic. The news of Mirian’s injuries spread so far and wide in mere minutes that it got to the Luna’s ears. Angered, she ordered both Zeta Marcus and Zeta Detroit to look after her and make sure she was awake at most, three days, otherwise, they’d feel her wrath.
The unrest from yesterday still lingered in the air, and this morning, the first snow of the season began to fall, casting a serene silence over the pack’s territory.
Standing by her window and watching the beautiful white snowflakes cascade lazily, Reana was far from calm.
This...this snow came too early. There was still a month left until the winter season. Something was wrong, Reana could feel it, but not knowing exactly what it was, made her feel uneasy.
The delegation to the Southern Islands weren’t here yet. If they get caught up in the winter fury, it would be disastrous. She wouldn’t feel good losing a hundred pack members.
Although the goods brought over from the human village could feed them for half the winter season, and their Pack’s reserve could last them till spring, Reana felt they needed more resources. Especially with this sudden change of season.
So, that morning, Reana took a tour around the pack, inspecting what the pack members had done so far.
The place built for firewood was filled to the brim. The nicely chopped and unchopped wood was stacked high, a testament to the pack’s hard work.
The storage rooms for food were also well-stocked, with dried meats, fruits, and vegetables aplenty. The stacks of grains and flour were neatly arranged, their labels clearly visible. Reana’s eyes scanned the shelves, taking note of the quantities and varieties of food stored.
Even the ones brought from the human village were being stocked up, as omegas went to and fro with crates and baskets, busily stocking up the shelves and cupboards.
And the clothing area too was stocked up with winter wear and shoes, ranging from heavy warm blankets to warm socks and insulated boots of different sizes.
Reana’s eyes scanned the rows of neatly stacked shelves, taking in the variety of items on display. She noticed that there were even warm hats and gloves for the pack’s younger members, a thoughtful touch that should have brought a smile to her face, but she couldn’t afford to smile, not with the knowledge she possessed.
Instead, she was worried. Extremely worried.
"Luna, what’s the matter? You don’t look pleased. Is there anything that didn’t meet your expectations?" Beta Thane asked, standing beside her with his heart in his throat.
"Everything is perfect," she replied but that still didn’t ease her worries. "Send another letter to our people and see if we’d get a reply this time. I’m worried that they’ve encountered problems in the Southern Islands."
Beta Thane was stunned for a moment, then he nodded, "I’ll do that right away." With that, he hurried out of the store room.
"How is the fortress coming along?" Reana asked no one in particular, but her entourage knew someone had to answer.
A warrior replied, "It’s almost complete, Luna. The moat has been constructed around the territories, the gates are up, and the walls are being reinforced as we speak. We’ll have a safe place no matter how large the rogue armies are, or how strong the monsters are."
Reana didn’t respond immediately. Desperation could make people do the most bizarre things. In a matter of life and death, the fortress walls may not be fully able to hold back rogues who are desperate for survival, reason she ordered the gates to be reinforced with three separate gates, each one better than the last.
But the attacks wouldn’t be as much of a worry as it would have been without a fortress.
By the afternoons, Reana was done inspecting the storage. But just as they thought of doing other things, a message came to her.
"Luna, Alpha Killian of the West Wood Pack is here to see you." The guard reported.
My brows arched, so soon? She thought he would wait until more than half of his pack members had been torn apart by the Nightwings before he swallowed his pride and begged for help.
What a fool.
Reana made him wait until she had her lunch before seeing him.
...
"What do you mean, Luna Reana?"
Alpha Killian’s face couldn’t be said to be good at this point. He knew coming to the Black Moon Pack was a bad idea, but his beta forced him to come.
And now, not only did Luna Reana keep him waiting for two hours, she was making demands before he even got to state his business. He seethed with annoyance, but he kept his composure, knowing that showing weakness or anger wouldn’t help his cause.
"I heard your territory has a crystal mine. I want ownership of that mine," Reana was direct as she pinned the Alpha with her eyes.
"What is a crystal mine?" Alpha Killian had no idea what that was. He’d never heard such a term before, and Reana didn’t blame him, considering she also didn’t know of such a thing until Orion told her about it.
"This only proves that you have no use for it. I’ll take it then," Reana said.
"Hold on, I’ve not agreed to that." Alpha Killian objected. "First, tell me what that is. And secondly, why do you need it?" He didn’t know what it was, but Luna Reana wanted it, so it could only mean one thing: Whatever it was, was an important asset. And he had no intention of giving it away to Reana.
Reana watched him intensely for a while, then spoke, "Aren’t you here to seek help to fight against the Nightwings? I’m trading my pack’s service for that mine. If you don’t want that, please, leave."
Alpha Killian’s face darkened, his eyes flashing with anger. He knew he needed the Black Moon Pack’s help, but he wasn’t about to give away something he didn’t even know the value of. He gritted his teeth, weighing his options. "I’ll take your offer," he said finally, his voice tight with reluctance.
"But if I find out you’re trying to deceive me, there will be consequences."
Reana arched her brow, "War, perhaps?" she snorted. He should first survive the winter.
