Chapter 116: Vivian’s Downfall
But as they grew older, Kael started going out more. They heard he had friends outside the pack, and that he’d even joined some sort of... Hunters organization. The rumors were vague, but one thing was certain: Kael became even more territorial, selfish, and heartless.
Reana’s eyes refocused on Vivian, her gaze piercing. "And what, exactly, do you think belongs to Kael, Vivian?"
Vivian didn’t answer that, "Among everyone, I liked you the most, Reana..."
"You mean, among your family?"
Vivian’s eyes clouded over, a faint hint of sadness flickering across her face. "Yes... among my family," she repeated, her voice barely above a whisper. The words hung in the air, heavy with longing or something more.
Reana’s gaze never wavered, her eyes boring into Vivian’s as if searching for something hidden beneath the surface. "And it was mutual," she replied, her voice low and almost careless.
Vivian’s eyes flashed with surprise, a faint blush rising to her cheeks. For a moment, she seemed to forget herself, her mask slipping to reveal a glimmer of genuine emotion. Then, just as quickly, the mask was back in place, and Vivian’s expression was once again serene. "Is that so?"
"Until you tried to turn my brothers against each other, against me." Reana replied casually, as if discussing the weather, but her eyes gleamed with a cold, calculated light.
Vivian’s smile bitterly, "Ah, yes... that," she said, her voice laced with artificial sweetness. "I suppose that was... unwise of me."
"You were never wise, even now," Reana said, her voice dripping with disdain. Her gaze shifted to the wine, and she reached for the porcelain bottle, but her hand couldn’t quite grasp it, her fingers trembling ever so slightly.
Vivian’s eyes flicked to Reana’s hand, a small, triumphant smile playing on her lips.
However, it was wiped off when Reana turned her head, locking eyes with her. Her lips rose in a sneer as she continued, "Your lack of wisdom has always been your downfall, Vivian."
With that, she closed her hand around the wine bottle and poured some for herself, "Want more?" He raised the bottle, gesturing to Vivian, "It will be a waste to not finish it."
Vivian’s eyes flashed with anger at Reana’s sneer, but she quickly regained her composure, a sugary sweet smile spreading across her face. "Sorry, I’m full," she cooed, her voice dripping with false sincerity.
She was starting to feel the effect of the poison and her smile faltered for a moment, a slight frown etched on her face as she suppressed the subtle pain gnawing her organs.
Reana’s eyes narrowed, her gaze intensifying as she watched Vivian’s composure slip. "Full?" she repeated, her voice laced with skepticism. "How... unfortunate."
Vivian’s eyes began to glaze over, her pupils dilating as the poison took hold. She swayed slightly in her seat, her smile twisting into a grotesque grimace.
The omega saw this, but she thought Vivian was drunk, so she stood there and lowered head down.
Reana’s expression remained impassive, her eyes gleaming coldly as she filled her goblet and continued drinking, "You know, Vivian," she began, "We would have made a perfect family. With me being the Luna, and you, my beautiful sister, by my side." Her voice was laced with a venomous sweetness, each word dripping with malice as she leisurely drank from the wine.
Vivian’s eyes fluttered, her body swaying precariously as the poison coursed through her veins. Reana’s gaze never wavered, her eyes fixed on Vivian with an unnerving intensity. "But you had to listen to your greedy mother and ruin it, didn’t you, Vivian?"
She continued, "Why did you think I’m still sitting here up to this day - enjoying being the Luna?" she drank another sip, "Did you think it was because your mother and Kael let me be?"
She shook her head, "Do you know how many times I’ve narrowly escaped an assassination attempts?" she took a deep breath, "Do you think I ate clean food and drank clean wine?" she chuckled, unamused. "Six out of ten times, my food and drinks were poisoned," she revealed, her voice devoid of emotions. "But I’m still here, Vivian. And it’s because, I’m immune to poison."
The omega’s head snapped up, her eyes widening in horror.
As for Vivian, her blurry vision cleared at once, replaced by a mixture of shock, fear, and desperation. She tried to speak, but her voice was barely a whisper, her words slurred by the poison’s effects.
She’s been suppressing the urge to cry out because of the pain she was feeling. She thought that Reana’s poison was delayed because of her Luna wolf, but now, knowing that Reana was immune to poison, Vivian’s composure shattered.
She let out a strangled cry, her body convulsing in agony as the poison ravaged her system.
Reana watched her with an unyielding gaze, her expression a mask of cold indifference. "You should have stayed out the fight between your mother and I, Vivian," she said, her voice dripping with malice. "I held nothing against you but you sought your own death. Farewell, and keep a spot for Katherine and your brothers."
With that, Reana stood up and walked away, leaving chaos behind.
The omega had stood there, not daring to run to mistress’s aid, but now that the Luna was leaving, she rushed over to Vivian’s side.
"Miss, Miss, where is the antidote!" she panicked, her voice frantic with worry and fear.
Vivian coughed out a clot of blood, her body falling over the chair. There was no antidote. She’d thought to die with Reana, but she’d failed.
Vivian wailed, but her voice was drowned out by the omega’s screams for help.
Vivian’s vision began to blur until she couldn’t see anything but white, her mind clouding with the realization that she was going to die, alone.
She’d failed to clear the path for her brother, failed to seek revenge for Ryan, failed to her mother and failed herself.
A lone tear rolled down her cheeks as her eyes lost their shine, and her hand fell limply to the side.
She had given up the ghost.
Reana shut her eyes as she walked along the corridor. She could hear the desperate screams and cries from behind. She should be pleased that Vivian was dead, happy that Katherine would be in a state of shock for a long time as a result of this, but she wasn’t happy. Not because of Vivian, but because of Ryder.
He should have been here to drink a few cups with her. To celebrate an enemy’s downfall.
